Audi 3.0TDI Experience

Featured Replies

Does anyone have much experience of this engine?

In A4 form would be useful to know....

Had a shot of the A4 Quattro 3.0 Tdi & found it to be one of the nicest cars I've drove, plenty power, handled pretty well.

That's what I'm thinking about... 245ps, 0-60 in 6s, 4WD, 360lb/ft torque (and still return decent MPG) - can get a "sensible" used one for £18K (20-30K on the clock, 08-09 plates)

Pity they don't put that engine in a Superb............

I assume that is the newer generation engine with that power output.

My other half's uncle has had them in his Touareg. He had an older one that was pants and had nothings but problems with. Think they had some major engine problems at one point that needed a couple thousand euros spending on it.

The new one, as far as I know, has been flawless and not missed a beat. Great pull from the engine and surprisingly quick for such a big car.

What gearbox does the Audi have in it as I know the new Touareg has an 8 speed auto box in.

Same here. My driving was on ice and snow, but one of the nicest cars I've driven.

When did the newer one appear?

Thanks for the comments though :)

As for the gearbox - It'd be manual or if I'm lucky S-Tronic. Though I believe I'd need a 2012 model to get S-Tronic - and I ain't that rich :)

The old engine was around 225ps and was stopped in around 2007.

If it's 240/245ps then it will be the newer one.

It's a cracking engine and sounds very smooth and has a lovely throaty sound when given the beans.

We also left nearly all other cars on the road on the snow and ice stood still. The grip with winter tyres and the throttle punched to the floor was staggering.

I also think that these are a chain driven engine so no silly engine-out cambelt changes.

If you can afford the running costs etc then go for it. Having said that on a cruise they will return surprisingly good economy. A high speed run (top speed of 220km/h most of the time) to the coast in the new one saw around 9.5l/100km (24mpg) with 4 passengers. The lower and lighter audi would do better on fuel I bet.

Yeah - I'm not exactly hard pushing on cars most of the time as I commute in rush hour mainly.....

I can get 60mpg out of my car when I want to, but pushed I can get low 40's :D

I'd love a hot hatch, but then so does my wife - doesn't really make sense to have two when one of us can have something grown up (plus she only does 3K per year so higher fuel consumption isn't a big problem) and we can share cars.

That or I can just go and get a nearly new vRS for £12-14K and have 2.0TSI fun.... I just don't know what to do..

EDIT: The only big problem is that I'd imagine that 3.0TDI has a DPF. I do 10K a year, but predominantly town driving. I do 10 minutes on motorway to work, then 15 minutes through town home. Long run once a fortnight.

DPF is probably asking for trouble - and why diesel puts me off nowadays.

The Pink Lady had one. She's probably too busy to reply, making hay while the sun shines.

Well the Audi with the 3.0 tdi would be fun in that it is very effortless and will pick up speed scarily quick. Will leave a lot of red-faced people standing at the traffic lights... but it's not very chuckable and revvable if you know what I mean.

I guess you will just have to test drive one and see what you think.

If you can afford it then get the S-Tronic. If it's anything like the Touareg box it is silky smooth and very responsive.

Not too worried about chuckable - that can be my wife's car :)

Comfortable AND quick? Yes please.

I tried the Allroad with that engine. Very rapid, very refined, 40mpg including a back road blat. Awesome!

Apparently the new BiTDi is even more awesome...

The 3.0 tfsi is a much bigger bargain if you can find one, much more fun to drive much faster and a lot cheaper second hand they are a bit thirsty tho.......
