Featured Replies

Im planning on buying a Columbus HU for my octavia, but since I'm in India I won't get navigation :(

Is it possible to load India specific maps onto the Columbus ?

Everywhere I've looked online it only talks about EU maps ... Any one have any idea at all about this ??

I might be in the wrong forum for this !!

Are there any manufactures that make sat nav's for India? as you would need to find if any maps have been produced.

Is Columbus/Amundsen not an option in India?

Mdk1 makes a good point in that are there any maps produced for Indian roads?

No the columbus is not even an option in India ...

Forget the Columbus .. We dont get an options list whatsoever ... Skoda says this is what u get buy it or f*** off.! Lol

There is a company which provides full gps for india .. It's called mapmyindia ... But how would that help me ?

I have a friend who is in India. He told me there are maps, but most of the devices he could find were windows CE based. He did find a double DIN solution and that was Windows based. It cost him 25000 INR.

Ya it's a system called caska supports maps, rear view camera, Bluetooth etc

But it looks horrid the quality is Beyond pathetic ...It's Chinese made .. Need I say more ? Hehe

Tele Atlas are currently mapping India, so there may be TomTom maps in the future.

This is how for they have got...

- 2D City Maps covering more than 350 square kilometers across eight key Indian cities - Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune;

- 82 3D Landmarks of notable structures in major Indian cities such as Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Dakshineshwar Kali Temple and India Gate;

- Lane and signpost information for major roads in Delhi and Mumbai;

- Coverage of key metropolitan areas, as well as popular weekend holiday destinations such as Alibaug, Kullu-Manali and Mussoorie; and

- More than 1.5 million POIs, across 53 categories including residential buildings and apartments, shops, places of worship, schools, hotels, banks, petrol stations, and other popular destinations and including more than 560,000 villages points.

Probably not, but there are a number of good quality aftermarket units that use the same Tele Atlas map format as TomTom.

If i can source aN Indian maps DVD from one of these map providers ...

Can it be uploaded to the Columbus then ?

Edited by pz1811

You wouldn't be able to do a direct update. The mapping would have to be in the right format, which would effectively mean it would need to be prepared by Skoda once they have the base data from the mapping providers.

I see that TomTom offer India mapping for their devices though:

What has your local dealer said about this? Is there not any form of optional navigation system available to Indian Skodas?

No afraid not, the Columbus map data format is not published and you would need to convert the data somehow. The BMW professional navigation system uses similar format maps that can be converted with a bit of tinkering (assuming india is available). The map provider for the Columbus across europe is Navteq.

No - I don't think so, but you will be able to load them to an aftermarket unit. My friend checked with Blaupunkt when he was looking. He was told that the maps would be available first on aftermarket units and MAY be available on the Amundson at some time in the future.

As well as the maps you will need a NavCore that will work with the hardware.

This is what I already have

http://www.mapmyindia.com/navigator/vx140s-premium

I wanted an in dash system and really liked the Columbus as it would support my Bluetooth module, MFSW etc

But it seems difficult now ..!:(

No @wardy we don't have any gps option from Skoda at all right now !

I also tried contacting someone from VW ... But the RNS-510 which we have on the passat also doesn't have the map support ... !

There are many double din aftermarket items available here like caska and also universal offerings from mapmyindia ... But even all these aftermarket units are not upto the mark .. After using a bolero system these HU s only feel cheap and crap to use .!

Will keep my re search on though !

Is the Kenwood unit not an option?

  • Author

I haven't seen any kenwood units that support navigation ... But will have a look ! Are they good ? Any specific model I should look at ??

I think the model is DBT 9850T

I asked around ... But couldn't find anything ... Will again ask this specific model.!

Quick question -

Is the Columbus worth the price without navigation ?

in my opinion no - it is a great system but I would not pay the extra for one if I couldn't use the naigation - would go with a Bolero

  • Author

I've been looking for one for quite sometime now (bolero) but nothings working out !!

Columbus are dime a dozen (well not exactly)

On ebay

Kenwoods not bad ... & available

But then it says it's got Bluetooth !! But I've already got a Bluetooth module in my car ! Will that work .?

And will the audio and navigation be supported on the maxidot ??

Bolero are out there but as they are not that common they are not that cheap. If you can get a Columbus cheap then maybe it would be worth while getting one and not having the navigation and just use it as a stereo system ?
