LED boot light

Featured Replies

Has anyone got led boot lights? Just bought some side facing led bulbs but they are not exactly mind blowing.

Recommend leds? superskoda has these high powered ones, anyone fitted these?

Ta!

If you are trying to make it harder to see things in your boot at night, and to spend money, then LEDs are definitely the way to go for this application.

I put some cheap ones in the boot - they didn't go out when the boot shuts, they just dim.

Now running normal filament ones in there again.

I have the SuperSkoda door lights (which are the same) and they are super bright! Prob not worth the ££ for the boot though IMO.

Haha very well. Lets face it, the bulbs are pretty poor, my led replacements aint far off, but.... i have run extra wiring for a light on the other side, for an extra light i need leds.

Do you concur?

I have 360 degree ones in mine off eBay and they are excellent and much more brighter than standard ones.

Yeah £30 is a bit pricey.

I expect someone has LEDs, some worth buying. Ive got a false floor boot build, need some light for general tinkering/getting the spare wheel out.

I noticed they dont turn off but I imagine a resistor will sort this... :wonder:

Do you have the link ol' chap?

I'm on my phone at the mo I'll have a look later for you :)

My led,s go off when you close the boot as I stuck my phone in there and video recorded after shutting tailgate and they went off.

they must be canbus leds...

Same, mine are the tower style ones. Found them in my box of misc car bits. Better than OEM ones for sure,

Ahhh I see said the blind man! I'm surprised they work well as most the light is shining away from the boot space

I folded down the seat & looked through the window. :giggle:

But they are basically the same as standard bulbs but LED. All round light. They've been great so far. The Octy boot is a big boot to illuminate.

I have the superskoda interior light kit which replaces the two 501's and single festoon bulb with 20 led's and is really bright, have seen pics of their door and boot led kits and they look good too.

I have a fairly cheap SMD LED Strip of blue LEDs in my boot, only because the filament bulb just plain didn't work!

They don't turn off when the boot closes but with the power they use I don't mind, and you really have to be looking to see it. They work pretty well actually, everything is lit pretty well even in pitch black :)

I found this topic searching for boot light problems. I have a Fabia VRS Mk1 (2004) that I have had since new. I recently upgraded my boot light with a Superskoda LED unit. I was rather puzzled that it is sold as a pair because I only have one boot light on the passenger side.

Anyway, apart from the fact that the metal trim clip doesn't fit on the new Superskoda light it seems to work well. I glued it into the carpet type trim with contact adhesive. My only issue is that the light dims when the boot is closed but doesn't turn off completely. Does anyone know why this is and what can be done? I also have Superskoda LED puddle lights and these turn off properly. I can't remember whether the old standard filament light went off completely. I think it did but it was so dim I might not have seen it. I'm wondering whether a switch or door sensor is not working properly.

You bought a pair of white lights for the front doors by the sound of it

hence the unnecessary spare.

Your sensor is working fine, The old light would be out completely as it requires 20

odd times the current to make it light up. Its own filament creating

natural resistance in the circuit.

Residual current in the circuit causes the LED to glow,

resistors in line will cure it but is a bit of a faff especially if you aren't handy

with a soldering iron.

The glow won't cause any harm but It will drain your battery over long periods

of non use.

Thank you. It is the boot light Fabia 1 kit from Superskoda but perhaps it is intended for the estate variant. I have a friend who is a whizz with electronics and builds his own stuff so adding a resistor shouldn't be a problem. Do you know what value resistor? There are 2 wires to the light. Resistor in series on the live?

I'd be reluctant to go back to the old light. My sudden interest in my VRS has been sparked by a new job that involves a lot more driving. I do still get a buzz from driving the car and it makes me grin luring other drivers into a sense of superiority and then tearing away. So far I've pretty much taken the interior to bits adding extra soundproofing and fixed all kinds of silly little annoyances but that's another topic. Next thing is some upholstery work from Seat Surgeons and some attention to various minor paintwork chips and scratches.

I've been thinking about this today. I understand that the resistance of the LED light is much less than the old filament one but I don't understand why there is any current flowing in the circuit if the boot is shut. Surely there should be no current at all. If I add a resistor I can see that might stop the light from glowing dimly when the boot is shut but surely there will still be a small current heating up the resistor instead and the battery will still drain. Isn't there a microswitch in the boot lock that should cut the current off completely when the boot is shut or is it that there is a relay somewhere that is not being triggered properly? I could measure the resistance of a standard bulb and add that in series.

Update: spoke to a friend who understands electronics better than I do. He suggested that the only reason the boot light might glow dimly when the boot is shut is if there is tiny current used to detect a failed bulb. However, this wouldn't account for it for 2 reasons: there would be no current with the ignition off and there is no bulb fail detection on the boot light.

I went out to get something from the boot just now and the light is completely out having opened and closed the boot a few times today. I still think it's the microswitch allowing a small current to pass due to wear or corrosion. I found a thread about the microswitch in the Octavia door lock. I don't know whether there is a similar arrangement in the Fabia hatchback lock. I will investigate and maybe try to replace the microswitch or maybe just get a new lock.

Have you tried buying some 99p cheap Chinese LED's? I've got them in my side lights, numberplate & waiting for them to come for the interior.

Is it really worth getting them for your boot? Don't think I've ever had to go in my boot when its been dark. That's all.

Really wanted LED lighting on the rear but I'm not convinced with the quality of the lighting
