Skoda Fabia (2001) 1.9 SDI Rear Brake Shoe Removal

Featured Replies

When replacing the brake shoes on the Fabia 1.9 SDI do you have to take the Hub off? Anyone know any guide guides or tips?

This link is from a 1.4 but I dare say its near enough the same if not identical to what you are looking for.

Yes PD75 is right. We've a 1.4TDI and a SDI and the brakes are identical.Great guide Techie. Maybe worth slackening the handbrake as well as de-adjusting if bits are seized inside the drum.

that guide really doesn't help you when it comes to getting the shoes off...

No you don't have to take the hub off.

While I'm all for DIY and helping people if you can't figure out how brake shoes come off you shouldn't be doing them.

Oi, no need for that, the spring was stuck, just needed a tap

I think that Tech1e was just dealing with the facts that he was given, taking shoes apart is always a bit of a messy business if you are not doing it every day, take lots of pictures - getting the springs back on is normally harder than taking them off.

Oh and for the record - I meant is the best order in which to remove the springs, after searching the forum, people ask this question and just get pointed towards a guide that tells you how to clean them! Hence my comment

Plenty of photos of how to and assembled brakes /how to release adjuster in Haynes. I found assembly easy compared to the many other drum braked cars I've owned/worked on over the years. My only tip, is to hold the top spring on tghe rod with something like a bit of tape with shoes in released position, before slotting in the adjusters.

Q for Tech1e- Do the pistons creep out if not clamped ?I had a semi sticky handbrake a few years ago. Stripped the NS down to find the rivet joint sticking, with plenty of shoe left( car had been sitting for a few months), but once shoes back on ,and on min adjustment, shoes were too far out to get drum back on, and pistons had to be forced in, using lever on shoes and releasing excess fluid using bleed valve.
