Young driver insurance

Featured Replies

Hi all insurance is up this month and as I'm only 20 with 2 years no claims my renewal is still pretty hefty at £1555.00 I seen a thread a few month back with a young lad saying he used a company who were really cheap does anybody know the company or know of any good companys I have a Fabia vrs if it helps thanks in advance

On the source of cheap companies, I can't help,as I'm getting to the stage that age is about to raise my premiums. HOWEVER, can I pass on some advice from years of experience.

1) NEVER accept the renewal quote from your insurance company, without going on line. On a renewal ,remember the nationwide ad of a year or so ago "Brand new customers only" .It still applies. On line ,as a new customer, you'll find that your present company will give you discounts as a new customer. If better, get an online reference and phone the company to ask why you haven't been given these .

2) Have you got some old relative that has a licence ( someone around 60-65 ,with a clean licence, and decent claims record). Get them on your policy. My daughter ( approx 30, with 8 years licence and a few years NCB) ,got a quote for herself, then ( on my advice) got another one- even if I never drive her car , she saves £100-200 .

3) Do you need all the frills. Thebrokers stick them on ,as they make commission on them .

4) Can you accept a higher excess.

I'm not an expert in insurance, jus a motorist with a hefty suspicion of the insurance industry when it comes to renewals. As said, perhaps when brokers start to treat returning customers as people to reward, then we might get decent service. Till then ,I'm a "brand new customer" ,but with 45 year old ,clean licence, and 9+ years NCB( and if they'd come clean and stop the cuttoff point at 9years, then mine would be a lot more , something else designed IMHO to swing things in their favour) .

I appreciate your frustration . We've all been there ,had the quotes and ( at times been stuffed) .

Adding a parent certainly seems to get prices down but make sure you mention any points they have etc or it may invalidate the insurance.

Mileage also changes the price a fair bit so don't put more mileage than you need.

Comprehensive seems to be not much more expensive than 3rd party!

I used confused.com and it seems to work fairly well. Pretty easy to go back and change things and see how it changes the price.

Hi mate,

I'm 19 with 2 years no claims.

Apprentice

20,000 Miles per year

Mum and dad on insurance, both with 15+ years driving.

Mufflerectomy mod which has been declared.

Fully comp £1100

With a 2006 on a 55 plate fabia vrs

In regards to a cheap insurer, Quinn direct are stupidly cheap, but mates of mine stupid enough to act like fools and end up crashing have had problems with them paying money out to either party.

I went on go compare and axa was best for me I went from third party fire and theft and with parents on for £1555.00 to fully comp by myself for 1263.00

Fully comp is often worse than TPFT. You have to consider if you would ever claim on a comprehensive policy (and how much this would increase your insurance comparative to the value of your car), and the increased excess.

In regards to Elephant, IIRC they're the same company as Admiral. They used to be the best for me in Leeds. I moved to South Wales and got a nice chunky refund for the reduced premium. Ever since Ecarinsurance is the cheapest, and Admiral can't even get close. My insurance has gone down from over £600 to near £200, just by moving. Admiral said they could speak to their manager to offer me a reduced price when I called to cancel renewal. I asked if they'd get anywhere near the ecar price, they said no, customer lost. Plus I get protected no claims which I wouldn't with Admiral.

Car insurance varies so much on the person, where you live, the job you have etc etc.

Mine was actually £500 cheaper when I went fully comp. Try go compare and look out for insurance company schemes.

Flux Direct are pretty good as they have a number of new and scheme brokers that you can't get on the compare sites, they did a hot hatch scheme on my V6 4motion Golf. £1400. Brought a VRS SE, £850 for the year... Same company.

22 years old, 2 years no claims. Coming up to my third soon :) My parents made my insurance more expense even though they have over 12 years exp, and 12 years no claims...

Insurance is generally just ridiculous, I did a quote a while back with all my details exactly how they should be. I then changed my name to Dave and the price went up ?!?!

Personally I think the best way is the good old telephone.

Yeah I'm having a good shop about I'd love to know who controls the provisions surrounding insurance it's pathetic yes younger drivers can be dangerous but can't everyone? But it is what it is so hopefully I can get a few more lower quotes

Just got my renewal for £672 by phoning up admiral, their original renewal quote was £848! My first year with the car was 970 so I wasn't accepting that renewal so i rang them up and I'm now saving £300 this year compared to last!

23 yo male

Held licence over 5 years

1 year no claims (always been a named driver until I got my vrs)

07 VRS no mods

I then changed my name to Dave and the price went up ?!?!

You could be on to something here. Maybe someone should try some "chav" names and see if they get charged more for insurance, lol.

Personally I think the best way is the good old telephone.

Problem is you can only check one company with one phone call. A quote on Confused.com etc can check hundreds. I suspect many people spend too much on insurance *thinking* they're getting a good deal, because their insurance company knocked a few hundred quid off - when they could probably still get it a few hundred more cheaper elsewhere.

Try bell insurance. I was 18 when i got my vrs (19 now) and they were the cheapest by atleast £1000

I always found Elephant to be cheapest until this year, although I never modded my cars I did have a Volvo T5 a year and a bit after passing (about a year after 2 fault claims including 1 total writeoff).

My VRS is about £100 cheaper to insure than my old 80bhp Mk1 Ford Focus TDDI "tractor", with direct line. With my previous insurer (churchhill iirc) it was £200 more expensive - so I had to swap part way through a policy - gah!

Late 20s, Male, 6 yrs no claims, 3points for speeding. Direct line fully comp with protected no claims, hire car, business class, 8k miles/yr £340/yr.
