Fan Jets...

Featured Replies

Can they be adjusted, the one on the drivers side almost washes the back of the drivers side wing mirror.

+1, my dealer adjusted mine for me when it was in for service last week.

The rear is a different kettle of fish though, you have to lift the black plastic cover off before you can adjust it. You get is adjusted perfectly, flip down the cover and realise that the jet of water now doesn't pass through the holes in the cover. I gave up in the end. The dealers efforts weren't all that much better either. Poor design.

Andy, yes the jets can be altered. Simply move the nozzle part of the jet to where you want it, it simply slides vertically on the nozzle housing. There is no horizontal adjustment.

Cheers Mike, I'll pop out later and sort it, after Murray stays a Scot and doesn't become " British "

Im confused it cant be moved horizontally but to adjust the spray from left and right you need slide it vertically?

Horizontal = side to side Vertical = up and down

These things become useless if you live in a hard water area and use tap water in the screenwasher - the jets scale up and don't spray properly

The fix is always to use rain water in the reservoir - on my Superb the jets failed after 6 months of ownership and were working properly again after another 6 months' use of rainwater.

They're a crappy idea - you can't see properly when the washer motor is on. 4 fine jets are far better. I suspect they were designed to reduce "aiming" time in the factory.

I use the Distilled water out of the collection bottle from the Condensing Dryer in the garage.

The jets come out in a fan shape hence the name -the further from the glass, the more spread of the fan -so the wider the spray left to right.

You must use a screen-wash specifically designed for fan jets as a lot 'normal' solutions will cause clogging

I live in very hard water area (North Surrey) and always used distillied water from Halfords and VW screen wash.

Rainwater is free. I'll be damned if I'm buying stuff from VAG to put in a screenwasher - water works fine if the blades are good.

Rainwater contains bacteria, sand, dirt..all sorts.

My car gets a hell of a lot on it when it rains.

The big problem is that if you use water without screen wash (tap or rain) means that it's an ideal breeding ground for bacteria especially when it's sitting in there for months on end and getting nice and warm from the engine - the BBC report is saying that it could account for 20% of new cases of legionnaires disease directly from washer jets. I believe that older types of screen wash tend to crystallise in the nozzles, blocking them. I'm sure that their is a cheaper suitable alternative to the VW stuff.

On a slight tangent, I paid for my service plan in advance and rather than top up my screen wash (I send it in full) they leave a bottle in the boot, between that and the bottle they gave me when I bought the car I have not had to buy any.

Thanks to all

I hate it with a vengeance when someone has them sett wrong and spray my perfectly clean car . Cant believe you asked for advice Andy, pretty straightforward

Skoda screen wash is £4.10 for a litre. Diluted it makes it £4.10 for 5 litres.

Halfords sell ready mixed screen wash for £4.49 for 5 litres which, in my book, makes the dealer bought stuff good value.

Note, I compare the VW stuff with the premium Halfords stuff as its antifreeze content is comparable.

I was under the assumption that they couldn't be adjusted. I thought you had to replace the Jets but obviously not as I've adjusted them

Some dealers sell it cheaper than that too. Royce Roberts in Hull were charging £3 a bottle recently, cheaper than many ebay sellers!

Exactly - and at that price the vAG stuff must have gone up (or is more expensive at skoda perhaps). I used to pick three bottles up at a time from my local VW dealer for about a tenner, making it cheaper than the cheap crap which salts up your fan jets......

if you want screenwash then this is what you need for summer

Winter i use Holts from Costco never had a problem.

The Einzett stuff is quite hard to find in shops but it is relabelled by BMW and sold in most dealerships for a fiver a bottle.

The Lidl concentrate liquid is ~£5 for 5 litres and is suitable for fan jets. And can be diluted- so much cheaper than the Skoda stuff.

I took my Octavia to the main dealer yesterday thinking the pipe had popped off the rear- but no- it had simply kinked. Straightened out and re-aimed and working better than ever. £27 fix.

Never managed to get teh Lidl stuff it's such a good deal.

I've been sticking with the VAG stuff. I think it's good value compared to the Halfords stuff, and no crusty bits like Tesco's leaves.

I'm in a very soft water area, so limescale isn't an issue.

its not trust me, i've compared both, bmw stuff is actually Sonax
