Rear bushes on front wishbones (TDI)

Featured Replies

My Octy picked up advisories for the rear bushes on both sides at its MOT the other day.

I have had a read through this thread: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/156021-changing-wishbones-few-questions/

So that covers most of it. The standard bushes have lasted the best part of 200k, so should I just stick some more for them in (from VAG dealer / Euro / GSF)?

Is it worth changing anything else on the wishbones while I have them out?

I am also considering a red dogbone mount, as sometimes my gearchanges are a bit rubbish. Normally occurs at speed when performing an overtake - between 4th and 5th it can feel like there is a lump of rubber in the way blocking the change.

Thanks,

Matt

If you fancy having major cabin vibration (re: mount) go ahead! :S

Or...

You could replace the bushings on the shifter itself and then re-adjust the shift cables which would result in a much better shift.

Then if it still feels soft, replace the mount with a new standard one. Personally for me it's just not worth having that amount of discomfort for that.

If your running standard suspension i would just stick another set of standard bushs in as i didn't really notice much differance swopping to the solid bushs,

Plus if your running standard suspension the up and down movement will just rip the solid bushs to bits in no time, at least with the voided bushs they have allow for some movement

Are we talking about the rear axle bushes?

If we are, the Fabia VRS rear axle bush is a decent replacement.... Bowders1 put up a decent guide on it, but it seems his pics have vanished:

It is pretty self-explanatory though. Cut/drill the old ones out, press the new ones in.

Or buy the bushes and take it to your local indie to press them in. Your call.

Edit: Ignore me - I missed the 'front wishbones' bit to this. Too many painkillers. Time for bed Chris

We are talking bushes on the front wishbones. I have already replaced the rear beam bushes with Fabia vRS ones in an attempt to resolve my dodgy tyre wear.

Standard suspension, although I expect that may be a bit tired - changed it all around the 90k mark (iirc). Standard bushes it is - nice and cheap!

wrt: the gear changes it only happens sometimes, so maybe I worry about that on the next pass :-)

If you wanted a more uprated (but standard) setup, you could go for something like:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK4-R32-AUDI-S3-TT-LOWER-CONTROL-SUSPENSION-ARM-BUSH-MEYLE-HD-HEAVY-DUTY-/150814181996?pt=UK_Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Other_Vehicle_Parts_Accessories_ET&hash=item231d39ca6c#ht_978wt_764

I've used meyle stuff before on my Fabia - they were excellent. And there are plenty of beemer owners that swear by the meyle stuff for their bushes for an uprated yet more everyday feel.

See? I am awake now!

In fact... I think I might pick up some of those myself hahaha! D'oh! You've made me spend money!

Oh and yes, spending money is what happens when you use Brisky....

I got my TT bushes from here;

I you dont have access to a press, they are not easy to fit as they are very tight.

Thanks.

I don't have easy access to a press, I do have a largish vice though.... A garage down to the road to my parents can be quite accommodating if necessary...

A large vice works, but you will need something the right size to push against and it will need to have a hole in the middle to allow the metal sleeve for the centre bolt to come through so that you are not pushing against it as you insert the bush.

Make sure that it goes in square too, otherwise it will jam.

Alternatively, you could just buy some nice new arms with the standard bushes already in and make life easy, that's what I'll be doing next time!

I could buy the arms, but they cost more money..... I like the cheap approach, and I guess most of the hard work is in removing/refitting the arms.

The challenge is fun....

You'll find that copious amounts of washing up liquid will help you lubricate when you press them in... ;)

waxoil is one of my friends too

You don't want anything oil-based to help if you can help it - the bush may rotate/slip once it's installed.

At least with washing up liquid, a good rinse down should ensure it'll not go any further once it's in ;)

if it needs a 10 ton press to force it in and they can only be inserted from one side i'd say its HIGHLY unlikely it will go anywhere once installed

I like the cheap approach and took that view when it came to renewing mine. I had done the same job previously on a Mk2 Golf GTI and thought it would be fairly straight forward, but the bushes are a much, much tighter fit.

Removing and refitting the arms took less time than fitting the bushes......

Tight fit = more fun :wonder:

I'll go for the bushes and give myself the weekend it do the job. Are there any gotka's for removing the arms / any other bits I need to buy/renew while I have them off?

I guess I will need to get the tracking checked afterwards....?

Tracking checked afterwards is a given.

As for any gotchas... Not many that I can think of.

If you're looking at the rears, obviously consider looking at the fronts... And i'm not entirely sure whether the bolts are use once then replace.

I think that the bolts are stretch bolts, so single use. I replaced all of mine when I did this.
