Reliability of high miles diesel DSG

Featured Replies

I am thinking about buying a used Octavia II 1.9 PD TDI, MY 2007, 150,000 km with DSG transmission.

It has been serviced regularly.

How reliable is the DSG? Should I am afraid of buying it?

Take it for a good drive and make sure take off is smooth, especially when well warmed up, also changes should be totally seamless on the move. Mine is a pig starting off, very jerky.(122000 miles) Check reversing slowly up an incline, they aren't great anyway but should be reasonably smooth. I'm not aware of any engine issues, very economical usually, can be very rough as you start the engine, I hear lots of Vag cars sound the same, seems normal. Personally I don't like the car (excessive road noise and poor heating/demisting) but for reliability it's probably a better buy than most other cars out there.

  • I was in a local taxi a couple of weekends ago and I was quizzing the cabbie as he had a DSG box. I have too and I was concerned about high mileage. It was an 08 plate which he had had from 1 year old

  • Wow. Impressive mileage for any car that. Just goes to show that there can't be anything inherently wrong with the DSG with high mileage examples like this. Very, very pleased with ours. Love the DS

A question for k.young

What line of work are you in to rack up such miles?

Perhaps you have mentioned but I missed picking up on your comment

Only curious.

I think the wet box with prescribed oil changes is likely to be more durable long term than the 7 speee dry.

400-700km per day!  Based on 550 as an average at 70km/hr average speed that is almost 8 hours driving each day.  Doesn't leave a lot of time for actually meeting customers.

That all depends on how long your day is!!!!

Our car now has the grand total of 28,000 miles on it. A little way off your 595,000 kms k.young!

Still love the DSG. Glad we went for the DSG over another manual.

Mine on 370k now with no gearbox problems at all. Not as smooth as it used to be but still sweet enough.

The only thing I have noticed with the gearbox is when setting off from a standing start if you are a bit too quick on the throttle it must suddenly close the clucth and almost jerks away.

If you are slow/steady on the throttle it's very smooth. Just took a bit of getting used to.
