Oil consumption rates

Featured Replies

Are you all on longlife oil??

I changed once to fixed for the year using 5w40 Fuchs never drank a drop of oil, back to variable this year and its drinking like my old grandad at the weekend.

Anyway great engine just the rest of the bits around it are crap.

I asked Opie for some help, and the recommendation was to use SAE40 to help reduce the consumption rate. I think it is more about the viscosity of the oil than the shear resistance (which is what makes long life oil long life). I don't know how the oil is consumed, assume its just splashing back up through the piston rings and burning in the cylinder with the fuel, judgeing by the smoke haze I get when accelerating. A thicker oil simply won't flwo between the rings and the cylinder walls to easily perhaps....

I've still got about 3 litres of Halfrauds long life VW oil before I can test the theory....

Interesting, iv never heard of sae40 oil though. Is it a brand name for long life?

mine is an 06 with 71k on the clock now and it uses a litre every 1500k or six weeks roughly, it has done this since i bought it with 44k on it.

im on fixed servicing and use 5w40 platinum oil , its only £7 a litre from my local vag specialist.

no, SAE40 is the 40 in a 5W-40 oil, and describes the viscosity rating at a specific temp (100 deg C IIRC) The explanation is in oilman's Oil sticky!

Any issues using 5W40 top-ups with 5W30 put in during last? I have about 3k till next service.

No, you can to up with 5w-40, it's no issue to mix them apparently

2006 TFSI 56K gets thrashed, uses NO OIL in between 6,000 mile oil service.

Makes no difference how I drive mine still uses same amount

Found traces of oil in the intake side of the turbo today, looks like its playing a part in the two stroke vRS cycle.

Mine drinks it like a fish does to water. I'd say 1 litre every 1500 miles.
