Estate Tailgate inner trim removal

Featured Replies

I am looking to fit a rear view camera to my estate, and wondered how easy it is to remove the inner trim to the tailgate so that i can run the cables. I also need to feed them through.the rubber flexible tubes on either side at the top.

Any advice would be very welcome.

Many Thanks

Hi Davidj241,

Hopefully this helps you.

Regarding pulling through the rubber tubes, on my old car (not a skoda) I just used a coat-hanger bent into a hook to pull the video cable through.

Thanks for this I'll give it a go later

Be warned the clips are a bast##d to remove!

why do you want to fit a camera when you have parking sensors, or are you just bored.

Also looking to fit a rear view camera to my car and doing some research found some comments suggesting fitting the camera to either the underside of the bumper /or in the bumper running the cables through the rubber grommet in the side of the spare wheel well and then under the carpets to the dash. Still doing research as found a website where I can fit a dvr recording unit using sd cards so can be used as a cctv system for the car when parked and driving that will record up to 4 cameras for vandalism/damage when parked and as a black box for insurance when driving.

I'll be watching this thread seeing how you get on as this is something I'd like to add to mine.

You may find that a squirt or two of silicone spray will help

For me it will be a great help when hitching up on my own

SO Please please please give details of how it is done...what tool where to leaver against....picture of clips and what they go into...etc.

The metal clips look like this:

They fit into rectangular holes in the tailgate.

I use a combination of my trim removal tools (they are plastic and are designed to be sacrificial... you damage / mark the tool rather than the trim / paintwork):

Pull the trim away from the tailgate as far as possible (don’t do this on a cold day as the trim can split easily) and insert the tool as close as possible to the clips, whilst pulling the trim, some clips will just pop out on their own without the need to use the tool.

When refitting it is important to make sure these clips line up with the holes in the tailgate otherwise they will not go into the hole and the clips will just bend, which will result in the trim rattling.

Thought I'd add to this thread for the next person who might try to remove the trim.

Just completed a dashcam with rear camera install on a 2014 Superb.

btw thanks for the exploded diagram davidj241 (from 2012).

When removing the bottom trim my biggest tip would be to ensure to start prising away from the joint section (where the plastic rivet is) between bottom and top trims.

The trim pulls away easiest if you imagine hinging from the boot-lock end, something which I learnt too late.

If you prise away from the lock end first (like I stupidly did) toward the wiper then the locating pins in the centre will deform and jar the trim against the upper trim - which is what happened to me.

You can free up the clips around the bottom of the tail gate (6 clips), as well as the 2 clips along both edges, but leave the middle ones (under the rear screen) until you have prised apart the plastic riveted section.

The best way to visualise is that the trim fits back on easiest by locating the boot-lock end clips first and then hinging from there.

Have a close look at the exploded diagram and notice the direction the clip holders near the wipers go.

Good luck.

John

By the time I read the steps in Diggiboy's post the exploded diagram under davidj241's profile (from 2012) had disappeared so I thought I would add an image of the tailgate trim and add further steps to assist removal. I needed to replace the tailgate lock (damp had corroded and caused one of the microswitch contacts to snap resulting in no boot lights; torch not lighting up; no open boot indicator on MaxiDot; and alarm triggering when opening just the boot). Also had an intermittent rear wiper motor that needed replacing.

Removing tailgate trim on Skoda Superb Mk2 LK Estate

  1. The tailgate is fixed by one screw in the centre of the rubber pull strap. That's it - after that it's all held by clips and you will need strong plastic trim tools to leverage the trim off.

  2. As I was unable to prise the trim off Tailgate Closeup of Trim Socket.jpgfrom the area around the wiper I too started at the lock end. And brute force finally got the trim off the wiper end. It was then that I noticed that the wiper end of the trim had lips on the corners of the folded back part that tucked into the plastic guides on the tailgate - left and right by the boot strops. This part of the trim should really Tailgate Trim Full View with corner in circle.jpghave been prised off first as they lock the top in position with a post that goes into the tube on the plastic guides (see phots below)

  3. Thanks for the tip about aligning the clips to the butt end of their relevant mounting slots and the definite necessity of having an assistant with the use of a torch to check all clip locations were aligned to the slots - the trim went back on without a hassle.
