Gentlemen, I have a quandary...

Right, thinking about selling my car...

I've always been one to swap cars, I get bored. When I sold my last Mk1 vRS I regretted it, but needs must, I needed the cash at the time. It was the best all-round car I'd had. So when the opportunity arose and I got my current one I was very happy! Had loads of plans for it.

Lately I've just been thinking though, do I really want the car? I did want to remap, wheels etc but I just don't know whether it's worth it.

The way I see it, I've got three options:

1 - Sell the car now, buy something interesting and cheap (been looking at Mk2 Golf GTIs and Mk1 Toyota MR2's thanks to Retro Rides :giggle:). This would mean I'd probably lose money on the car to get it sold quickly. Save up for something else.

2 - Go down the planned modification route.

3 - Keep the car, get it minty mint (it's not far off to be honest), save up for a new car, sell/part-ex Octavia then.

My main problem is between 2 and 3 - I think "Oh, £300 for a remap, £600 for some coilovers, £500-1000 on some wheels, £500 on an exhaust, few hundred on an intake, some interior bits, new headunit..." but then think that there's like £3000 to go towards a new car right there!

I'll be dead set on going for option 3, then spot some wheels that would look ace, and start thinking about modding again

Opinions guys?

Sell it. Buy a Fabia. That is all.

:giggle:

Only you can choose if sinking money into a car to tweak it is sensible and viable, knowing it's money you'll never get back.

If so, crack on. :)

If not, sell now before you start! :D

to be honest i would stick cos youll buy something else and the modding bug will get you again so that 3k mod list will just be attached to another car so not only have you lost money, spent more and got another car - square one looms over you.

Better the devil you know, if yours is fine, you may buy something and it spontaneously combust

+1 Mk 1 disiesel's are good

Keep it and continue with your plans. Golf Mk2 ain't special everyone knows about them and are really common etc, Mr2 can you live with 2 seats and no luggage space, its a jap and it'll cost loads to soup up if you can find the parts, would rather get a mx5 myself as to me they look better lol

Octy is still different, body don't rust, space for all the family and will prob out last you if you take care of it lol

Reason I brought the Octy is that I hate getting rid of cars and I know it'll serve my needs for years to come

The grass is Deifinately greener!

Depends what you want/need from a car? Although there a good car, there not special and there becoming more and more common, because there so cheap I suspect. If you think you'll regret it then don't do it, maybe just do a couple of bits from your list and then decide that way you won't lose so much money on it if you do decide to sell.

Out of the 2 choices of car I'd go mk2 golf Deifinately. You don't see many about, they hold there value and are ripe for a vr6 lump :)

Our lass wants another one as a family hack for her to pootle round in. I wouldn't go back to fwd drive now unless it was something special. Getting out of the vrs and into the Volvo was a world apart comfort wise but the grin factor made up for it Deifinately, made me realise what i'd been missing and I started to enjoy driving again, it was so much more fun and more of a drivers car.

Probably not much help but I'm old school at heart and biased :)

Ps rwd rules end of.

option 3 - kind of sounds (no offence) like your heart is not really into the modding so keeping it oem+/minty mint is my advice. Anything which is worn out / shot should be able to be replaced relatively inexpensively as more of these cars end up in breakers yards etc. Its how I'm finding parts for my porsche. :D

I say mod the Octy (i'm biased). save £3k on mods and buy a new car?? then you'll have less reddies available to mod the new car (c'mon... you KNOW you WILL mod it). Hell, i liked my Octy so much... i bought another one

It is really only you that can make that decision. Mind you if it helps if you are like me that have sunk truck loads of dosh into neally every car i have owned of which i kept saying to SHMBO that i will never do that again and next car will leave std forget it, it won't happen. So you sink maybe more money you have in a new car just to make it how you want it. I don't think i will ever be happy with any car I own leaving it std.

So even though the VRS has faults(not many) is getting a little dated I still love mine and coming from last car being a scooby i think the VRS still ticks more boxes for me.

i say mod it.. but its ultimately your choice (and wallet)

Option 3 :)

Keep it standard like me

Save your money towards that M3 or M5

vRStroy got it spot on i think.

If your hearts not in nodding the octy then sounds like you could be going of the scene otherwise you wouldnt think twice.

Save the money and put it towards a car that you dont need to mod!

You seen, this is a valid point - there are some proper cars out there for not a massive amount (E39 M5, B5 RS4 for example) as well as a lot newer cars. There's also a possible house move in the background of all this (oh, and a wedding ) but financially that's covered, it's just getting this one sold and finding a new one.

The Octavia is reasonably quick, handles reasonably well (mine could do with some new bushes at front, got my eye on that new kit from PSI with the R32 bushes though), looks good, is comfortable, spacious and practical. It doesn't excite me though. I don't need the room that the Octavia gives either. In fact, I've only once ever had a rear passenger!

Maybe I just need two cars? :wall:

Maybe I just need two cars? :wall:

That's the correct answer

I bet cost wise, you could buy a 2nd car with the performance you want, and run it for less than it'd cost to mod your car to that level of performance.

To be honest, it's not the outright performance or whatever, I just want something exciting that I can tinker with (ooh-er!).

My Golf VR6 was brilliant for this, but was just too stiff for an every day car...

Cheap RWD (E30?) and then a fabia TDi vrs thingymabob for the every day?

IMO, if you like to change your cars frequently then don't mod as you will do better putting the modding money into a seperate pot to cover costs to change (depreciation/tax/mots/repairs etc).

I like to change cars every 12-18months (although coming upto 2 1/2 years with this octavia) and I would much prefer an older car which could do with a bit of money spending on it to get it mint as that would solve my eurge to tinker yet not modify.

Cheap RWD (E30?)

E30's cheap.......you must be joking. Since drifting's kick off they've rocketed price wise.

Nice mk2 valver or vr6'd one if your looking to keep the vrs aswell, although your vr6 was nice (always fancied one myself).

get an mx5 for fun, dirt cheap spares etc and can be kept for the sunny days - 2k will get something very nice

Keep the Octy. If you sell it and get a different car you'll only end up losing more money in the end.

Try and keep it as standard as possible to keep the part exchange or selling route always open. Annoyingly the more money you spend modding your car, the less it's worth. You can get away with some mods (like mine) and not affect the car visually.

If you want something to modify and keep you busy, but also want it's value to increase with time, then buy a house!

Even classic cars are a money pit. You just never get back what you put into a car. They are all ball/heart breakers!

I'm fighting with the idea of buying a 4x4 again, as I miss the mud plugging fun. I know I'd miss the performance of the Octy, but a nagging wife, speeding tickets and fuel prices are already crushing my ability to go fast and enjoy myself. I just keep telling myself that having a 150+ mph speed capability could one day save my life if aliens invade etc.

We all just want the perfect car, but it'll never exist.

4x4's are cool, lots of fun and you can tinker and the excitement and adrenalines there.

In fact a mate sent me this, this morning :)

When I saw it fri it was complete, saturday it was chopped, today it's even shorter with more coming off the front so it stands on its nose lol.

I know you can pick the car up for around £1000 looking on retro rides and the like. Probably not a minter...I wont lie though I have no idea what spares cost! Probably an arm and a leg as they are BMWs.

Perhaps a overhaul on the VRS? New bushings, major service etc etc so its all nice?
