Anti-roll bar

Featured Replies

I saw there are 2 types of anti-roll bars:

- type 1 mounted underneath linking left&right track control arms (shown in Haynes)

- type 2 mounted in engine bay linking top suspension struts

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each type?

One is the anti-roll bar (underneath). Essentially a bar (albeit shaped) that uses torsal strength to do it's best to hold the inner wheel to the ground during cornering. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-roll_bar

The other is a strut brace (strut to strut). Fixed bar to transfer energy from one side to the other. Also reduces bodyflex. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strut_brace

Almost all Fellys had front roll bars. Strut braces where hit and miss as to whether they were fitted. Usually they'd be fitted together so no real advantage/disadvantage against each other. When I fitted a strut brace to the Fun, the difference was reasonably noticable when cornering.

I think the pickups had thicker anti-rolls than the cars, and that the VWs had thicker than that.

thanks for clearing things. my Felicia has no anti-roll bar and if I hit a small bump while cornering, the car will 'lose' momentarily the steering and will have the tendency to 'jump' towards the exterior of the curve. a very unsettling feeling...

so I guess the priority is to fit an anti-roll bar for greatest effect on cornering stability.

only then I might think of further increasing the rigidity of front body by fitting a strut brace.

My 1.3 estate felly had a strut brace but no anti roll bar and my pick up (ex cube van) had a rollbar and no strut brace. I think it depended on what they had most of in the factory on that day!? Strut brace is now on the pick up.

Anti-roll retro-fit could be quite hard as you need the holes in the lower track arms, and to get the bar across the car (IIRC it has to go above the exhaust)

Strut brace takes 5 minutes, is 4 13mm nuts.

I think just the 1.9D and possibly the 1.6 came with an anti-roll bar as standard due to the heavier engines. The strut brace seemed a bit more hit and miss.

My 1.3 L&K had no anti-roll bar but did have a strut brace.

I think the strut brace was a bit of a sticking plaster to try and remedy the wibbly wobbly suspension :)

Phil

None of the 1.3s I've had (10, I think) have had front ARBs - the only one I've had that did was a 1.9D. Most of them had braces, but not all.

Strut Brace apparently made a difference to the wear on the top mounts (from what a dealer parts guy told me), certainly helps stiffen up the shell a bit under cornering which will never be a bad thing.

I am looking for maximum stability in cornering and although an anti-roll bar is harder to mount, I will go for that solution.

NOTE FOR FURTHER REPLIES

this topic is not a poll about what is mounted from factory.

those kind of observations don't help me at all. they are off-topic.

Someone needs to calm down!

my question was about ADVANTAGES and DISADVANTAGES of any of 2 solutions.

I didn't ask for a chit-chat on skoda parts stock at manufacturing time.

my car has no anti-roll bar. period.

why should I have to be blamed for telling people not to beat the bushes?

why don't blame people for not answering on-topic?

to me this forum has value when:

1) get answers FAST

2) get answers in DETAIL, maybe with photos attached

3) get RELEVANT answers

the rest is garbage.

Never really paid much attention but the Fun appears to have two bars underneath that, in each case, include a u shaped formation but don't I think interconnect. It's always had the top strut bar.

Well that's not very friendly is it !!!

only the 1.6 and 1.9 had anti roll bars but some did have bigger ones my car had no strut brace nor anti roll bar when it had its 1.3 in it

Get the anti-roll bar fitted first and then get a strut-brace. Having both is definately the way to go. They do different jobs and work well together.

that's what I said yesterday.

this is the confirmation I was waiting for.

this is not a pen pals or a matrimonial forum.

people come here in great need of advice.

fast, because their way of life, sometimes their income depend of their Felicia working.

I know how it's like you have to take your kids to school or kindergarten daily.

or to put some bread on the table by delivering merchandise with a pick-up.

this section lives due to a handful of passionate and experienced members that lately I try to be a part of.

(two of them helped me in this topic: djaychela and RainbowFore)

I would like to see how happy you are when you're desperate for an answer and get none or useless off-topic babbles.

sometimes we don't have to be afraid to speak more bluntly if that means being more effective.

if that hurts your ego... too bad. I don't like soap operas, stupid barking dogs, obama, 9/11 lies and fat women drivers.

now you can cry me a river.

Masster,

I see where you're coming from with wanting "direct answers", and if you paid for the privilage, you'd have a right to get up tight. However, Briskoda is a collection of people who have similar interests. Politeness and manners will stand you as far better allies than rudeness and bluntness. No-one here is paid for advice. No-one here is obliged to give you an answer. Sometimes you find the "off topic" banter yealds results that you wouldn't have thought of as well. It also helps grease the cogs of the forum......things work better when everyone gets along, both on and off-topic. Being blunt here won't make people help you, you'll find it has quite the opposite effect, which will only lead to more frustation on your part.

People like Daisy, whilst having (and I know this is something she has confessed on several occasions) very limited technical knowledge when it comes to cars (just mention Miltek exhausts to her and watch her eyes glaze over ;)), because she is sociable and provides much humour and input into the non-car side of things, should she ask for help, it would more readily be available.

People such as DJay (and Tom and Uma, and many others) have far more technical knowledge than many of us on here. I suspect if you demanded knowledge from any of them, it would be met with stoney, cold, silence.

If you so desperately *need* an answer, there are Skoda dealers throughout the world, including Romania, there are times it can take a while to get a "complete" answer on any forum.

Well... I was going to post another helpful suggestion about what could improve the handling... but I won't bloody bother now due to your rudeness!

As above... being friendly and having some manners costs nothing and is what makes this forum what it is...

Good day!

I see... so Lazy Daisy is not a man wearing shoes and tan pantyhose... my bad.

who wouldn't jump for a damsel in distress? ummm... me.

where I come from, if you ask "what time is it?" you expect to get the hour, not an essay on swiss watches.

on the other hand, who said something about getting paid?

see my posts and tell if I was get paid to help other people by posting many technical answers, tutorials, tables, LOTS of descriptive photos and videos on youtube. did I EVER beat the bushes to 'grease the cogs' of the forum? no, because I'm teached that if I don't have something useful to say, I keep my mouth shut.

as for not getting more answers... you make me laugh. that's a 'I won't play with you anymore and take home my toys too' 2yo kid attitude. I will survive even without bathing in your source of wisdom :)

meanwhile I will polish my British politeness and I will never say "oy! get me the f***ing 14 spanner!" but "please, if you don't mind saying that, would you be so kind to hand me that shiny tool over there? thank you from the bottom of my heart."

Firstly well said Rainbow, you have an implicit way of expressing truth and common sense. Secondly Brisky members in this case you really are wasting your breath and i'm sure valuable time in a lost expressive cause. In truth it's a moderator issue and would hope it's dealt with/handled accordingly!

on the other hand, who said something about getting paid?

No-one said anything about getting paid dear boy. I said that if you were paying for the advice service, you would have a right to get upset about what is posted. In reality you pay nothing to anyone on here for anything. So you're no more "special" than anyone else in that respect.

I said nothing about you getting no more answers. Your blunt and aggressive manner may find favour with one or two on here, but you won't make many friends with that manner.

thank you from the bottom of my heart

Well, that was a start ;) "please" and "thank you" go a long way, in any laguage.

There's no impetus for you to join in with the banter and chat on here, but by the same token, there's no need to be rude and aggressive when it occurs either. Briskoda's tag is "The Skoda Forum and Community". The community spirit is very much alive and well on here and will continue to be so. As I said before, it's a bunch of people with similar things in common. If you don't like the warm nature and the way it's run: the software is called vBulletin. You'll need that and somewhere to host it. Then you can run your own, tech and tech only, cold, forum. Failing that, no-one is forcing you to be here or impart your "wisdom" on us. (Or dig up three-year old threads and then deride positive comments that fail to co-incide with your own, exacting, narrow-tolerant views)

I've seen abrasive comments you've left on other threads and, personally, found them quite amusing..........but such is the bend on my sense of humour.

In truth it's a moderator issue and would hope it's dealt with/handled accordingly!

Hey Rob :), I haven't read the rules in-depth, but I suspect being rude and abrasive doesn't infringe any of them. I suspect, as with most things in life, it will deal with itself one way or another. ;) ;)

I am aware that the attitude of europeans sometimes differs from our own, and this could well be one of those times, possibly.

I suspect the next time Masster requests help from the forum will be the start of another rant............................when it goes unanswered. ;) ;)

now you're wasting my time with your useless rhetoric fueled by some xenophobic brown nose.

you failed seeing two OBVIOUS facts:

1) I censor MY OWN TOPIC

because

2) OFF TOPIC rule is alive and well

I didn't register to BRISKODA to hold hands, get married, flirt with women members or get a warm fuzzy feeling of friendship.

I came here to GET or to GIVE technical answers.

remember that I do this voluntarily, in a foreign language, that sometimes I was the only one who gave fast and relevant answers and that I don't make a big deal if I don't get any thank you.

you know why? because I don't chase daisies on car forums like you do.

so... my condescending infinite (unknown) age all wisdom royal blood oh majesty fellow member, why don't you come to a Romanian skoda forum and flex your Romanian language muscle?

you'd be shred apart in about 2 seconds.

by the way, I got all the answers for anti-roll bar and I thanked you after your post, but don't inflate yourself too much, you might burst and what would we do without your male sensitivity?

You've missed two obvious things:

1) I don't compell you to answer, you do so of your own free will. I don't waste your time: you do.

2) You censor nothing: you're not a moderator

I don't chase daisies (or Daisy which is what you were implying) on car forums. But given your cold, hard, Romanian attitude, you wouldn't understand what banter is and how much mileage there is in being friendly towards people. Granted you're oviously not here to hold hands, flirt, or get married (not that anyone other than yourself has mentioned such), but that "warm fuzzy feeling of friendship" will be worth 1000000 times what you're feeling now. Try it, you never know, you might like it. ;)

I'll make sure the very first thing I learn, should I ever chose to take up Romanian, is how to be very rude and arrogant and to disrespect everyone I'd speak to. However, I suspect that most Romanians would not be overly receptive of such an attitude. Mind you, if you've had to resort to coming to Briskoda (not re-knowned for being Romanian, either in location or language) it would appear that the Romanian forums, whilst being cold and hard, also don't supply any of the information you require........so I'd have no need to join such a "mighty" repositry of knowledge.

With a name such as "Masster", I take it you have a very selective defiition of the word condescending too.

If you feel that this is wasting your time, you:

1) won't have read beyond the first prargraph

and, more importantly

2) won't be "wasting your time" in replying, will you............

you looooooooove having the last word, don't you?

got used to shut up in front of your wife? so you come here to vent a little?

go on, chase rainbows, knock yourself out. no problem.

you are so off-topic that your middle name should be "troll".

meanwhile I'll go mounting a more useful anti-roll bar.

PS

the desperate analysis you made on my nick only proves that my English is a million times better than your Romanian.

did it ever occur to you that my nick has a meaning in Romanian? or you're one of those thinking that if your ancestors went luting other countries then everything should revolve around English language or culture?
