Which diesel engine to go for?

Featured Replies

Before too long, we are going to look to replace one of our cars (most likely the Octavia) and possibly with a Yeti. It will likely be a diesel 4x4 version, but the question is which engine to go for.

Looking at the brochure, the 2.0TDI 110hp is slightly more consumptive than the 140hp and 170hp versions. This I get, as the weakest engines are not 'on top of the job'. But are the 140hp or 170hp versions worth the extra in drivability etc against the slightly more consumptive 110hp?

The usual cost-benefit analysis I suppose.

I'm not sure about you Bahnstormer, but the power delivery on my Shark modded CR140 pulls quite strongly all the way to the red line, so much so that I have been asked if it was a petrol

If you want a manual........I agree

CR170 ... brrrrrrrmmmmmm.

Depends on your needs really.

I owned a 140 Yeti before my current 110 4x4 and in day to day driving I have felt there is little to choose between them. Fuel consumption wise again on average they have worked out about the same, if anything I would say the 110 has it by a nose. Admittedly my 140 was an early production model with the older Tiguan first generation CR engine, which is ever-so slightly more polluting and fuel thirsty.

If your towing regularly then the 140 for sure but if not and value for money is a consideration, an £800 premium for higher tune software seems a swizz; the 140 and 110 engines are physically identical.

I have a 110 2wd version with a racechip(tech?) box fitted uping the 110 to 140 cost about £130 for the box but gives a smoother drive(imho) and is also more economical fuel wise

Others on the site are not too supportive of these boxes however mine works for me!

CR170, of course - as economical as the others, and superior performance - and you get larger brakes and probably a few other HD components thrown in.

Superb performance at speed - should you ever get across the creek and onto the Autobahn.

I bought a 170 and I have to say I'm really, really impressed.

It's a very versatile car anyway, but with the 170 you have a pretty quick car, can pull a 2000kg trailer and do a bit of offroading.

All in a family car. Excellent! :D

Bigger brakes are a bonus too.

Did a track day in mine and it really is quicker than most people would imagine.

That's what I said!!!!

You forgot the bit about overtaking VRS's. :giggle:

170 for me. I would say this as that's what I've got.. however its pretty good, pulls well, economical and I would say quite smooth. It ticked most of the boxes for me although the 140 is also highly regarded on here by those that are living with it day to day.

I have the 140 HP model,so I dont know about the others.

I am very pleased with its performance, has loads of power and always more to spare.A real pleasure to drive.

As for MPG I am not sure as here in Israel we use the KM/Lit .My average is 15 KM per Liter, never less than 14 km per liter , which I find very good.(about 35.3 miles per gallon , if I am not mistaken.)

I have the 110 2WD. Originally we drove a 170 and it was fab :) And I was pretty sure I didn't want a 110 especially as I do a lot of motorway work (and it's only 5 speed). But having test driven one, it seemed pretty good actually. It certainly seems quick enough in real world situations like overtaking or accelerating in 4th/5th from low revs.

Having said that I'm still having mine breathed on by Revo next week to take it to about 140. £300 for about 30 horses and a bit more ooomph seems a good deal.

I tend to cruise on the motorway at about 75 where the 110 is revving around 2,500 RPM returning 50ish MPG. It'd be nice to have a sixth but hey ho, my next Yeti will be a DSG :)

My 110 ish works very well ...regular 47 + mpg and even up to 62mpg every so often....mine had an excursion to Shark performance and is now running at 175bhp so overtaking/motorway or any other driving is effortless :-)

Coming from an Octavia vRS 170, then the Yeti 170 was the only one for me ... test drove a 140 and it felt a bit flat, though was better than the 1.8TSi I also had a go in.

My 170 is averaging 50.7mpg according to maxidot (so probably somewhat less but still on par with the Octys), will tow 1400Kg all day long and is fun to drive. Can't ask for more than that in my book!

As per the book figures, it seems that looking here and on poster's Fuelly figures et al. suggests that the mpg figures are pretty similar choose which version you get.

I'm tempted by the 140hp version to balance performance vs. other costs (the extra £££ to get to 170hp and extra Insurance therefore) though the larger brake discs are not without merit on the 170hp.

SWMBO will be driving it as much as me, and she has a horse at the top of a steep hill around here. The stright road going up it is OK for her 110hp Octavia, so long as you have a good run-up 4th is OK. I wouldn't want it to be any more of an effort, so I guess that would rule out the 110hp version here on performance grounds.

Might be the same bhp but that's where the similarity ends; taken mine into the Alps with four adults plus luggage, can't say I noticed she ran out of breath.

When I tested a 110 we had a Jaguar XJ6 and a Senator 3.0 24V both will do 140mph and were very pleased (indeed surprised) with the performance of the Yeti so bought the S 110. I could not see any reason to spend money on more HP.

If you want to tow a heavy trailor and do a lot of motorway driving then you may need the higher HP engines.

I bought the 140 as a power/cost compromise, but also with the idea that I might have to tow a horse trailer (rarely, but possibly). It could house up to two large competition horses, so a good 700-800 kg of horse on top of around 1,000 kg of trailer. Not done it yet (still have to get the towbar for a start!) but I am confident it will manage easily.

I tested a 170 and found it was genuinely fast, but I was always set on the 140 and was happy that the 140 is surprisingly poky, even compared to the car it replaced (a Volvo V50 2.0D) and the other household car (Merc B200 CDi), which are both around the same power.

The old 1.9PD 110 engine - which is what I assume is in the Mk.1 Octavia - has significantly less torque (235Nm) than the 2.0CR 110 in the Yeti (280Nm) or even the 1.6CR Greenline (250Nm). I think this would have more relevance than the power output for towing horseboxes, overtaking, etc. Of course, the 140CR has 320Nm! I think the latter would be my choice.

... test drove a 140 and it felt a bit flat, though was better than the 1.8TSi I also had a go in.

Hmmm.. interesting! And good to know :whew: - chosed 140 4x4 but the dealer in Tallinn only had 1,8 TDI for test drive. Could only drive it about 30 min. It was quick and surprisingly quiet, but I'm still not sure what to expect from 140 TDI compared to the TSi. (Not worried that much about speed or power, but noise...)

My choice was easy.

DSG only available with CR140.

Job done.

I'm biting my tongue.... But a standard 1.8tsi yeti is within four car lengths of a 170tdi at around half a mile...

Personally id be more than happy with a 110 or a 140 - performance is so similar due to the torque figures that it's almost irrelevant. The 170 however is a fair bit quicker and I rate the larger brakes which are nice to have also. :-)

170 goes like a scalded cat, stops like nothing I have driven in 25 plus years, and getting 45 plus MPG! You wont regret it!

Coming from a PD170 Octavia vRS I dearly wanted the CR170 Yeti but needed the DSG gearbox. I too felt he CR140 felt a bit flat by comparison but a remap to around 180 bhp sorted that issue.

Perhaps my 1.8tsi experience wasn't completely objective as I've never driven a petrol car for any distance for many years. Didn't feel very lively to me ... but perhaps I wasn't revving it enough. I drove it to get a feel for the Yeti, had no intention of buying a petrol car.
