1.3Mpi running problems (almost) solved

Featured Replies

Just thought I'd post in case what's been going on with my Feli might help someone in a similar predicament.

After dodgy starting and idling for the best part of a year it finally got serious last week when the ******* started to cut out on me on the dual carriageway. I managed to get it off at the next junction and onto a B road, pulled over and checked under the bonnet and got it started again but it didn't feel happy at all. No power then all of a sudden it would lurch forward etc.

Took it to the garage in my folks' village who had a look at it straight away, gave it a fault code scan and it came up with a faulty engine speed sensor and a faulty lambda sensor. Turns out the wiring to the lambda sensor was damaged which meant it has been overfuelling (no wonder it felt so fast recently) so they've repaired that with no need for a new sensor.

The engine speed sensor had to be replaced though, and this seems to be what was causing the dodgy starting and cutting out. They think in the past where the thermostat housing or CTS has been replaced coolant has been spilt all over the sensor and gradually ruined it.

The idle is now higher than before (just over 1000rpm when cold, it used to be about 700) and the speedo needle doesn't wobble as it used to. The idle still wavers a little when cold which I think points to the throttle body needing a clean and throttle gasket replacing but I can never find the time to get to a dealers and get the gasket so will try and do that in the near future.
