Oil Consumption Update

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'll keep this as brief as possible...I purchased a 60 plate Polo Gti in May 2011 last year from a VW dealership as a used approved with 6k on the clock. I bought the car on finance and added a big deposit.

The piston rings replaced all under warranty in Dec 2011. This didn't help with the consumption at all so at the end of Feb 2012 I took the car back to the dealership but they have come back with a very strange response:

VW currently don't have a fix for the car and are looking into it, in the meatime we will give you an endless supply of oil..... Firstly I find it unacceptable for me to keep topping my car up and be concerned each time I drive the car that its chewing through oil and secondly that VW are "working on a solution" to quote VW UK not the dealer "could be a week, could be a month, could be a year until they have a fix"

So I gave VW a month to source the problem, that was 2 months ago they couldn't find one, and after much consultation with VW Customer Services etc the car is still unfixed.

Further to this I contacted the previous owner about the car only to find out he rejected it for oil consumption, the dealership lied to me as I directly asked the question why it was for sale after 6 months and they gave me a fake story about him wanting to change the colour which he has said is completely untrue. He's been a legend and is willing to help me further down the line if it goes that far

So it all adds up to a bit of lemon by the sounds of it, VW at the dealership won't give me my money back at this stage and VW finance are involved trying to resolve it.

Its all a bit of mess really which I've had to seek legal advice over

Certainly left a bitter taste in my mouth as I'm left with a non working car with no solution insight and they are fighting giving me anything back for it furious.gif

Any advice/help gratefully received

They do seem to have had some issues with the early batches of cars using a lot of oil - I hope they find a fix and you get your money back!

Its worse when you have finance as you are paying for a car that isn't working as intended!

My Fabia is burning loads of oil too, I am now at the point where oil is free! I have been told by an independent VW specialist that the cylinder bores are plasma (I think) treated, this makes them very hard wearing, as a result this makes it difficult to run the engine in, as the Fabia does short journeys I have accepted this, I have a mate with the exact same car just a few months newer, his uses little oil.

I have asked the dealer to look into this closer when the first service was done, I was told they would take the car for a few days, measure the oil consumption and then make a decision on how to proceed, I will chase this up on 21st when my Yeti is in for service as I have heard nothing as yet.

I like yourself got the car on a PCP/finance, so ultimately I have a strong case to give the car back so I am not too worried about it , oil is free and I check it on a Sunday morning and top up.

Maybe a track day will cure it? or kill it?

New engine is the answer, my fabia has had a new engine and is fine now and a mates 11plate polo gti also had the piston rings first then they replaced the engine and his is also fine now, i also have just completed the car rejection and am waiting for my new car to be delivered which i have gone for a diesel octavia due to the different engine and car. But i also had a lot of other issues with the car

The advice i would give is read the other Posts and threads in this section and back just a few pages.

Print some of these out

& then get your Legal advice, leaving some of the Threads from this Section & Forum with the Solicitor.

Contact your Local Trading Standards Officers

, raise a case & then furnish them with the copies & the Links to these threads.

Forward all the Emails you send to VW/VAG or when it is Skoda's, then to Skoda UK.

You might as well forward all these Emails as well, to

Any Motoring Press & Media Editors. Sky News, BBC Breakfast, Watchdog, Top Gear, 5th Gear & every car magazine that you find an Email Address for.

It actually takes less than half a day, and if everyone bothered to bother when having the pithh taken, we would all have less problem with Car Manufactures, but actually more importantly with their pathetic Dealerships in most cases.

I can not see why some of these Franchises & workshops get to keep representing Manufacturers.

They sell and trade, resale & sell arrange finance in cars not fit for purpose. Fraud & other laws being comitted in many cases time after time.

You actually should be able to have your problem sorted or resolved by the end of this week.

Dont let them walk all over you.

My 2011 Fabia vRS has done 12k miles now, and goes through about 1.5L of oil per 1000 miles.

If anything it's getting worse, not better.

Just going through the process of contacting the dealership in Aberdeen to get the issue resolved (did it verbally after about 4k miles and was told there is no oil consumption issue with the engine).

Service has been good so far, but it's a total pain for me to get to the dealership, so I'm not looking forward to a lot of messing about visiting for investigations.

If it is 'Specialist Cars Skoda' Aberdeen, part of the 'John Clark Motor Group' that you have to visit,

they should know full well about high oil usage on Fabia vRS's.

Just dont let them pretend that its an unusual thing. & mess about.

Put everything in writing and follow up with copies of Emails, (Managing Director & Workshop Manager) to them and to Skoda UK,

(copies to forward to a Solicitor & Trading Standards in you need to raise a complaint with them)

be sure that you get prompt replies, after all i am sure they dont need customers taking Legal Action or Aberdeens Trading Standards getting involved.

Couresy car for you while they check out then fix your car should be about right.

After all its Skoda that will foot the bill, not them.

Even get them to have a car delivered to you & yours collected if you have a faulty car through Manufacturing Design or parts.

I'm going to contact Skoda Uk about this on Monday as my dealer just said 'this is normal'

Could a Briskoda mod see if there would be a willingness to set up a combined 'case' to support all owners in this? It sounds like some people have had new cars/new engines/ guaranteed free oil.... This doesn't seem right to me....

Are the Vw, seat and Audi engine owners having the same problem ?

Well, Specialist Cars did pretend that the oil consumption is an unusual issue, and stated that up to 1 litre per 1000 miles is acceptable.

Anyway, they took the car in to check it over, and get a call today - Skoda UK have approved the work required, whole new engine.

Just need them to redo the rear bumper now, that lost paint when washed (with garden hose!).

They do because thats the only option, changing the scraper rings does nothing when they were done on my mates polo so he had engine, and o refused to accept the piston ring and piston change

I know they did replace some engine.Just don't understand why they lying to customer.
