Spray on rear window.

Recommended Posts

Maybe because of the shape of the back of my Roomster lots of spray from wet roads get lifted up onto the back window.

Is there a fitting available that will change the airflow so that this will not happen?

A very long spoiler might help, but would look silly.

The shape of the car causes it.

It's the sudden drop at the back that causes low pressure right behind the car, so dirt gets sucked up and stuck to the rear.

I think all hatches suffers from rear spray. Both my previous PUG 106 and Fabia MK1 did. My brother's Ibiza MY 05 and my current Roomster does so. In my honest opinion that's why all hatches have a rear wiper.

Mudflaps won't do anything -it's vortexing behind the car as others have said. My previous car suffered terribly from this and I went to the expense of getting mudflaps fitted - a complete waste of money, they made no difference at all.

I have no frame of reference as I haven't driven a regular Fabia on a long term basis but my Greenline II with the big anti-drag spoiler isn't that bad, I'd be interested to do a compare and contrast, does anyone have experience of both?

But a Fabia has a sloping rear hatch.

But a Fabia has a sloping rear hatch.

Granted it's not as upright as a Roomster but it's still a hatch -I was referring to OP's comment about changing the airflow in the original post. My old Volvo C30 was much more dramatically sloped than my Fabia but was horrendous for sucking spray on to the rear glass.

The first URL does show as expected the turbulent/back-flow of air at the rear of a car that "sucks" up the road spray.

I friend of mine has a Prius and it has a "wing" as part of the boot lid.

The rear below the wing gets wet and dirty with road spray whereas the window above the wing stays clear. This may of course partly to do with the slope of the window.

Perhaps a wing fitted at the bottom of the rear window of a Roomster would reduce the spray on the window.

I have another friend who is a qualified expert of fluid dynamics and I'll ask his advice.

I see some here mention mud-flaps, I am thinking of fitting some are they worth it? I guess this has been discussed many times how ever I am new so be kind.I understand the benefit however do you feel they could mark the paintwork with contours on the paintwork comments please from those with fitted, are the easy to fit not to handy myself Thanks

I have a yaris and a fabia, both with rear mud flaps, the yaris also has a spoiler. It makes a small difference but it is a difference! For the fairly small price of a set of mud flaps, it is worth it. They are very simple to fit, I recon your dealer would even bung them on free if you purchased them from him and had them fitted during a service, they are that simple.

The spoiler starts to cost silly money, for what it is but if you really think of it a styling item (It will actually make the handling worse on a front wheel drive vehicle, if more than just a small styling accessory) Then get one for looks but expect the "Problem" To persist!

I would get the Greenline spoiler but for the cost. If I see a used black magic one up for sale, at reasonable cost, its mine!

Unfortunately http://www.accessori...?p_no=KEA710001 shows that rear mudflaps are not suitable for my Roomster Scout.

http://www.scribd.co...-CGS-Gunasekara may indicate that the spray comes up the flat back of my Roomster.

So maybe a spoiler projecting out of the back at just below the window line would help.
