Intercooler and pipe help

Featured Replies

Hello all

Need a little intercooler advice. I have seen various forge coolers on the forum recomended but as usual being a familly man cant really afford or justify paying out big bucks for that.

I have found various coolers on the dreaded ebay which I know size wise will be fine. I have a pd150 hybrid fitted so want to map the car up to no more than 200bhp with no more than 290 lb torque so as to preserve the clutch etc.

I hear from some members that a side mount cooler from or for a PD150 golf will be fine as its an all metal build an not the plastic naf one that comes as standard.

What are you opinions on this? Do I NEED an FMC for this kind of power?

Many thanks for your help peeps

i would definitely run a front mount if you have that turbo and want to keep that power up for more than 5 minutes otherwise you will suffer with the dreaded heat soak. if you want to save money go for the tx autosport kit like a few of us have done. i am going hybrid and they told me the kit can go upto 300bhp safely. If you dont mind me asking were did you buy your hybrid from?

Hi mate. I got my hybrid from an Edition38 member. He was going to use it as a project but then decided to go to Australia. Took a bit of a risk buting second hand but at least it was from a forum chap. Could you

Possibly post a link to the kit please. Thanks

My Golf, as do the Leon FR/Cupra 150s (PD150) had a front mount, not a side (about the only good thing on that car!). . .

I cant seem to link it at the mo as im on my phone, but if yoy have a look in the group buy section there is info on the kit in there.

Ok, time to revive this thread, Ive found this on ebay http://www.ebay.co.u...7#ht_500wt_1202 I know this will fit with only 20mm being behind the crash bar, I have found the map pipe from forge so I guess I can now find the other silicone pipework and really make up my own fitments without having to route it behind my sump etc. There is something I just dont like about the group buy cooler kit. Or am I just barking up the wrong tree as usual and should just buy the group buy kit, I really really cant afford the forge kit at all. Please help someone as I feel Im :wall:

I was going to go the twin pass route myself it does seem a good idea and I can see why you are put off the group buy owning one myself haha. main reason I went for the group buy was that it had the pipe work included thinking it would be easier but I still had to mess around. Be good if you could source the piping for that twin pass maybe a few people would go this route aswell.

SMIC from Golf/Bora/Leon/Toledo will not fit as the inlet and outlets are at different angles.

Intercooler in your link has a front surface area of approx 1026 cm2 and overall cooling area of 6669 cm3

THS Seat Sport intercooler has a front surface area of approx 1848 cm2 and overall cooling area of approx 12,936 cm3

Only problem is that with the seat sport intercooler you need to modify the crash bar and bumper

In real terms as a daily runner that has the occasional bit of fun would i notice much difference?

Tempted by one of those twin pass ones. Pipe work wouldn't really be much of a ball ache to sort out either.

This is my while point. I just hear that it might increase lag and the temps dont cool as much as a standard intercooler. But im thinking i only want at tops 200bhp from my hybrid so will inotice a difference?

You'll get no lag through the intercooler - you'll notice some more with a hybrid turbo though.

The standard intercooler can't handle anymore than a few quick blasts - easily reaching 50 to 70 degrees. Don't use a standard intercooler on a hybrid - you'll be touching 100 degrees (and I know!)

Yes trust me i know all about the lag. Im hoping once my pipes are sorted a nice remap will sort the lag?

If you go for the twin pass, make a note of what pipes and that you use.

I notice the twin pass is 61mm while the TX one is 57mm, would you need reducers for that?

  • Author

Yes would need reducers for it. Will this loose me presure ar all peeps and hence cause more lag?

No, not at all.

I have 51mm from turbo to intercooler 61mm inlet, then 61mm outlet reducing to 51mm. Then 51mm increasing to 60mm to incorporate my WMI and MAP, reducing back to 57mm at the EGR delete pipe.

Thats giod to know. Think I'm going to order this pipe from ebay and order the map pipe from forge. Once i have fitted te cooler I will work out what else I need. Does this sound a good plan people?
