Mk1 octavia starting noise

Featured Replies

9 times out of 10 after I start the car it sounds like the starter keeps spinning for a second. Anyone know why this would be?

1.6 combi estate mk1 octavia.

Might be your starter on the way out.

Awh that's alright. To me it seems like the starter relay isn't doing its job right as had a problem with a pajero and bypassed the relay and then if I kept the key turned the motor would keep going. The whole idea I the relay is to stop power going to the starter motor once the engine is started isn't it?

So maybe a faulty relay rather than motor? Could be completely off as not a mechanic or anything do not sure exactly how all this stuff works.

I had the same problem on mine, but it went for months after then went.

VERY common prob on the 20v engine.

You can take the starter off and clean it and regrease it and it will stop it doing it for 6 months or so.

yep I concour mine does it and the dealership has told me to take it off and clean the pinion shaft and oil/grease it!

my golf 1.8 T had the same and now the octy is. just removed it and regreased it every 6 months.

My vrs has done the same since I bought it a year ago, I was told by a good mechanic its nothing to worry about, its quite a common thing in vag range

I found that undoing the starter bolts a little then starting allows the starter to move a slight bit on the bolts away from the flywheel. Then nip them back up. The problem is the ring gear keeps hold of the starter bendex and the starter clutch screams. Left like this it will wear the starter clutch out.

Mine does the same, i have a friend in audi and they all do it, just like the other posts need to take if off and clean it out.

I have cleaned and greased mine only to find it still does stick a little bit when replaced. I just loosened the bolts a little and started it then nipped to bolts back up to locate the starter in the correct postiton.

Mine started doing it 2 years ago, stripped it down, cleaned / regreased, ok for about 6 months then off we go again :wall: .

One thing I did notice when the outside air temp goes below 10C it does it, above that or engine hot it sounds ok.

Same here. I just ended up ignoring it on mine as I couldn't be bothered to keep taking it apart every 6 months to clean it and I didn't want to pay over £100 for a new one.

Interesting that it is a problem on the 1.6's as well, I'd only ever heard of it on 1.8Ts.

The only true complete fix is replacement starer motor. This little fix it are ok for a while but the starter has effectively worn and the heat of the engine causes binding and as stated gets lazy and this noise is the starter not disengaging from the flywheel ring gear and thus you get a overrun. I have just replaced mine having put up with it for 4 years of slowly getting worse. So if you have only just got the noise, chances are a regrease could cure it for a while, but it will come back.

Mine being doing this for ages, It does make the car sound like a nail !!!

Embrassing sometimes tbh

same here....I changed the bendex with new Bosch one and the noise come back after 2 months

As I mentioned before in this thread, try just loosingin the bolts a bit and starting a couple of times then nip them back up the starter will move to the best position. Then nip them back up. 5 minute job with an 18mm spanner.

I had mine replaced, the noise was embarrassing, getting everyone turn to look at you after filling up lol
