heater blowing just cold

Featured Replies

turn my heater on this morning and it

only blows cold air tried turning on /off

up/down but no change .

i'am thinking it could be thermostat stuck open.

engine temp seems normal.

anyone had simalar problem.

glad its not winter.lol

Do you mean engine thermostat? If it was that even when the engine was up to temp I would expect it to allow some hot air through to the interior.

If you mean internal thermostat of the heater matrix it would have to be closed so that i stopped all fluid movment so that the matrix did not warm up.

Stil not very helpful to you though as you will need some advice on the matrix which I don't have, sorry.

Best of luck.

Check coolant level, then bleed air from heater matrix at the hose stub connection at the bulkhead (one has a bleed hole covered by the hose). Bleeding is easier if you detatch and raise the coolant header tank with all hoses attached.

If heater hoses are getting hot then you have a flap problem - dashboard out. With the engine at a fast idle, one heater hose should be hotter than the other.

If there is no circulation, the water pump impeller may be loose on its shaft (VAG old favourite). If you take out the thermostat you can feel the impeller with your fingers - if it moves or is broken, you have a problem...

Fit a new engine thermostat - but only OE thermostats fit the housing properly. Don't waste your time with pattern spares here.

Use only G12++ coolant and deionised water.

rotodiesel.

Use only G12++ coolant and deionised water.

I'm intrigued - why de-ionised water - what does that do here? (or rather not do, I guess)

mate as had a look at it for me.

removed scuttle pan and confirmed

heat getting to matrix.

then removed glovebox ,furtled behind

the heater for a bit with the result of my car now

being nice and warm,

i think he released the flap which was stuck.

i dare not put it on cold again till the weather gets

warmer incase it sticks again.

you should be careful what you wish for.

my car is now stuck in the turkish bath zone.lol

had to open my windows to get it to cool down a bit.

might try to get temp to midway point.

i think that the flap is well and truly f**ked as the heater

switch as no effect.so far my heater as been fixed on virtual aircon

now on about 28 degs.

i know this is gonna be a expensive job just i can get a mid

point temp for the time being.

alfredjohn, if its fully automatic A/C you have, try demanding HIGH and LOW lots of times, that might clean up the flapmotor postional feedback tracks a bit. My late 2000 Passat has that problem, last year we had to break our journey to cool the interior off a bit! I've had a new motor for a few years, but I usually end up managing to force the temperature to be roughly okay in summer and in winter, inbetween its too hot or too cold though at times.

sidewaze samm, the reason for suggesting the use of deionised water is, that most areas of UK tend to have hard water and that is not too good for the cooling system internals - me, I live in Jockland, and the water is quite a bit different due to the different geology.

OK - I can understand that.

Me...I'm in the soft water zone of the north west

cheers
