Hi all,

I recently bought a 02 Skoda Octavia VRS and at 120,000 miles suddenly the ECS & Engine Warning/Malfunction light came on....firstly the Engine Warning then the ECS. This occurred following a 980 mile weekend trip. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

Any help greatfully received!

You might need to get it scanned mte. However a clean of the throttle body may help. Any loss of power? If you buy an elm 327 Bluetooth adapter of eBay and download torque pro on your smart phone, costs under 15 quid and you can scan it yourself.

Ive not experienced any loss of power yet. Seems to be performing every bit as well as it always has.

Its due an MOT on Saturday, will any of this cause the MOT to fail? Im worried its emissions because of what the Handbook says, the Haynes Manual is no help at all but most of what Ive read seems to say its not emissions but brake lights???

ah yes, the brake light switch at the pedal is sometimes a problem. Get someone to check the lights work, this may need changed, just a few pounds

Cleaning the throttle body is always a good thing to do as a matter of course anyway.

Could be almost anything in the engine, the fact that theres no power loss means it's not too serious, could be emissions though, my o2 sensor gave up and the car ran fine !!

How much was the fix for the O2 sensor David8?

IIRC it was £110 for the sensor, my mate fitted for free !!

Mind it only took minutes, you a diagnostic scan to be sure its that though you could end up chasing your tail without one

Its booked in for a Diagnostic Scan @ Clays Vehicle Repairs in MK at 5pm

Just been diagnosed by the very good and cheap guys at Clays Vehicle Repairs. The fault code indicates its a Mass Airflow Sensor problem. He switched off the light and advised me to drive around but if it is the MAF then I should expect the light to come back on in about seven miles.

The problem is I will more than likely fail MOT based on this so need a quick repair. I'm working in Milton Keynes with no access to tools or time inside normal working hours to get to a garage. I'm home in the 'nam on Fridays afternoon/early evening and my MOT is Saturday morning.

Anyone know where I can find a cheap MAF Sensor? Also how hard are they to fit? I have a Haynes Manual but am struggling to find the instructions to do it.

Help?!?!

TPS or dealer about £90 exchange part so 140 and you get 54 back when you return the old one

Easy to fit you need a screwdriver and mole grips to open the spring clip. The fitting is obvious once you have s look. Open your bonnet and have a look it's after the airbox with a plug on it.

mr haynes chose not to mention it cos its a very easy job

Great! Sounds like something even a techno-dunce like me can do. Without actually spoonfeeding me the answer does anyone have an under bonnet pic showing exactly what Im looking for? It would help a lot and probably save me changing the wrong thing! LOL

Oddly after the guys at Clays diagnosed this problem they switched off the dashboard light and since then (about 35 miles later) neither has come back on again despite his warnings that it might.

Sounds like I may just get away with this MoT. Huzzah!

Look on the right side of the engine bay, you'll see the airbox with a thick black pipe running out of the left towards the engine. About 6 inches or so along this pipe is an electrical connector. This is the airflow meter connection, and you should see the retaining screws.

Hmmm....interesting! Just been out to check before this emssage and the thing I thought was the MAF does not have any retaining screws, its just a plug and play type thing.....must have the wrong connection.

**EDIT** Yeah like some prize muppet I was looking in the right area but wrong part......see attached pics. I thought it plugged into that pipework as opposed to being part of it. Am I right? This is it circled in red? post-94874-0-88568200-1345707017_thumb.jpg And this is the replacement part? post-94874-0-01555200-1345707026_thumb.jpg

Part being delivered tomorrow, to be fitted myself Friday night....MOT disaster averted! All for the princely sum of £72 delivered! Winner winner chicken dinner!

Thats the one, the bit with the wire should have two screws which hold the sensor in the housing (tube bit)

Where have you ordered from as the non genuine ones arn't brilliant, better off with a real bosch one than a copy.
