I had a corrida red fabia vrs PD130 a few years ago and i really wish i could have it back. Iswapped it for a honda civic type r and whilst the civic was quick, i really dont like having to rev the baws off an engine to try and keep up with a clio. So i swapped the civic for a seat ibiza 1.8T fr, thinking" back to VAG," and whilst it was nicer to drive than the civic and better on the fuel. It just wasnt my fabia that i used to have.

I am thinking of a change of car before the winter sets in ( after the summer comes) and i have been thinking of a race blue or black octavia vrs in petrol or diesel form or a limited edition fabia vrs PD130. Ive heard horror stories about the turbos, injectors and fuel pumps going on PD170s and i think the limited edition fabias are not as up to date technology as the PD170s. So im after adice on what to get and the pros and cons of the options

We have a mk1 Fabia VRS and I now have an Octavia VRS PD170. The latter feels like a grown up Fabia, better built, much roomier and handles better.

If you don't do the miles, I'd definately consider a petrol one though.

New diesels have been spoilt by all the emission crap they fit to them like dpf's and egr's. This WILL lead to expensive repairs or replacement at some stage which could wipe out the fuel savings you make over a petrol.

Unless you're really hitting big miles petrol seems the way to go.

Trade doesn't seem to want them so you could get a bargain.

DPF's are not difficult to remove though. Over the life of a car, the savings running diesel are not small and residuals are most likely to be higher when you come to sell. Plus depending on your style of driving you may even prefer diesel, you can also drive a diesel hard and it will not punish you at the pumps in a way that a petrol engine will.

Have coilpack issues been sorted on the 2.0L petrol engines? Mate used to carry around a spare pair as he had so many problems with them failing on his 1.8t?

Modern VAG 4 cylinder petrol engines are very competent but hardly a petrol heads wet dream, they're actually a bit characterless if you ask me.

Haven't heard of many problems on the TFSI.

Certainly an element of truth there. The engine is very competent, powerful, economical for what it is but I wouldn't describe it as a 'special'.

I had a 1.8t in my Elise - 262bhp/279lb at Emerald. Hugely impressive engine woth next to no turbo lag, but in terms of aural excitement it was a country mile short of the supercharged Honda K20a I replaced it with.

Clearly petrol does have its benefits, but for a daily driver, the diesel argument was compelling for me.

This is true I have a petrol tfsi vrs and is a good allround car but has no character at all. I am thinking Swift sport or Twingo 133 next or getting

a yaris t sport again!

But out of the choices you have put I would have a petrol vrs

Any idea what the problem was as I know one person had issues with fuel going the wrong way after the dealer ballsed up injector replacement?

yeah, problems with the injectors in both cases...

and VAG engines have no character? have you driven the twincharged engine in the fabis? its incredible! oodles of character.. lots of low down torque with the mad supercharger wine, to be replaced with an incredible wail as it bounces of 7,000 revs! lovely engine....

on a side note, when i drove an octy vRS, (FSI) in comparison, the engine feels flat, and characterless until you hit 5k.....

I had a celica t sport 190 before my fab vrs and i do not miss having to rev it to 8.5k to get her to go. Thought id hate a derv..... but i love it!!

I knew a Toyota salesman with a Celica, he wasn't keen on it for the very same reasons. Not great to drive unless you were revving the tits off it constantly.

I had a 1.8 T octy first and just upgraded to the 2.0T facelift. Petrol all the way I say, drove the diesel and yeah it's got some poke but just didn't have that mental take off that i like from the petrol. I don't agree with the comment about the engine being "character less" I do find the gearing quite a bit different but that 3rd gear on the petrol goes and goes and goes and goes and goes!!!!

PD170 is a great engine but with DPF bolted on these 2 don't go together. Better on a CR.

tfsi for me all the way,I do agree its feels flat below 5k when standard but if you get a remap it really,really does come to life and pulls a lot harder from just over 2k,transforms what felt like a bit of a boring 197 bhp car to me,into what it should of left the factory like in the first place,fun to drive.
