Replacing VRS fogs with spots?

Featured Replies

Apologies is this has been covered before. I've done a search but can't find the answer. I spend a lot of time driving in the dark and a lot on B roads. The Fogs are useful maybe twice a year so i'm wondering if you can replace them with a driving light for use on main beam. I don't want a pair of dirty great Cibie rally slags, just something that will replace the fogs and retain the std look of the car.

Thanks in advance :)

Has no one done this?

My friend has replaced the bulb wiv like a hid kinda blue tinted bulb bright a hell if they would be better for ya

could you replace the bulbs with HIDs with ballasts?

Consider it easier to fit hid kit into the existing high beams?

Would there be any MOT implications if fogs were changed to spots?

Have often thought about this myself.

The reflector / beam pattern would be all wrong, you would just have a brighter fog light.

Fog lights are not tested on the front, only the rear. Spot light regs state that it must be switched off when on dipped beam, only illuminated on main beam IIRC

Technically I think the mounting height of the fog lights is too low for them to be main beam lights. However I'll admit I find front fog lights useless.

EDIT - no height requirement though at http://www.legislati...schedule/5/made

To be honest I think it would be better to fit a 55watt HID kit to replace the High Beam bulbs.

You'll get massively bright lights from doing this, perfect for 'driving lights'. Ie brilliant at lighting up empty unlit country b-roads.

Any idea of light scatter doesn't matter - high beams chuck light everywhere anyway.

You won't be dazzling any on coming drivers anyway, because you should never use high beam when there's other cars anyway, regardless of what lights you have!

Come to think about it, one day I might retro fit some HIDs to my R32's main beams. Fast road night time driving is just naff even with upgraded bulbs.

This surely is easier to do that retro fitting some sort of driving lamp. I'd think that driving lamps would be too low down by the fog light area to be effective. That is assuming you can even source a decent retro fit lamp that fits, and doesn't look too out of place.

Going back to when I was in old blighty, used to love the driving lamps in the front valance on The mk 1 Granada although I think the only real benefit was being able to (trying to) mimic Jack and George ........... actually drove the sweeney Consul a couple of times, but that's a story for another day!

I was also sure that to fit spots that low on a car now was illegal since late 70's and that's what started the trend in some higher end models having factory fitted spots into cut outs in the grill?

I mostly use my fogs to highlight the trenches that join the odd dollop of tarmac on the local sheep tracks laughingly described as roads by the NRA. There handy for that, but you can barely travel above walking pace.

So i could just have HID on high beam? How does this stand up against an mot? I frequent Scoobynet and there has been a lot of talk about the legality of after market HID.

With regards to the spots being so low - i don't think it would be a problem when you look at the position (and size) of the ones i had on my Elise. Turning those on was like turning night into day :)
