OEM rear view camera in VRS

Featured Replies

Hi all

Is it possible to get an OEM VW camera to work with the Octavia?

I have the columbus unit RNS510 so getting picture shouldn't be a problem, however NOBODY on the forums seems to have done the above.

I would like to

1) keep my reversing sensors on screen whilst camera activated

2) have active lines on camera if possible

3) be able to release the trunk

I know the TIGUAN camera does this but dont think it will fit in the Octavia?

great car the VRS but a rear view camera would set it off.

I am interested in this topic. I recently purchased a camera and was looking at the best place to install it. I have a Chinese after market head unit which has the capability. When I go into reverse the camera picture function starts but obviously I just have a blank screen.

My questions are,

1) Which camera are you referring to above. Do you have a link to one that can be purchased or has a spceicifcation.

2) What position is it installed on the car? Anyone got any pictures?

Regards

DTM: I've not installed on a Skoda before but did so on my old e46.

a. Make sure you have the right variant. PAL or NTSC.

b. Location will entirely depend on the type of camera. If it's bullet style then, in line with Parking Sensors would make sense; If it has a mounting bracket or "wings" then under the boot's grab handle would probably work best.

works fine !

for info, the description is not correct in the text! The gate opener is replaced, NOT the numberplate light as stated here :wall:

Looks great VRSFAN, thanks. So it actually replaces the boot opener? I presume you can still open the boot using the pad or is it redundant?

Looks good... Is that PAL or NTSC?

Lots of info on www.vwnavi.com

You can fit VW cameras from various cars. It was on my to-do list but I realised I don't need it so i will spend the cash elsewhere.

Ok happy to replace one of the boot lights but i have heard the ebay cameras have problems engaging when in reverse. How do you stop them from always being on? Do you need some sort of electronic switch which recognises the reverse signal?

Also, the first camera has no light which I would need

My preference is for OEM style like an original VW camera. I think the Tiguan version might work but its clear nobody has done this from the lack of response or how to.

Might be just a pipe dream

The 'switch' is normally just spliced into the reversing bulb.

........and the connection on the back of the Columbus is???........

Is this available on the standard stereo? Would it be the bolero?

Thanks

Does this mean I can just buy a cheap ebay camera http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SONY-CCD-CAR-REAR-VIEW-REVERSE-BACKUP-CAMERA-SKODA-ROOMSTER-OCTAVIA-TOUR-/230719538998?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35b7f4c736#ht_7793wt_1110 and splice the cables to the reversing bulb ?Looking at http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/a6/vw-sportwagen-backup-camera-oem-retrofit.htm it looks a lot more complicated than that

I thought the camera was connected into the back of the h/u and was activated from there, just like parking sensors. I don't think anything other than Columbus (or RNS510) supports the camera.

From what I recall the camera is connected to the bottom connector:

....although the RNS 510 (according to the spec) has a RCA video input.

Essentially I don't think you need to be splicing anything anywhere for the camera, just for connecting the plate-light,

The pop-out camera like on a VW would mean cutting a hole behind the Skoda logo and finding a way to securly mount all the kit too, considering it'll take a pounding when closing the tailgate.

how does the headunit know when the car is in reverse ? I am sure it would need some form of controller right?

Can somebody simply tell me the part numbers they bought for this install that will help greatly.

nothing definitive yet but i am sure I am not the only Octavia VRS owner who would like a reverse camera???

I would but dont have columbus if that makes a difference

With a VAG group camera fitted, one of the wires in the camera loom is connected to the reverse light, when these are powered it signals the camera to 'on'. No controller is needed, some VAG cars do use a seperate controller - thats for things the self park system etc - that doesnt work with the Octavia.

As for part numbers, did you check out www.vwnavi.com like I mentioned? It has been done to an Octavia numerous times. There are several threads on there discussing the process and quoting the VAG part numbers of the parts required.

It's all part of the CANBus system. In the same way that the stereo (I've got a Stream MP3 at the moment) knows to go into "reverse" mode and call up a picture of the car. (Also to put the air-con on re-circ as you're driving through your own fumes)

Are you still happy with this camera, thinking of purchasing one myself as I'm trying to avoid messing around with the licence plate light replacement cameras as I don't want any can bus warnings?

I bought this one, installed it and it works fine with my Chinese HU.

http://www.hids4u.co.uk/integrated-rear-view-camera-for-volkswagen-skoda.html

Removing the boot catch and installing the new one was a doddle. The tricky bit was feeding the wire from the boot lid through to the car. I took mine up to the top of the window and then fed through the rubber pipe and down into the rear of the car.

I installed a separate 12v feed straight from the fuse box and pushed the activation wire into my rear reversing bulb connection. All activates fine when I go into reverse.

What is the intended purpose of this camera?

Can this camera be linked up to the columbus? If so, how?

http://www.hids4u.co...agen-skoda.html

I've been looking into this and from searching it seems that the Columbus can be linked up with an external camera. A quick PM to one of the members who has done the fit will answer how.

What is the intended purpose of this camera?

It's purpose is to be able to see behind you when reversing your vehicle.

What is the intended purpose of this camera?

I would guess so they can see the car

As a gadget it's cool, but as a driving aid i think they are a waste of time. when reversing you should be looking all around and using your mirrors. Just saw a women in tescos using hers to park and nearly hit a car till i shouted at her. she the turns round and says i didn't see it on my screen. she was using the stereo screen the whole time she was parking never even looked out the window once.
