Had to take my car in to the dealers today to get an awful noise comming from the rear sorted out, sounded to me like wheel bearings, going round a roundabout was deafening! Test drive with the Tech(?) (thought they were mechanics myself!) Nothing wrong with the car thats normal !!!

Never heard so much BullS*** in all my life! Then he turns round and says it's my tyres. Car is 13months old, just turned 16K miles, tyres have 6-7mm of tread. Told to replace all 4 tyres as the car is set up to ride with 3 passengers and lugage all the time !

Well, told my Boss as its a company car... let see what happens... I know one thing.. won't be a Skoda on the next renewal... back to Audi.

take it to another stealership, see what they have to say on the matter.

Did you try running it past more than one tech and more than one garage?

This doesn't sound like it's a Skoda problem as much as a crap dealer problem.

Hate to break it to you....but apart from body panelling and 4 rings on the front grille, it's the same car.

Suggested the wheel alignment.. and maybe geometry.. nope it's your tyres. Never ever had this problem with my Audi... worth paying the bit extra !

Sorry to hear that - you are definitely not getting much luck. There are far more satisfied Skoda owners than there are Audi owners according to surveys so you need be careful what you wish for.

It does sound like you have had an alignment issue which has now manifested itself in uneven tyre wear. Lots of posts on this.

There was someone on here with a brand new Audi recently ....and he got told virtually the same thing by the Audi tech..

Lucky for you it's a company car. Think of the poor devils who paid hard cash. Report dealer to Skoda UK.

By the way a recent WhichCar mag (winter 2011) dared to give verdict on Octavia hatchback 59%, but they gave the Audi A3 76% and the A4 86%. Furthermore in new car data section they had the effrontery to say Octavia hatchback has so-so reliability. This flies in the face of JD Power 2012 survey. Who can you believe?

As someone who is currently switching from Volvo to Skoda, I'm amazed at the difference if the Content of the forums. The Volvo owners website is page after page of faults whereas here the faults are few and far between.

One thing I have learnt is that after collecting it I will be booking it in at Wheels in Motion in Chesham for a full alignment check. Better to spend £75 now than hundreds on tyres in a couple of years time.

A lot on this forum about uneven rear tyre wear.Sounds like rear wheel geometry to me, Octavia's that do a lot of miles tend to have this issue but can be resolved by having the geometry set. If you have done 16k on a set of tyres i think you have done pretty well. And as previously said Audis have a similar issue according to my mate who is a Audi tech, Beleive it or not he says they have more probs than Skodas.

Seriously mate I've never heard such an over reaction. You've experienced one poor (in your opinion) technician that couldn't diagnose a potential problem and suddenly the entire skoda brand is c***.

Uneven tyre wear happens across the VAG range

Had the same problem with mine , thought a wheel bearing was on its way out , did the align my car thing and its gone , tyres were wearing on the inside edges lot of VAG cars do it even Audi , and I would say my car has been the most reliable and well put together car I have had.

It is a pretty universal complaint, though - that the dealers are sub-standard, and that it's letting the brand down. Sure, if you're picking up a second-hand car, don't care about warranty or trust a local independent to keep things stamped, you have options. But if you're in the brand-new or company-car category and choose to drive a Skoda then you're pretty much tied to the dealer network - and it's not good.

Now, objectively, is it genuinely worse than the other brands, let alone the other VAG brands? That I'm not sure. I've wondered whether the price point for Skoda drives a certain behaviour (SUK recalls on ESP units and goodwill payments, for example, or reimbursement rates to dealers for warranty work, or even the amount of time/money dealers are prepared to spend). My worst experience has been at a joint Skoda-VW franchise, and I really can't imagine that there's anything much to choose between the bloke in the grey uniform and the one in green, with the same knowledge on tap and the same tools at their disposal. So it's not training or skill, and we all know it's not the engineering given the number of shared components.

I'll find out when my Passat arrives and it inevitably goes to a different dealer for some fault or other. And maybe a new Skoda franchise will open up closer to home in time for an Octy 3 some time in 2015...

They are for the most part mechanically identical across the entire range of VAG products. You'd mostly be paying for a "badge" and some nicer interior carpets, personally I just cannot work out why anyone would pay extra for that.

Agree it's just a badge but same group and a ton more money for the same thing :)

The only difference between the four brands is the place they are made, Skoda are still made in the Czech republic, Seat in Spain, VW and Audi in Germany. The other difference is the build time, Seat and Skoda get less time to make a car than VW, and Audi get even longer, thats why we get silly faults such as poor door alignment, wheel alignment, rattles etc...so really you do get what you pay for as an Octavia is cheaper to make than an Audi A4 even tho for the most part the same parts are used.

Not according to Warrany Direct, who report the Audi A3 (which the Octavia is based) being nearly twice as unreliable as the Octavia!

A3, A4 you get the jist and that all came from four UK directors I picked up in Newcastle.

Not even nicer carpets. Recently explored a brand new £40k A5 in a showroom (out of curiosity not intent to buy!) and it had same carpets as my vRS.

Four rings on the bonnet - four grand on the price!

A family member used to work for a large, well known Audi dealership in Sussex and trust me, you won't get any better service from the boys at "The Gin Palace" as the dealership in Brighton used to be called (for good reason!)

There is very little difference between vehicles made at Ingolstadt and those from Mlada Boleslav. They are essentially the same bar some nice red lighting, smarter styling and fancier trim inside. Have a look at the parts on your car - they say VW, AUDI, SEAT, SKODA and pretty much everything mechanical is interchangeable.

With all due respect perhaps you should try and put aside the badge snobbery and take the car to another dealer as many have suggested. This is a known problem throughout the VW/Audi group so there is every chance that your A4 would suffer from the same thing down the line anyway.
