Yes it's Black and yes it is magic! Anyone got any good tips?

Recommended Posts

Ok, so, after a long wait I have taken the plunge.

And got myself a 58 Octy vRS in Black, with the following factory fitted options;

  • Rear Parking Sensors
  • Cruise Control
  • Silver Roof Bars
  • Sunroof
  • Sunset Privacy Glass
  • Xenons
  • Sat Nav (columbus)
  • Heated seats
  • Rain Sensor

So as you can imagine I am happy, but now I need to know more. Any good tips for the car and/or the kit would be good!

Cheers!

Having been an owner of a 56 plate Black Magic vRS my biggest tip for you is - Don't drive it......ever.

The black looks amazing when it's been clean. There was no feeling like standing back and looking at mine once it had been cleaned and polished.

2 minutes later and a quick drive to the shops, all the dirt shows up and it looks "meh" again!

Nice enough specification, assuming this is an estate? Didn't think Privacy glass was an option on the hatch.

So long as all that kit is factory fitted then I'd say not really much to add to it.

If boot used alot, do get the rubber mat for it.

Same goes for the interior, although I find the rubber mats a bit cheapo.

Drivers mat is showing to much wear by the pedals.

Congrats on the car...looks a crackin spec

Defo worth getting a boot mat - makes a huge difference to the overall quality of the carpet in the boot!

How about adding a Bluetooth kit? I added one to mine and love it.

Very true what Stoofa says about black ones being dirt magnets. Well....no more so than any other colour, it's just that you see it more on a black one! But short of wrapping it in cling film, there's nothing really you can do to avoid it though so just get on and enjoy the car. I've found with mine that when I polish it, it's quite easy to miss the bits of polish that trickle round the edges of the trim lines/door handles/etc...and on the black paintwork it's very visible there once you've finished. There are probably to devices/gadgets to rectify this but I just use to a thumbnail in a cloth to scrape it out ;-)

Peanut butter for the polish on black plastic, although make sure its the smooth one.....

Or alternatively use one that doesnt matter if it goes on the black platsic trim bits, I use Gtech P1 polish and also Autobrite Cherry Glaze which is an all in one, doenst matter if you go over trims as it doesnt stain, you just buff it up and job done.

Really though nice spec for the OP, black is a cracking colour when clean, just get a good quality wax or sealent on it and that will help repel dust and make cleaning a lot eaiser in the future.

Two words, remap, and remap.

 Mild ignorance alert...

Remap, or plug in box? What's the difference?

AKAIK a remap is rewriting various bits of data into the ECU which can only be removed by reprogramming again.

Agree to all the comments re. Black cars, + they seem to attract bird-poo too!

Good colour for a vRS, (IMVHO) not uncommon for unmarked traffic-plod cars either...... & a little unusal for a hot-hatchback.

I'm very happy with my AMD remap, (as is 'er indoors & her EOS) but there seem to be many other reputable outfits that

can make your vRS into something it's not supposed to be.

Enjoy it! David C.

A remap is basically reprogramming the engine ecu, in crude terms it keeps the wastegate closed until a higher boost pressure is achieved. More air means more fuel equals more power. The skill is in reconfiguring the other engine parameters so that it still runs within its design envelope, including emissions etc. For £400 or so, you can improve the performance by around 20%, and you might find there's little penalty in insurance if you shop around with a specialist broker. It's by far the cheapest way to owning a faster car, plus no one expects a Skoda to go so quickly. Shark, revo, amd are all popular maps, and all have their own fans. I can tell you that shark are great to deal with, and the map feels like the standard car with no nasty surprises, just a lot faster. A lot faster :)

Ignore everyone else, Black is the best colour. Yes it is a nightmare to keep clean, but I enjoy cleaning it. I wash/polish every other week. If you keep on top of it you will be fine.

Got a black VRS, looks great as the fixed colour stuff (chrome bits, lights, break callipers, etc) contrast very nicely with black. Imo doesn't show dirt up more then any other colour.

My one tip is paint is very soft when hot. Sun on black paint heats it up pretty easily. If you try to wash it then you will scratch it.

I ran a white car for 10 years and now have both a black magic and race blue Octavia. In my experience the black doesn't show up the dirt any more than the other colours.

Right! I've got it!! And wow do I have some learning to do... just how much stuff can I do with the columbus!

One question, which I have seen commented on elsewhere. There is noticeable road/tyre noise from the back end, is this just my first experience of estates or is it to do with the Falken Bridgestone combo on the back?

Pictures later today... If I can get out from behind the wheel!
