Columbus RDS Text problem?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Not sure if this is the correct place, but.... I have a new Octavia Scout with factory fitted Columbus system (delivered end May this year).

According to several other forums and internet searches, the radio should also display the additional station text (program, song title etc). In 2 months I have seen this pop up just once on the display and then disappear. Interestingly the Amundsen system has an i (info) button top right which turns this function on oir off, and the button has been replaced on the Columbus by a voice command button.

Is RDS text really supported or is it rather a hit and miss affair?

Apart from this, the Columbus does everything it should, and using software called PoInspector I have been able to upload personal waypoints as well.

Any pointers welcomed!

Thanks.

Mine doesn't - I've tried.

I did think it a bit odd that the Stream MP3 displayed basic station text (no song or track info) and the Columbus didn't.

It does sound like a feature of the digital stations as opposed to the analogue ones. But I'm only guessing.

Maybe the manual you are reading covers the DAB 'units' available on new Superbs as well. Again, just a guess.

I think it is only the very latest RNS-510 units that RDS text is supported. I didn't think it was supported on the Skoda version of the RNS-510, the Columbus yet.

Shame, as the Bolero has supported it for some time.

Never seen it on the two Columbus units I have had in Skoda's, saw it a few times on the unit I had in my Fabia vRS.

Thanks for responses.

As mentioned, I did see on a single occassion the program name and several song titles on the screen and that was it! (Radio 2 I think)

The option must somehow be lurking in there, but it would be nice to know for sure. Perhaps a new firmware is being ported from the latest VW units to Skoda?

Thanks.

I have the very latest firmware on my Columbus and no RDS Text. It is both hardware and firmware dependent. I have older hardware that doesn't support RDS Text, so it doesn't matter what firmware I put on there, it won't work. The firmware is the same between RNS-510 and Columbus.

Thanks Freedom,

Maybe I should take this up with the dealer as the car was new just a couple of months ago? That would imply latest hardware and firmware...... but it would be great to know if others have this working!

It's andyvee, you read the wrong bit :-)

Ask the dealer as I may be wrong but I thought it was the very latest RNS-510 fitted to VW models that supported RDS Text. The hardware version of the latest Columbus I have seen screenshots of is a fair way behind the current RNS-510.

If the manual for the Columbus that came with the car says it displays the text then take it up with the dealer. The manual dated 11-2011 on the rear makes no mention of it.

I'd have to question the wisdom of wanting to read the information on any head-unit display whilst you're supposed to be looking at the road.

IIRC if you have the bluetooth kit and Maxi-dot, you can read and reply to texts on the Maxi-dot display - another stupid idea.

That'll be my 2p done. ;)

It was quite a nice feature on the Bolero - when listening to the radio you would get RDS text showing the song that was playing, no different to playing back MP3's really.
