SMD LED Interior Bulbs.

Featured Replies

Has anyone installed these on the FL VRS?. If so do they dim down like the filament bulbs and have you had any issues with them?.

Also, what size are required? Planning on replacing all of them.

Thanks.

You need W5W (501) bulbs, the best I have come across are these although they do not need to be CANBUS, at this price you may as well get error free ones.

They dim just like the OE bulbs.

Are they all W5W? If so, how many do I need?. Sorry for all the questions but the car hasn't been delivered yet but was hoping to order them to fit when it arrives.

It's an estate BTW.

For the tailgate and mirrors (puddle lights) these will be better as all the lights protrudes from the side.

2x tailgate

2x mirrors

For the interior lights then these I linked to above are ideal as the light shines 360°

Not sure how many the Octavia uses, but on the Superb estate it is 2 in the front and 3 in the rear, someone with an Octavia estate will no doubt confirm if they are the same.

You can also do the warning lights in the doors (these are CANBUS controlled) but the only problem there is a white LED/SMD bulb will show a pinkish light through a red lens - for this reason I did not change mine.

You also have a pair of festoon bulbs behind the sunvisors - not sure on their size as I don't use them so have not changed them.

The FL Octavia has 4 x of W5W's (2 front and 2 back interior) + 2 x 40mm festoons (1 x front & back) + 1 x W5W in each mirror + door safety lights (37mm festoons) + trunk 2 x W5W.

You can use NON-Canbus for the interior front & rear but they do glow eventhough turned off. Canbus ones don't glow, so better get canbus.

I have these ones in my car working, not glowing, dimming + White non-bluish:

http://www.ebay.com/...984.m1497.l2649

And for festoons front and back some Philips ones bought locally.

There is no lights in sunvisors in Octavia.

If you want to do all, you will need:

8 x W5W

2 x 39-41mm festoon

2 x 36-37 mm festoon

+ some small festoon for the glove compartment if you want to (don't know the size for this one)

for the 40mm festoons - wat will fit best?

3x SMD?

led-auto-bulb--37mm--3-smd-leds-849.jpg

6x SMD?

9x SMD?

don't want to get ones that r too big n won't fit.

also, which ones to keep the "glow" effect: canbus or non-canbus?

I have the 3 SMD as rear interior lights, they are bright enough and a good fit.

Beware, with the W5W type, that they do not have a metal base between the connection and the LED.

Obviously it will cause short circuit and blown fuses.

If using them for the boot lights, some of the W5W have a base diameter which is too large so very difficult to fit and will bend the contacts.

I gave up with trying different suppliers and went with the superskoda boot lights in the end. Straight swap and very bright

Theres plenty of room for the festoon's, mostly up to you, how much light are you after. 3 SMD should be fine.

If you want them to glow then use NON-canbus.

I converted most of my standard bulbs to LEDs today (still waiting for the parts to arrive to do the proper job on the number plates as described here). The various LED bulbs provided at extortionate expense by SuperSkoda worked well, with one exception, the front centre light by the mirror. The kit supplied is basically a small board with 10 LEDs soldered to it and double-sided sticky taped polystyrene "arms" attached to it to allow it to be mounted nicely into the recess. It's cabled to a dummy festoon bulb, so in theory a nice tidy solution...except when you've got a factory-fitted sunroof, in which case the recess is smaller than standard, so the polystyrene arms had to be modified. to make it fit. That aside, they look good and were easy to fit.

I managed to damage the glovebox light in my attempts to remove it. Just shows, you should always look on this forum if you aren't sure what to do, as the removal was perfectly described here.

There are 2 more lighting jobs, I'd like to attempt:

1. Replace the door mirror puddle lights with LEDs. What type of bulb is used and what's involved in gaining access to them? Are they like the number plates and will throw a CANBUS error?

2. Fit footwell lights, perhaps re-using the units I've now got spare following the boot lighting upgrade.

Any tips on the above would be much appreciated.

Post #4 above will cover the puddle light bulbs, do a youtube search for a mirror removal on any VW Audi or Skoda, easy to do when you know how they are located.

For the footwell lights, IMO you are better off wiring them to the CECM, I did this for the TT (MY11) I would imagine the Octavia is VERY similar?:

(however this way does require VCDS to tick the option of footwell lights)

From MY10 onwards the CECM connections are different, they now look like:

spacer.gifimg11752.jpg

I followed this thread (for a Passat)

http://www.vwaudifor... ... -CC-MY2011

The pin you are looking to use for the positive feed for the lights is pin 50 in the centre (white) plug.

By doing it this way they will work as if they were fitted at the factory - so you have the option of them on whilst you are driving with the lights on, the brightness can also be dimmed through the DIS.(maxidot - I did this for the TT forum)

I used slightly different lights (still OE VAG) than what would of been fitted at the factory - because I had them, the only difference is the corners are slightly squarer and they use a different plug.

I used:

6L0 947 415 - Lights x2

1J0 971 972 Flat connector x2 (these fit into the lights)

000 979 131E Wire set x3

Cut the one wire set in half for the passenger side light (as the wire set's have the terminal on both ends) and lengthen the wires so it reaches the CECM.

The drivers side positive wire is long enough to run from the light to pin 50 on the CECM, cut the end off the negative wire and put a round terminal on bolted to the chassis.

I then simply put some eBay LED's into the lights, something like this:

http://www.ebay.co.u... ... 43ae93c01a

Mine are actually CANBUS LED's, because again I had them.

If you decide to use the TT boot lights instead of the above ones then you will need:

4B0 947 415A Lights x2 (same as the one in the boot / glovebox)

893 971 632 Connector x2 (these are a more square connector)

000 979 133E Wire set x2 (these have larger terminals than the ones I used)

000 979 131E Wire set x1 (the larger 000 979 133 wire sets terminal is too large for the CECM, so you still need one of these)

A very basic wiring diagram:

Fantastic, helpful responses to both my questions within next to no time of my posting the questions, thank you both very much. It's late Sunday night here (and SWMBO has just yelled at me to tell me there's a large pile of ironing in need of my attention :giggle: ), so these are jobs for another weekend, but I'll make a start on getting some parts ordered.

What a great forum this is  .

i was having a quick look (while it was still 'on') at wat the bulb looked like in the boot lights - looks like i touch somewhere and now ALL my interior lights do not work!!!

no bulb errors r thrown on the maxidot.

i'll have to look at the fuse box to see if it's kaputt - #15 (interior lights). hopefully this includes the boot light.

the door lights (next the speakers) r fine.

Gizmo68 - thanks for that write up on the footwell lights. i'm very keen on doing this myself.

Do you have a similar wiring diagram for preFL models please? Looking at 2004 and 2008 models.

Thanks

Mike

I don't Mike no, but do a google search (any VAG car pre MY10 should be the same) as I know there is loads of info available - much more than MY10 onwards.

See if you can see this, I´m new at it

I use Dropbox a little bit and have an account, but even when logged in, I don't have access to the above link. Did you put the file in your public folder? This explanation is provided by Dropbox:

The Public folder lets you easily share single files in your Dropbox. Any file you put in this folder gets its own Internet link that you can share with others -- even non-Dropbox users!

Step 1: Drop a file into the Public folder.

Step 2: Right-click this file, then choose Dropbox > Copy Public Link. This copies an Internet link to your file that you can paste anywhere: emails, instant messages, blogs, etc.

That's it! To share your file, just send the link to a friend.

Happy Dropboxing!

+ some small festoon for the glove compartment if you want to (don't know the size for this one)

The festoon used in the glovebox light is 29mm in length from tip to tip.

I'm struggling to find a 29mm LED festoon bulb. I can see these ones, but they appear to have flat ends and I would think they need to have pointed ends to locate properly in the switch and stay in place.

Anyone come across a suitable bulb?

Why not use a 31mm instead, which should not cause too big a problem to adapt themselves into the existing 29mm socket:

Good idea, if 29mm isn't available in the "pointy-ended" design. I have spare 37mm LED bulbs, but that's just too much of a stretch for the poor old bulb holder.

Just got a price for the parts above from a dealer  looked for 4 as im thinking of doing the rear footwells also, €75 odd when VAT is added :wall:

6L0 947 415 - Lights x4 €10.47+ vat each

1J0 971 972 Flat connector x4 €1.55 each + vat

000 979 131E Wire set x5 €2.43 +vat each

Pass in a scrapyard and get parts with the plugs (with some wire attached), then off a smaller plug get the prpoper terminal to put in the ECU.

For the tailgate and mirrors (puddle lights) these will be better as all the lights protrudes from the side.

2x tailgate

2x mirrors

I ordered these and they arrived today to replace the puddle lights in my mirrors (I've already done the tailgate). Now I look at them, I'm curious why these bulbs, which have their SMDs mounted on the sides, would be better than an LED bulb that throws light downwards, such as this one? Wouldn't that throw a better light out of the puddle lights?

I just fitted the ones suggested by Gizmo. They work perfectly and throw a good light out from the puddle windows on the door mirrors. Certainly tested my nerves taking the mirror glass out! I found with the mirrors set to point fully inwards and downwards, I was just able to get my fingers in behind the glass and apply even and firm pressure until they popped off. From there it was a straightforward job to replace the bulbs; it wasn't even necessary to disconnect the heated glass connection, I just left the mirror glass dangling while I swapped the bulbs.

BTW, I had to smile when I saw the inside of the mirror glass. I saw no mention of Skoda anywhere; the part number said for "Audi B8 S4" :giggle: .
