Brake disc recommendations

Featured Replies

I am looking to buy some 312mm discs.

I seem to remember someone posting that they bought some that had the edges and the centres already painted with an anti-corrosion paint in black or similar?

Anyone know which manufacturer it was?

I am not after grooved or drilled, just standard 312mm discs with the painted edges and centre.

pagid ones from eurocar parts have a silver anti rust coating on them

Thanks - a lot have the silver coating on now, but someone posted some pictures of ones where the non-friction surfaces had already been painted in black anti-corrosion.

Thought if they were about the same price might give them a whirl. If they are more than a few quid more a disc I'll probably go with Brembo or Pagid (if not just OEM from TPS)

+1 for Pagid, I personally won't use anything else. The coating works very well and I have used them on at least three different cars over the years. Brembos offer good braking performance but unless they have changed recently don't have a coating, so will rust up.

+2 for pagid

+3 for Pagid, good price from ECP too with the 25-31% discounts (depending on what code is active).

I think it was Brembos that had the black anti rust coating as an option on some models

EBC do the disks with the black coating on.

TBH, discs rust, even on expensive cars.

When I had my Mark IV Golf GTi I painted the hubs on a set of OEM 312mm discs with black BBQ paint. Cured the paint using an electric paint stripper - seem to work OK. Just had to make sure this I masked off the braking surface of the disc before spraying.

Another vote for Pagid and the silver coating on them that gets swept off where the pads contact the disc.

Avoid Black Diamond discs - the rust was showing through the coating after 1 week. I removed them after 1 month!!! A very expensive mistake. I took pictures meaning to moan about this but never got around to it. I may dig them out.

Give Godspeed a ring before you buy. Found them excellent quality at the right price. Used them for the Skodas, for big break conversions & even boggo discs for my sons Rover Diesel http://www.godspeedbrakes.co.uk/ If you want the best performance consider grooved discs, have curved grooves as it eliminates rumble at low speeds. They have all their own machines so can groove to whatever pattern you want & also make custom discs & Bells for bespoke conversions. Ive seen AP 6 pots + 335 discs behind stock Octy Mk 1 VRS wheels

I would not recommend Godspeed - customer service in my experience was utterly appalling.

Although the product was good and good vfm too.

They were sometimes hard to get hold of in the early days as Ian was manufacturing & running the office as well but now they have grown a bit Ive never had an issue. Its always a good product at the right price

I thought Pagid made the OE discs and pads for VAG. I have the discs that came with the car from new and they are not rusting that bad at all, considering they are 6 years old now.

I've used three sets of 312 Brembos over various cars, and they do have coating on the non friction surfaces to stop them from rusting.

Yep, no wheel marks on the centre and a perfect retaining screw, plus cleaner marks and you can still read the word tarrox on the pad liner.

Cheers for all the replies guys - looks like it is Pagid, Brembo or OEM in that order but will look in to the EBC discs as well

That's reassuring, I've got a pair of those brembos in the garage waiting to go on.

Even if the do rust, the Brembo I fitted on the last car worked well. They also had a couple of dimples in them so you could see when they were worn past putting another set of pads on and when they were at minimum usable depth.

A very handy feature.

Brembo looking like a good choice then.

So, next question - pads!

I do mainly motorway driving rather than spirited country lane driving, I would like something that is low dust. EBC Ultimax look good to me, or maybe Greenstuff?

Avoid the greens and god red or oem IMHO.

Oem are cheap, red are a lt better than green and low dust.

Looking at the costs, I might just go OEM all round for discs and pads, getting them from TPS.

It will be an improvement over 288mm with OEM discs and pads anyway, which is all I wanted.

From what I have been told , discs that rust on the surface quickly usually means a high steel content. Which is a good thing. Or am i mistaken?
