Re-Map Aftercare

Featured Replies

Morning everyone just a quick one, im having my car remapped tomorrow afternoon and i remember reading several times there are a few things you can do to avoid eating your clutch/gearbox.

I am just after some tips on how to change my driving to prelong the clutch/gearbox life on a remapped car. Its a 06 plate with 70k on clock if that makes any difference.

Cheers

Nath

Don't floor it below 2k revs to save your clutch and dmf

Cheers for speedy reply! Is that it? no run in period etc i can come straight from remap and boot it around as long as its over 2k revs?

Yep that's it :) just remember to start braking earlier as you'll probably be doing double your normal speed everywhere!

You don't need to change your driving stile much at all and when and if your clutch goes you can upgrade it like I did, did the fly wheel at same time as there was a bit of play in it. My gear box is still hanging on with no problems at all. I wouldn't worry about it two much stage to is really when you need to start thinking hard about stuff like that :) just have fun because after a map it will feel like a new car

Mines getting done next Thursday, a Shark map but from a dealer! Cannot wait.

Just a quick question, if I'm sat still idling for a bit after a couple of minutes my car seems to vibrate.... It goes when I press the clutch in?

smooth changes would help im sure, and progressive pedal pushing instead of banging your foot down

You can always ask for the torque to be limited, up to 300 lbft is a safe (ish) level I believe for a standard clutch.

I have no problems with 290 lbft.

Sounds like dual mass judder m8.. id think of replacing with a new one or a single mass if your getting it mapped

Hmm it only seems to do it when I'm facing down hill?

Heard not but bad things with solid fly wheels my mates mum has a fleet of vrs's and she put two on her cars and she wishes she never

She said I'd makes the car really judder on gear changes which makes sense as that's what dual mass is designed for. I haven't drove her cars tho so just speaking from her experience ano her cars have high mileage if that makes a difference? But followed her advice and refitted a dual mass on mine

Hummmm, sounds odd. Iv done 164,000 miles and have a smf fitted, no issues with juddering, can drive it as smoothly as before it was fitted.

Maybe it's just her driving style then? Will ask her wen I next see her

Could just be the clutch release bearing

Cheers Guys, Loving the remap and following all your tips everything spot on!

Don't floor it below 2k revs to save your clutch and dmf

Lol. You get a remap so you can go faster, and then don't floor it?! May as well buy an Audi R8 and stick a brick under the accelerator pedal.

Tbh not to save your clutch but in first l, second and third it will save your tyres too!

He said don't floor it below 2K. I call that mechanical sympathy

Why would you floor it below 2,000rpm anyway? If you really wanna get shifting drop a gear? (i`m talking in higher gears obviously) As said bit of mechanical sympathy will save you £££££ in repair bills.

Not that I am fortunate enough to have a re-map but on the subject of mechanical sympathy keep you foot off of the clutch (ie on the foot rest) when not changing gear, even light foot pressure can cause slipage, especially if you are already pushing the operating limits of the unit.

Ok maybe I'm not getting it as I only have 68bhp petrol and driving with the pedal planted to the carpet is a predictable experience. I know if I used the pedals on a super car, like I do mine, I wouldn't be alive, lol. It still seems like paying for something with no end reward though.

Maybe not getting a remap is being mechanically sympathetic?! and saves your wallet too!

Well when i floor my non mapped vRS in first or second the asr kicks in and puts a scupper on my bit of fun...... I seldom remember to turn it off so have learnt to drive my car properly so this doesn't inhibit me....brightest candle burns shortest....?!?

Even non mapped cars should be driving in the way were saying, saves undue stress & wear on the clutch & dmf in particular. It's not specific to having a remap, just more important because of the extra torque.
