Octavia II, front brakes not releasing properly?

Featured Replies

Afternoon :),

I took our 2009, and new to us, Octavia estate down to France and she did great.... Until we were crawling through a town in stop-start traffic, maybe reaching 10 mph. We had a grinding noise (when foot off the brake pedal) from the front which would stop if I let the traffic get ahead, gunned her up and did the next 50m at speed! After we'd braked the grinding started again up. Twice, on that day and the next) on rough surfaces there was a 'clank' but we'd nothing on the road behind, there was no debris at all and everything works/worked.

I've checked the wheel arches and underside for obstructions / dents/ /stuff hanging down but nothing showing. She's not done it since (grind or clank). Her MOT is in 2 weeks away but I am not sure what I should be telling the garage to look for since she stops OK, does not judder or pull over and the noise has now stopped.

So, has anyone else had any similiar low speed brake grinding - if it is the brakes..?

Thanks

Matt

probably some gravel stuck in there dude, the clank was probably it making its way out again!

Lots of gravel in France- pavements are usually covered with the stuff.

I think there must be a point around the brake disc or hub on the Octavia which is prone to temporarily trapping stones or other tiny bits of road debris, allowing them to rub against the thin steel shield at the back of the disc. It doesn't affect the operation of the brakes in any way but can sound very loud when moving slowly.

I had this noise which irritatingly started up just as I was driving to the airport on holiday last year. It did it on the way back home two weeks later, but next day as I was backing out of the drive there was a faint rattle and clang as if something dropped out from behind the wheel and the noise was gone, never to return.

OK thanks - odd but relieved at the same time!

I usually find it is bits of the dust shield getting trapped behind there as they flake off due to corrosion

Must get round to replacing them before the winter really

can that shield be removed?

wat is its purpose?

I had this problem before ended up being harl after next door getting the wall re-harlled and it was stuck in the backing plate/pad area, got the wheel off and a screwdriver in there, sorted in 15 mins :sun:
