Ethernet cables, routers, and getting "the internet" on the tele

Featured Replies

I have the 40inch version of this TV.

You can run a connection test under settings and network connections.

If that works it should auto update the firmware and then under the video options on the XMB menu you will see all the options populate like iplayer, youtube etc.

I'll defer to John's knowledge of the specific TV then :whew:

But I haven't (yet) got it hooked up to the internet, so can only comment on its suitability as a viewing/listening device ;)

OK, we'll both defer to jrw then :giggle:

OK, there's a network option which gave me You Tube, iPlayer, Daily Motion etc but not 4OD, 36 "content sites" in total and after some playing around with the remote (which could become tiresome over time) I succeeded in viewing some of them. The other option is the browser which again just gives me the Sony shop page, when I tried going to the support or technical pages all I got was a message " insufficient memory / this page is to large to download.

So, having a bit of a brainwave, there's a parallel port on the TV for a PC, so is it an idea to get my old desktop out of the loft and run the ethernet cable to this then from the PC to the TV, essentially using the tele as a large monitor ??

Yes. Also you can then run something like MediaPortal (it's free) to watch downloaded (legally of course) movies, view pictures, play music etc. You'll probably need an audio cable too (depending on what's available on the TV). MS remote for about 20 quid off ePray and Robert's your mother's brother. If you've got a decent hifi system you can run the PC through that instead of the TV ;) (Big noise)

Oh and you could also view Briskoda in magnificent 32" too! :D :D

I have a Panasonic Smart TV with the internet connection and wireless ability. I have connected mine to my VirginMedia SuperHub by wired connection and it runs all the "internet" stuff movies bbc iplayer etc with no problems at all. You will probably frind though that your "smart" TV is not as smart as the salesmen imply and you will only have access to limited resources and cannot for example Browse the internet as you can with your laptop phone or ipad etc.
