Gentlemen, start your TSI engines !

Ever wondered which TSI engine in Octavia has the best fuel economy?

There's been a nicely planned and well-executed comparison done by a Czech magazine World of Engines (Svet motoru), revealing that.......you may read it yourselves  :

Translation is a bit "robotic", but anyway, the message is clear. Show the middle finger to the down-sizing!

a bit? "in addition looks like it is "downsizovaný" just a bit. What kind of sense to have such a glutton? Throw ice could be someone who goes štreka long fast on highways. But it is worth more diesel, right?"

Yoda on speed.

The trick is to make the translation from Czech to Chinese, THEN from Chinese to English. Works retteb hcum.

Find after will get on top you see so eldoon will soft backwards for iST 8.1 Much less jam!

Sorry, What!?!

Perzactly !

So what's the conclusion from that article?

Depends tahw transzxlaticy you read, 2 me it sounded like 1.8 surprisingly enocomic but I could have tog that wring.

Still a mystery why Skoda are dropping the 1.8 Tsi from the range?

The 1.4 TSI makes the same power, and if you want more, you go for a 2.0 TSI...

There was a newspaper article recently that explained how more and more small engines are being developed that, due to advanced engineering and design, are producing as much power as currently larger engines, and more economically.

I guess it is just scientific progress. Just as my previously mentioned Escort with the Capri GT V6 (3 litre) was not as fast or crisp as my current 1.8 TSi.

I'll be a little sad to see the 1.8 disappear (if it does so altogether) but it will be interesting to get into, maybe, a 1.2 one day (quite soon) and find it has the same kind of kick!

For example, I was surprised, about 4 years ago, at the feel of a Nissan Micra Urbis 1.2 I had as a loan car. No idea what the figures would have been but it felt good to drive!

No suprise to some of use.

Particularly if you go for the 7 speed DSG option. Could get over 50 mpg on a gentle cruise in the 1.8 TSI DSG, seen the mileage range show over 650 miles.

Always felt I would not have got much better if I had gone for a 1.4 or 1.2 litre option.

Better there is far far more to come from the TSIs.

The VVT engines, 1.8 litre, easily do over 50 mpg combined not just on extra urban, with 2 cylinder shut off as well making an appearance on some TSIs 60 mpg is possible on the combined cycle.

I would want to go for a VVT TSI next so I hope Skoda get this engine

Do you mean the 1.4 is the same power as the 1.8?

The Octavia 1.4tsi has 122 BHP, the 1.8 tsi has 160... quite a difference IMO... I have driven both

1.4 Tsi 0-60 is a uninspiring 9.7 seconds whilst the 1.8 manages it in 8 or 7.8 in a face lift... night and day!

I think Babs is referrring to the 180PS Twincharger version of the 1.4TSI engine.

Yes, there is that - but VAG have also been testing a 160ps version of the single turbo 1.4, which will no doubt replace the 1.8 in the line up, as the next-generation 2.0 TSI will be getting on for 250ps.

Good to here the future is Petrol!!

My understanding of this article was that the 1.2, 1.4 & 1.8 engine all have very similar mpg, although each performs a little better in a given situation but when all the scenarios are combined ( as in everyday driving ) there was very little difference between them.

To my mind this makes the 1.8 a really good choice?

I would have thought it is always better to have a bigger engine (a good one anyway) working less hard, than a small one always working at the ragged edge!

Although the smaller engines are producing good BHP figures by virtue of turbos, a smaller engine will always lack the torque and therefore the sheer oomph and pulling power of the same kind of engine with a larger capacity. The 1.8Tsi is particularly noticeable because the torque in ft lbs well exceeds the BHP figure by a good margin and not many petrol engines display that characteristic. The 1.8 is a truly excellent engine, (I've had a 1.8Tsi Elegance for a couple of years) and it's a shame that it appears that it is being dropped from the range.

Look at the latest Octavia brochure and it appears that Skoda have dropped from the Octavia range; the 1.2, the 1.8, the 110 BHP 2ltr diesel, (but kept the 140 BHP diesel 2ltr) and have also dropped the L&K version.

I happened to be in my local dealer the other day, (wife's nipper has ordered a Citigo) and I asked the Salesman why Skoda are dropping those engines. I was told that all suffered from sluggish sales in the UK. and that's the reason folks.

I'm sorry to say that that makes sense to me, but what a terrible shame the 1.8Tsi is being dropped from the Octavia range. It was a really under rated package. Looks like a Vrs next time or will there be a version of the new Rapid with decent performance? I used to only run diesels, but I don't do many miles now and what with the big extra cost of a diesel car, the extra fuel costs and all the DPF horror stories, I've gone back to crash and burn technology !!

Hope they don't make the new Octavia much bigger - the Vrs looks stunning in Race Blue..........................

I dont think thats the real reason. The current Octavia is on the run out. The Rapid is being produced now and the Octavia 3 is starting production shortly. Many of those "discontinued engines" are being redirected to the new models. I think there is also a shortage of certain engines due to demand from VW,SEAT,China etc. leading to long lead times which go beyond the Octavia 3 launch date.

I personally don't know the real answer - but that's what the salesperson from my local Skoda dealership told me. I can only assume that his info is accurate, there would appear to be a certain logic to what he said. Time will tell...............

As an Octy driver of a bout 4 weeks with a 1.4TSI motor in it, I really can't get over just how good that engine is, especially when compared to engines of only a few years ago. I had a Nissan tino (almera on steroids) which had a 1.8i engine in it and that could hardly pull the skin off a bowl of rice pudding! the engine in me Octy is streets ahead of it in terms of performance, economy, torque (yes, torque) ease of use in town, and fair performance on the motorway. A lot of people who've been in the car can't believe its only a 1.4 until I tell them.
