iPod Touch or iPhone

Featured Replies

SWMBO wants an iPod-like device to play music on, and has already bought a radio with iPod docking.

The simple answer would be to get an iPod Touch, but her phone drives her potty as it's too small and slow (HTC Wildfire) so I'm thinking of killing two birds with one stone and buying an iPhone for her on a new contract.

I'm discounting the iPhone 3 for a number of reasons, and the iPhone 4 (not the 4S) is not available on my preferred networks. The 4S still seems a bit expensive.

Shall I wait for the iPhone 5 to come out, and make the 4S cheaper? Or just get the iPod Touch and a better phone on the right network later?

There is a very strong rumour of an iPad mini that should be announced early September.

Really depends how much music you want to carry around and if any phone you buy will not have some degree of music playing ability.

It would be sensible to delay any decision until at least 12 September (the rumoured next Apple announcement date) as this will more than likely lower the price of the iPhone 4S and certainly put many used items into the market place.

There is also rumours that the new iPhone will have a different charge/dock connection, thus rendering her docking station useless unless she wants an older version phone. The moral of the story, decide what you want before rushing out and buying accessories!

If it is purely for music, she could do worse than buying an old iPod nano. I recently bought a third gen nano from a member on here and it's a fab little thing. As its not a phone/iPod touch there is no risk of wasting space by filling it with apps and photos and messages and emails etc, its purely music and audiobooks. It will store pics (though why you'd do this is anyone's guess) and also videos if you really want. The battery life is pretty good, it's nice and light and transportable. I use it at the gym as it sits in my pocket much better than my phone while I'm exercising. It will fit all the docks etc too. You can pick them up pretty cheap, even from Cex, which are pretty much top dollar being a high street used electricals store.

Then she can get whatever phone she wants when the time is right. I agree the wildfire is annoying. My mum has the wildfire S!

If her iPod dock has an aux input, which I would hope it does, she can play music through her phone too, and any other device with a 3.5mm jack. It just won't charge it that's all. But if you're next to a plug socket you can charge it independently at the same time.

Apple may produce an 'adaptor' so you can use all your existing accessories although this is not confirmed.

Someone will, surely. It will look bit daft though, makes the whole point of a dock redundant!

Yes have heard this also, but I'm sure that either Apple will cave in or produce a very cheap adaptor.

Back OT, when we decided to ditch the CD player and bookcase full of CDs, we opted for a refurbished iPod Touch 32GB version. Vastly reduced price over a brand new one and no difference at all.

Bought a Philips Dock system and all is well!

If the screen is too small on an iPhone, try an iPad.

I'm loving mine.

Love my iPad, but it won't fit in a dock :p lol

Also I really don't use I for music, I still think old iPod nano!

I was in this situation a long while back. Had a iPod touch and held my music on that as my Sony Ericsson phone was crap with music. Ended up upgrading to an iPhone 3GS and have kept apple ever since.

iPhone 5 will be using a smaller plug so would stay away from that. Someone will make a plug to adapt the new socket to fit the old but i doubt it will be fir a while :0(. iPhone 4S and 4 pricing will plummet as soon as the 5 is out so probably get one of those :).

Apple made a MagSafe to MagSafe 2 adapter from almost as soon as it was announced. Works well. Hope the new iPhone has an adapter to do the same.
