Goodbye stilts!

Featured Replies

Got my vRS put onto Eibachs this morning. The difference is amazing. Much more precise steering and virtually no body roll.

Big thanks to JP at Jabbasport for fitting them to such a high standard and so quickly as well

Also just declard to my insurance company and there is no charge!

Will post some before and afters shortly

Which specific eibachs?

Prokit 20mm

Sure does lot for handling...

How is it ride-wise? About as "bad" as original?

id say slightly worse, but made up for by the advantages in handling. When going quick on bumpy roads before it would be bouncing around all over the place and be quite unstable. Now it doesn't bounce around nearly as much and is more stable.

which insurance company mind saying?

What's the difference between the VRS suspension and the Monte's "sports" supsension? any, or not? The Monte seems crashy at times, but I never seem to have a problem with the handling (rails...). Maybe the heavier (?) TDI lump sticks it to the road better?

It's greatly subjective I'd say... I'm sure If I drove your Monte (or any other stock Monte or vRS) I'd find the body roll just as annoying and clearly present as in mine before I do any of the suspensions mods. It's just what everybody considers sufficient (or not...) and how much he likes pushing the car into corners etc. What one thinks of as an acceptable handling behaviour maybe totally crap for another.

I remember once taking a friend out for a test drive, at a time where I had temporarily removed the ARB for some maintenance and was so frustrated by the return of stock behaviour. So after the test drive was over, I was just about to start apologizing "Well, I know it floated a lot on quick corners but it's only because I took the ARB off yesterday" as my friend tells me: "Wow, that thing drives like a GO-Kart!" and I'm like... "What??? Well, ok if you think so....". Of-course he is not the most "passionate" driver out there so by his standards, yes, the stock vRS drove like a Go-Kart whereas for me it was trully annoying... Each to his own I guess...

Yes, I agree, it's subjective, but is the standard VRS suspension the same as the Monte's Sports suspension (15mm lower?), or is it a different set up again.

I feel the body roll in the Monte more than I used to in the Octy or Superb, but it is a taller car (comparative to length) and not ridiculous. I can see how it would be annoying if you pushed on a lot, but to date, I have had the nippers and wife in the car more often than not, or been stuck behind traffic which the stock 105bhp cannot dispatch!

The ride appears firm, as it can be very crashy over unven suirfcaes and struggles with speedbumps, potholes etc, even whne taken at slow speeds, but I guess some of this is to do with the rubber band profile rubber (205/40/17s) fitted, as much as the "sporty" suspension lowering.

In contrast, my Dad has had a Fabia II 3 and Elegance (I think), one on 16" and the latest on 15" wheels and he thinks it is a firm ride. I don't know, as he tends to drive a little more...sedately these days (he's now bus pass legal).

Argh! Work PC is driving me insane! I can't upload, it's now posting twice and I can't change my profile to get rid of the Pug 106!!

I don't know If they share the exact same suspension but I do know that the stock vRS is lowered 15mm from the rest of the range so my guess is it could be the same.

A Monte Carlo, even a diesel one is a fair bit lighter than a vRS.

At least the weight of a chunky driver like me lighter.

Even 2 normal sized people lighter.

george

From what I can see from the online brochures the Tsi Monte is always lighter than the tdi version. It is even lighter than the lightest tdi version. TDI Monte reaches 1,219kg and indeed the vrs is heavier than all at 1,318kg.

Wowzers - thanks guys. I don't have much extra kit (well none to be exact), so 100kg is like having another me in the seat.

Maybe the remap I've been shown would be a good thing, making the Monte TDI nearly as real world fast as the VRS. It already feels quicker than the quoted 0-60 time, even using a basic "one thousand-two thousand-three thousand" count as I cane it up the road...

A few times the properly shoddy roads around here have given thumps so large I have had to stop to do an inspection, for fear of having snapped something!

That is higher than the official Kerb Weights in the UK.

The Gross weights are high.

You can always remove the 25 kg ballast from the rear bar of a vRS hatch,

then the spare wheel.

Half tanks of fuel & removed the rear seats & the sprung weight you carry about can soon be reduced.

george

The Monte would need more than a remap to be nearly as quick as a Vrs.

Atleast an induction kit, de dpf, de cat with free flowing exhaust. And a map. Still think you'd get left for dust then though.

Had this with mine too before I had the Eibach's fitted. I thought it was rolling all over and the steering wasn't very precise but my passenger said she thought it was really nimble and was really impressed at how it handled.

Also pics taken on a slight slope so you don't get the full effect, but you get the idea

Much nicer I think you will agree

looks much better, hope it doesn't become "bouncy" like the mark I's did after a while on eibachs....

I want to to it (I have driven one with these springs, and it IS better, there's no doubt) BUT will it last or just shag the shocks like it did on the mark I?

anyone done any real miles with lowered springs alone, and got feedback?

This is exactly what I'd like to know too.

Mine has done around 4k since the eibachs were fitted, but there's been no noticeable bouncing yet

Not sure how many miles iv done since lowering but its fecking awful, my mum and dad hate being in my car its that harsh

Its like driving an over inflated bouncey castle, worth it though since it means actualy being able to corner now :)

Strange, I think comfort-wise the ride is as crashy as before, not worse anyway.
