In camera HDR feature

Featured Replies

I was on my way to St Albans this morning and parked up to take some photos of the yellow rape fields but also tried out the HDR feature on my camera for a photo of my car. I see that quite a few cameras have this now and it works quite well to balance the contrast. However nothing must move as ghost images happen otherwise! Does anyone else here use the HDR feature? How do you find it?

I've not got the HDR feature on my camera so it's slightly more convoluted to get them but talk about deja vu with the oil seed rape fields!

No, mine doesn't do it, but I used to do them myself in the past. These are the only ones I have hosted at the moment. Not done any for a long time.

how does it work with the in camera thing? Does it take several shots? And can you alter it yourself or do you just get what you're given?

If you do not have the HDR feature on your camera there is an HDR effect in the latest version of Picasa 3 (its free)

A True HDR picture is made up of 3 photos taken in succession using different exposures, and done this way pictures can look stunning as it can bring out details that would otherwise be missing.

Whilst Software does a reasonable job with a single picture, it cannot insert detail that simply is not there in the original picture. For example in photos with Sky, the clouds maybe over exposed and lacking detail.

The iPhone when in HDR mode takes 2 pictures, as you can clearly see that if things have moved you get some weird effects. An example would be a person walking, they sometimes end up with body parts missing that are moving (eg. arms / legs).

I normally use 9 exposures to get true hdr, at a pinch you cannuse 5 but any less and it's not very effective

Heres a couple I took. No HDR on my camera so I use photomatrix, you can get a free demo download but it watermarks all your prints until you pay for the full version.

Loz, the camera (Nikon D800) takes two photos and you can adjust the level of exposure differential and smoothing in camera. Due to the dynamic range of the sensor it takes 2 exposures and the HDR effect is done quite well - although not as strikingly as ones done with a HDR software.

The pics look good - ant thanks for sharing.
