Turbo lag

Featured Replies

Morning all,

Ive fitted a aet hybrid turbo, bam injectors de cat front mount cooler 4 bar pump and pressure regulator and had a custom rs tuning remap.

Now whats annoying me is its very very laggy not on full boost till 4k, paul @ rs tuning said if that was his turbo hed throw it throught the fu**ing window as its lazy! But he also said timing could be out could this be true? And is there any other things it could be? Im nit clued up on vags as ive come from the rs scene.

Its having timing belt done in next few weeks to see if thats the issue, i realy dont want to be taking turbo off again any help be great thanks

could he not adjust the timing when he was mapping it to see if thats the prob, also what hybrid is it,the way i understand it bigger turbo more lag

Its not that big its just a ko3s hybrid with ko4 internals and 360 bearings

Is it hitting correct boost levels? as hitting boost at 4k might imply a leak somewhere.... that would be my first thought.

Ive got a boost gauge to fit to see whats happining, its strong when comes on but a standard vrs would be off before i hit boost

could he not adjust the timing when he was mapping it to see if thats the prob, also what hybrid is it,the way i understand it bigger turbo more lag

I assume he meant the cambelt timing not the ignition timing.

Sorry can't help but a boost log in 3rd from 2K to redline using vcds would show us if its meating requested boost.

Yes cambelt timing could that cause it he said something along the lines it wouldnt advance nemore

Could be his map mate i just read bowders thread on changing his map from revo to shark and the shark map he said spooled the turbo sooner than the revo map did? Just a thought read his thread mate

Is the actuator set up correctly?

  • Author

Yes theres enough preload brand new turbo smart actuator everything was new, cant see it been the map as paul was moaning snd trying to get it to spool up but couldnt

  • Author

No matter how much load we put on the actuator it dintnt change anything

so exatly what turbo setup is it ??

k03s shell with k04 internals or k04hybrid internals???

has the mannifold been ported to help spool???

the problem is normally that the turbo is not a good match to your specific setup and modifications at present !!!

what turbo inlet and maf are you running ??

what cooler are you running and how is it piped

  • Author

Its a ko3s with ko4 internals 360 degree bearings im running stock maf and tip

Yes manifold has been ported

  • Author

Cooler is a toyosport front mount from turbo to n/sthrough cooler to inlet

you should be running a 3 inch maf and a decent free flowing tip pipe !!!

you need to also find the exact spec of your turbo as there are lots of variations in wheel specs !!!

So i take it its nothing to do with the timing? If i buy a samco tip and a 3inch maf will it need a remap again

just double check the timing mark it up and spin it over and check

i would then get a 3 inch maf and tip pipe and have the map tweaked with these in place

what sort of figures have you been told???

but i would also try and find the spec of the turbo as hybrids can change lots !!!

Il get invoice out tommorow and ring them, been told around 270bhp it did 258, im happy when its on song but its too lazy and its ****ing me off

I know the bigger MAF and injectors will make the most of the turbo but how would it cause lag?

Even if the turbo is new don't expect the actuator to be setup correctly.

That's a lot for stock injectors and 4 bar isn't it?

he has bam injectors ;-)

and 4 bar is fine can run 3 bar if he wants its just down to the mapper !!

small tip pipe and small maf wont help get the air into the turbo thats it needs as its bigger !!!!

standard maf and tip 270bhp??

look at a k04 setup then see what the use and all will be fine

its going to spool a fair bit later than a stock k03s but thats part and parcel of a bigger turbo !!!

you should find ount the spec so you can look at the compressor flow and see what it should flow and when.

+1 for compressor spec equal size compressor wheels both inlet and exhaust will result in high RPM comming onto and maintaining full boost. A well balanced hybrid for your use may consist of a inlet compressor smaller than exhaust I.e K03s inlet wheel or very slightly larger coupled with K04 exhaust side. This has the same effect as up gearing a car/4x4 with larger tyres.

The larger the exhaust wheel, the quicker the inlet compressor spools generating positive boost earlier hence boost before 4k rev band. However an unbalanced turbo (cheap eBay stuff) could be as suggested lazy as the wheels may be too equal in size to give you any chance of a quick spool regardless of the 360degree thrust bearing!

Supporting mods like injectors are neccessary to maintain air fuel ratios for good combustion within the cylinders. However upgrading the MAF to a 3" will help the car drastically cope with the neccessary fueling trims etc it's probably worth a mention also that have you fitted an upgraded N75 valve as per the 225/250 engines? Doesn't this control the boost regulations for the 1.8T?

BTW im just generalising here - sorry if my info's some what no applicable

Adz

Ah forgot about the BAM injectors :)

My stock ko3s doesnt hit peak boost until 3.5k ish anyways so 4k aint terrible

Im running same turbo mate an its the same power comes in around 4k, i actually prefer it that way reduces wheel spin alot
