Coilovers with a baby?

Featured Replies

As im going to be keeping my car for a few years yet, I'm going to be "making it my own." I have alot planned .... but consuming ALOT of wonga!

First up on the list will be coilies. Thinking Weitec, as I've read a few threads from searching through here, that they are pretty comfy.

But as the title suggests, it can't be too firm due to the little one. She's 8 months, and really good at falling asleep in the VRS at the mo, even on some really bumpy roads. But will coilovers be too much? I doubt it will to be honest as she loves gravel and paved surfaces in her buggy.

Are there any parents out there with coilies?

Cheers

Alright mate. I have just picked up my vrs with JOM coilovers fitted. They are cheap and not as good as weitecs IMO as I had them on my Lcr. And my daughter has no problems staying asleep on bumpy roads (I live in the middle of nowhere on Norfolk) definitely a good move getting them and you can't go wrong with weitecs!!!

Thats good to hear :) Have been swaying towards the weitecs, buts its just the price tbh. Could have two sets of JOMS for the price of one set of weitecs ££££

May I ask how low you are? Have you had any problems with ground clearance going to those family places?

I have 2 kids and they have grown up with all but 1 of my cars over the last 10 years on coil overs - some better makes than others. (my kids are now 8 & 5)

I have no idea on the measurements for how low as I brought them on and set up. I'll flick through the paperwork tomorrow and try find out. The have shortened drop links from a polo fitted.

You can see pics of how low under my thread in fabia journal section.

I have had no problems with ground clearance as yet although in my cupra r I couldn't use multi story car parks and I will try to avoid them now. That was damaging the splitter though, not the underside

And my daughter is 14 months with another on the way soon. :-)

My first polo 6n was down 105mm on 8x15 rims - kids still slept in it - even when I smashed the sump

Congratulations :)

Your fabia looks ace, i love the height, thats what id like mine at!

When you say the JOMs feel cheap, is the ride crashy, or does it feel less refined than the weitecs?

Less refined. I wouldn't say they are crashy. They are surprisingly "springy" and comfortable when cruising around normally and then great for when you are on your own... ;-) ill put it this way, if they break at some point in the future I wouldn't hesitate in getting them again. Especially at such a decent price. Then use the spare cash on upgrading brakes.

Iv had my little nephew in my Fabia, slept like a baby (excuse th? pun), I'm running KW v1's. I don't think a slightly stiffer ride will be noticed by a baby/toddler tbh.

I had Weitec's on my Golf, wouldn't describe them as "comfy"...

The AP kit is also a very good option and similar to the Weitec kit and also made by KW.

+1

I think the 45 profile tyre helps with comfort too

Cheers guys!

I think I may go for the JOMs for now, then if I don't like them, I can start saving for a better quality kit.

I hope when youngy says "springy" that there not twitchy and nervous at high speeds?

Really don't want to loose confidence when pushing on

Go for the best kit you can afford mate, especially with baby in car and when you're alone you enjoy 'spirited' driving ;)

Personally with coilovers the cheapest I'd go is AP. I used KW V1's for just a little bit more and when pressing on they seem to get better and better with speed.

They are definitely NOT scary or twitchy at high speeds!!!! And I will be taking to the track Saturday too.

I meant they feel more like standard suspension when driving normally compared to other coilovers I've had.

Thanks again guys! Think I shall go for the JOMs for now. Worse comes to the worst, Ill take them back off, flog them and get some Weitecs or KWs (Y)

Young kids/babies will sleep through World War III, lol.

Mine sometimes does, but something simple, like me switching on the xbox can wake her up :|

Could be that it makes a high pitched noise she can hear, but you can't. That or she doesn't want you to play on it :D

Thats true. She finds it funny when I play on it though, she will happily watch and laugh at the screen! Oh and for some reason she loves hitting the controller

wait til she gets older like my daughter and turns the tv over or the xbox off!! :wall::rofl:

Oh god! :(

nought wrong with joms mate, i do alot of mileage, mine has been slammed for a couple days on em, at theyre least comfy setting, and it handled all of my round in varying conditions, firm but not annoying at all. Done 600 miles on them so far, if i raised em up they would be even better, but im not of a mind to do that yet.

Only touched down exiting one customers drive where my exhaust screeched comfortingly over theyre tarmac hump in garden.

Thanks mate :) I think I am going to take the plunge on a set of JOMs! Nearly everyone has good reviews for them. Plus they have an extra years warranty than others like the Weitec kit. So hopefully if I have a problems with seals going in the damper these may be replaced under warranty (as i do close to 20k a year)

Bet they were pleased with the sound :p

yeah he came out and laughed at me scraping my car, i pretended it was damaged so he didnt bother with his drive. Souldne just gone a little to left wouldve been fine.

I went with veedubmachine les was very helpful and it was a cheap kit, its pro sport who took over from jom.

heres the difference
