aye - the foaming stuff. You should see what it does to the carbons on the inside of your oven, so the carbons sticking to your turbo vanes (and the turbo in general I guess) won't stand a chance.

  • haha probably, but i find that little bit longer just gives the peace of mind. Done it with a4's passats and octys and fabias. So many in fact i have got elbows that fit on top o the can without the n

Anyone near Birmingham able to show me how to do this ?

Or upload a picturial using a fabia?

Ok - so here we go!

Started this morning at 8.30.

IMG_0802.jpg

First You'll need a length of silicon hose, a piece of copper wire, the above miracle cure for the sticky vanes on the VNT, a few flat head screw drivers, a pipe wrench, a 5mm allen key & a 6mm allen key.

I first removed the engine cover and the left side boost pipes.

IMG_0803.jpg

I removed the EGR valve, 3 x 5mm on the EGR mount and 2 x 6mm going from the egr pipe (I also removed the pipe from the MAF uptowards the turbo air inlet for easier access). Leaving it looking like this

IMG_0804.jpg

While the EGR was off I thought a good clean was due too - so used half a clothes peg along with an old toothbrush & some petrol. And its as shiney as a new penny.

Anyway back to the Mr Muscle -

Spray the copper wire with some wd40 and then slide the silicon pipe over it

IMG_0806.jpg

Once you have pushed the silicone pipe down the end of the EGR pipe it ends up looking like this (it took almost 25 minutes to get it all the way down into the turbo itself!)

It looked something like this:-

IMG_0808.jpg

I then put the can of mr muscle on the end of the silicon - yes the wire was still inside the hose to keep it in shape

IMG_0809.jpg

I must have sprayed in about 1/4 - 1/2 the can - the chances are some of it must have gone down into the exhaust but not all of it. I started then cleaning the EGR - which took about an hour - then put everything back together and took it for a blast. So far its behaving = plus the boost comes in nicely - the control arm for the Vanes moves easier - accelerates hard in 3rd & 4th. Hope fully thats it fixed!

And here are some pice of the car from earlier too!

nice car, glad it worked. One wee point of caution, normally you would have to take egr pipe off and put it direct to mannifould and into turbo, as you were at great risk of it hitting the pots which are ally and would have been destroyed, it only takes one or two scooshes to fill the turbo until it comes out of the mannifould egr pipe hole. You struck lucky, and im so glad for you it worked, it could have been disasterous.

Please all else who try this remove the egr pipe to exhaust completely that way it takes 10 secs to feed to turbo, plus the copper wire - if it had made contact could have buggered the turbo too.

SOto be clear EGR PIPE MUST COME OFF!!!!! ONLY SILICONE PIPE MUST GO INTO TURBO!!!!!!

Dont mean to be negative about your efforts but it could have been alot safer/easier, and you may not have reached the turbo effectively, if you read the wee link again itll clarify this

if done right on top of turbo without egr pipe its much easier to know its gone the right way. Well done though and apart from that good tutorial

Cheers for the tip. The first time I tried feeding it down I didnt get the hose very far. but the wire was fully inside the hose and not projecting out of the hose - just to keep it bent into shape. I couldnt get my egr pipe off. The other end on the turbo, is solid! I tried wd40 for ages and leaving it to penetrate - but by 2pm (remember I'd been there since 8.30) I was needing tha car put back together

What are the pots? What damage could have been done? have I broken something else now too??

pots are cylinders, nothing damaged as car runs fine, your good to go. Just was a risky method. Relax dude - job done

Andy, is this the first time your Fabia's went into limp home mode? Mines has done it before but I just switched the car off for a minute then started it up and normal service was resumed. Oven cleaner in a turbo just sounds like an accident waiting to happen, if it aint broke don't fix it.

i suspect when under load it will happen again mate, its very common, and the mr muscle method is tried and tested for many years on many many cars. If it does id be happy to help do it if you are so inclined as i am so close

Cheers Lofty but when I fitted my de-cat a couple of months ago I had a good look in the turbo and all's well, been a mechanic 22 years

Ah i see, for the most part, people i know are usually not mechanical of mind, and need all the help they can get. Thats now 7 cars have had the mr muscle treatment from me - the newest with the limp mode symptoms was my uncles 2.0 pd tdi 140 2008 passat - what a difference to his.

Im pretty good mechanically, done solid clutch etc etc, but may send a pm if im totally screwed with something

Mine has just done this I think. Mid over take and lost turbo power, but there was a whining noise before which has made me think just a pipe has come lose at some point in the system?

possibly, but only one way to find out. I beleive the bottom hose to the intercooler pops off on these. Some have used self tappers to hold em aswell as jubilees

If a pipe has popped of you will know about it!

The engine will run rough, smoke will pour out the back and there will be very loud whoosy noises.

The main ones to pop off are top and bottom of the intecooler due to the movement of the engine.

Phil

the whining noise beforehand concerns me though.

Ah yes.

Was it a loud siren kind of sound?

Do you get no turbo at all now?

Check the pipes first and if they are all escure then you need to investigate further.

Well Ali from unit18 has been emailed, and he said when he drove it he believed it to be the turbo bearing failing.

Now it seems its failed...

The car runs fine, no smoke etc but just no turbo at all (feels so weird to drive)

The whining noise is a weird one, as before I could hear a slight whine when I took my foot off accelerator (which is why I asked Ali to drive it and he says he thought it was the bearing) but driving back from Bath today and the whining got a lot louder about 150 miles in to the trip, and then 10 miles later when overtaking I lost the turbo...

Have just again had a little drive and there is definitely turbo back again...Not sure what the problem may be :(

Mr muscle Mr muscle Mr muscle

Would anyone in the Suffolk area, more particular Newmarket like to help me with this?

wish i was closer its definitely worth a shot. bump on helping him in suffolk area

Thanks Carl, appreciate the help!

Just taken on a very small drive, the turbo seems to be working but theres a louder whining sort of noise under load...
