Dewi (sort of) abroad.

Featured Replies

Well, Yetiistas, Dewi will be crossing the border into englandshire on Friday afternoon, complete with the tin (aluminium and fibreglass really) snail shell for the annual Davis family holiday.

5 nights at a CSMA caravan rally in Craven Arms (God, I must be mad staying there!) then all the way across the shires until we reach Coltishall, near Norfolk. SWMABO has decreed that she is going to be lazy and not do a lot, so it looks like it is going to be a lot of meals out or BBQ's if the weather is "pleasant".

I suppose we are going to have to go to Cromer as Sheila wishes her annual fix of fresh crab and prawns, and I have put my foot down with a firm hand and said we WILL be undertaking a trip on the Bure Valley Railway, but that has to be accompanied with a Broads trip (Note the capital letter Bob!!)

Snail shell shall be collected from storage tomorrow, and I hope everything works!! Sods Law says at least one bulb will have popped and I have a funny feeling that the leisure battery has taken it's own holiday. It is 3 years old!!

Photos WILL be taken but She does moan when I include the car in them.

Busmans holiday?

Hope the weather does stay good.

Holiday travelling on bank holiday weekend?!

At least most of the traffic will be going the other way :)

Beers almost as good as Yorkshire if a bit flat.

Cue Bob the Dog.

Have a good time.

Cheers

Well it is only about an hour to Craven Arms, and it is a very lightly used road, and most of the traffic will be going the other way!!

And I will NOT be going into their signalbox. It's a feet-up job for me to enjoy myself, and I like taking photos of narrow gauge trains.

George, I'm taking the song book to let them hear some culture!!

Funnily enough ther boat trip goes from Wroxham. Don't know that collection so shall Google.

Couple of potentials here for the Wednesday joke...

"All the way to Norfolk to get crabs.."

"I have put my foot down with a firm hand.."

Have a great time

Sing them "Four Strong Winds", cos its very flat over there, and them winds they do blow. Oh aaahrr!

Dew yew pronounce it 'Crewmer' (and Stiffkey is 'Stookey', and Letheringsett is 'Larnsett', and Costessey is 'Cossey', and Wymondham is 'Windham') and thar'll be thinking yews a native bor.

Get yourself round to Horsey. Have a look up the National Trust windmill (which existed to drain the fields rather than grind corn) and take a walk to the beach to see the seals. Drop in at the Nelson Head for a fine drop of Adnams or Woodfordes and a decent lunch. The boat tour from here ( Horsey Mere on the Lady Anne) is much better than any that go from Wroxham - you'll see the true rural beauty of the Broads rather than 'grocklesville'.

Can you sail? An even better way to see the Broads is to hire a halfdecker (20' open keelboat) from 'Whispering Reeds' at Hickling and sail round to Horsey.

Cookies crab shop, Salthouse. Phone and book a table for lunch - you won't get in if you just turn up. Take your own bottle - they don't have a license.

Cheers Bob.

I know that where we're staying is Cotishal, so I is laarning!

Reason I said about the boat from Wroxham is that the Bure Valley do a combined ticket, and to get the railway then The Boss says she has to have the boat trip! However note taken about the rest, especially the restaurant.

Sail? What's that!!

If you want a really good meal (albeit a bit on the expensive side) the Gunton Arms at Gunton is very good.

The Black Boys at Aylsham does decent pub grub. Aylsham is at one end of the Bure Valley railway, and the pub is about a 10/15 minute walk into the town centre/market square.

I've been told that the Thai restaurant in Coltishall is good - but I've never been there myself.

It would be pushing it to describe Cookies as a 'restaurant'. He operates from an old shed, and around the shed he's erected various bits of wood and plastic sheeting to create some kind of shelter. Nonetheless, it's a Norfolk institution, always full/busy because the food is excellent. Seafood platters made to order ... local crabs, prawns, shellfish, smoked fish.

I suspect that we will be eating out a lot!!

We normally have a sandwich lunchtime and a pubby type meal in the evening, though the Thai sounds good.

Thanks.

Enjoy Graham!

Our snail shell is staying at home this weekend ( been out the last three) as its not a holiday here so I'm at school on Monday ... off Tuesday, then back to school on Wednesday!

However school finishes for the summer on 29 June ... then we'll be hitting the highways with Yentle and Benny ... got a weekend or two away to look forward to meantime.

Make sure you get loads of Yeti and caravan pics!!

With The Boss's permission, hopefully!

Graham, Joking apart mate, Hope you have a loverly time on your Jollies

Keep safe

Andy

Have a good trip Graham looking forward to the photos  , not been to that part of the country maybe one day I will give the yeti a trip that way.

The Walpole at Itteringham is excellent, the Buckinghamshire Arms at Blickling is pretty good. The Gate of India in Aylsham is good if you enjoy a curry. There used to be a decent Italian place on Wroxham station - not sure if it's still there. Take home some smoked fish from the Cley Smokehouse, and put it with other delights from Picnic Fayre, the deli in Cley ...

Best leave it until September-the roads will be choked with caravanners until then.

Cley Smokehouse is a must visit if you want Kippers/Bloaters and Wells next the Sea has a great seafood caravan Frary's on the quayside where they sell their own catch-there is a miniature railway which runs from near the quay to the lifeboat station. Mainly a children's thing but will merit a quick look.

Look out for roadside sellers of Samphire which you eat like asparagus lightly boiled and dragged through butter/black pepper on the edge of your plate before nibbling the fleshy part from the core.

Have a great holiday in a lovely part of the world.

Exactly right! Friendship, joshing, Yeti help, fun and support.

It makes it all kinda unique, doesnt it?

Yes, I like that aspect. I'm active on another forum where "This is the way I do it, why don't you" is common, and another where aggression is rife, in and amongst the help. Neither evidences much joshing and fun amongst the help and support.

What do you mean help? I'm trying to get the old bugger a good dose of food poisoning  .

No, seriously these are all great places. Norfolk's my home and I love it to bits ... hope you have a great time there Graham. Don't miss out on Holkham beach, and then Holkham Hall to see the house and/or the transport museum, the deer park and the lake. A spot of lunch at the Victoria or there's a decent enough cafe at the Hall.

I suspect you'd enjoy this place (if the boss will allow it).

You could trade off by taking her to Ranworth, where if you visit the church (and have a head for heights) you can climb the steps inside the church tower and emerge on top for the best possible overview of the northern rivers and Broads. The Norfolk Wildlife Trust boardwalk at Ranworth leads to a visitor centre and a hide where you can watch the birdies if that takes your fancy.

To get back from Ranworth to Coltishall you may find that you have to drive via Woodbastwick ... an unfortunate inconvenience since you may feel obliged to stop for refreshments at the 'Fur and Feather' ... which happens to be the home of the Woodfordes Brewery. Obviously if you're driving you'll not be able to sample all they have on offer - but they'll happily pull you a couple of pints of Wherry Bitter (a light bitter), Nelson's Revenge (a darker, stronger bitter - my personal recommendation), Norfolk Nog (darker and stronger still) or Headcracker (paracetomol at the ready) in a plastic jug - or offer a mixed case of bottles to take away.

Oh, and on the subject of railways ... there's another little one that runs from Wells next the Sea to Warsingham, but there's also a full size railway running steam trains between Sheringham and Holt. Walk into Holt to have coffee and cake at Byfords, and something to take home from the Adnams Beer and Wine shop.

And did I mention the Wiveton Cafe for lunch ... or the Wiveton Bell pub? The road signs round here are written in local dialect ... so you may encounter one saying "Slow you down" as you approach a village or tight bend.

Blickling Park, Sheringham Park (you might just catch the end of a stunning rhododendron and azalea display - climb the tower for the best view, looking down on the trees and bushes) and Felbrigg are all lovely National Trust woodlands - with grand houses also at Blickling and Felbrigg.
