Clearance behind / removing A pillar trim on drivers side

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Does anyone know how much clearance there is behind the A pillar trim on the drivers side? I'm wanting to cut a small hole in mine and mount a usb socket into it (A bit like this).

Second question is how do you actually remove the trim? Is it a case of pulling from the top? I've tried but I didn't want to break anything.

Cheers

Iain

I seriously doubt there'd be enough clearance for one of those.

It's a case of just pulling from the top yes, I think you might need to pull the door seal off first, if it goes over the edge of it.

A better location might be the switch blanks in centre of dash above stereo.

What is your ultimate aim? A power outlet for a sat nav?

Power for the SatNav/iPhone.

I saw somewhere on the site someone had modified the small airvent on the drivers side (the one that isn't adjustable) to accommodate a USB power socket. I was hoping to make it as neat as possible on the right hand side as it's a perfect place for satnav/phone.

I've got some taps for the fuses to take off power without cutting into OEM wiring, hence the other reason on the right would be perfect.

I wonder if there's something like a small box that I could mount to the pillar trim where it meets the dash that could then have the usb socket mounted in.

Unfortunately, although I have this idea I have almost zero DIY skills. :D

Cheers

Easiest option, without involving any cutting, would be to have the USB plug from a cig lighter adapter, dangling out from between the dash and A pillar trim. The only downside I can think of is if the plug hits the dash when not in use. A possible workaround is some velcro on the dash, and a velcro ties around the end of the cable.

You would need to have it wired up to a switched live, otherwise it will drain power when car is not in use.

Yeah might do that, at least until I get something else sorted. Bit of bluetack should how it. :D

I've got it on the radio etc fuse port (the tap has separate fuses for the existing circuit and the new circuit), it's already running my dash cam so it's just a case of running the usb port.

Thanks

Looking into it - I'm going to use Sugru Putty to make a "mount" for the female usb port in the corner between the dash and the A pillar. That way I can swap between the iPhone and TomTom charging cables.
