Anyone recommend me a Cycle Rack for a MK1 VRS?

Featured Replies

As the title says can anyone recommend me a cycle rack for either the roof or the back of the car?

preferably one you've used..

Does anyone know about use of them on the rear of the car, the generic halfords ones say don't use with a spoiler, so does that rule them out for a VRS?

What type of bikes are you planning on carrying -there can be problems with some oversized frame tubes with certain systems and you should never clamp a carbon frame.

Towbar mounted is the most convenient - a lot of them fold down with the bikes on so that you can get in to the boot, but if you don't have a towbar -fitting one could make it very expensive.

I have basic Thule ones for the roof that we used to use on a Nissan Micra -It's not easy to lift a heavy mountain bike on to the roof of a car and I was always frightened that I would slip and damage the roof of the car -I never did though. They are very secure and have a great key locking system which you can order all the locks to match so that the roof rack locks to the car and the bike holders lock to the bikes using one key. Thule stuff is really good quality and is modular so that you can mix and match different bits or move a roofrack from one car to another by buying some new feet.

I have a halfords boot mounted one. Nice and easy to get on and off and takes 3 bikes. Just cant open the boot so have to go through the back seats to get stuff. I got it cheap of a bloke in work it is realy good but i think i would of saved for roof racks and all if this wasnt available. But if you can find one cheap on ebay etc i would recomend it for the price.

This is it fitted (if it shows, im on the phone)

Not the best looking but does the job. Have adjusted some of the angles since to sit the bikes better.

Roof bars and carriers for the win!!!

roof bars and Thule proride 591 racks are my weapons of choice, suitable for carbon frames too (well i've had carbon bikes in mine no problem) as it's a ratcheted clamp so you can adjust accordingly (never clamping carbon bikes is only meaning clamping with a large force).

rear mounted carriers aren't suitable for some frames as they physically won't go on depending on the fram design, this is usually applicable to full sussers

its hardtail mountain bike but i may have a full sus soon..

roof bars looks less hassle is that the case ?

how much would i be looking at for bars and carriers?

I bought my set up from http://www.skidrive.co.uk a few years ago now -don't know how well the prices compare but it should give you a good idea
