He He...Autobahn in the vRS...

Featured Replies

OK - is it me, or does the vRS (mine's an Estate, so allegedly quicker...) get a bit twitchy at about 125mph?

For reference, its a section of Autobahn I've done (A1 towards Trier from the Belgian border) 4 times now; last 3 in the Scirocco (1.4/160PS lump) and hit the quoted 134mph top speed. This was purely to satisfy my curiosity, you understand.. I couldn't get near that without shoving it in Sport suspension mode as it was way too twitchy, but even the vRS became a handful over 125 or so (and i've got to say, the speedo is more accurate in the Skoda, referring to the satnav). Has anyone dare hit the max mph without lowering/stiffening the suspension, or am I a bit of a wuss (or is that bit of the 'bahn just a bit too rough)? It happily sat at 120-ish for km after km; oil temp happily at just over 100 degrees...just a shame the tank only holds 10 gallons!

Not that i'm all that bothered to be honest - pulls like billy-o to 120mph as it is!

I had 130 before mine got abit sketchy, however since fitting eibach springs and a RARB I have done 146 no problems apart from the road noise which is horrendous even at 50 lol

Can't remember the tuneage on the stereo at the time (might have been Nirvana) but the wind/road noise didn't seem to get any worse over the ton...

Side winds from those viaducts/bridges might not have helped either!

The main problem will be the side winds, shake the **** out of the car!

Road noise is a real ball ache in the fabia's that is the main problem I have with mine.

I've been at an indicated 130 and didn't want to go faster..... (not public english roads)

we cross germany next month on the prague trip... and we will do an airfield day in czech republic, and 2 days at the ring on the way back,so will report back if I can get it higher ;) I dont like sidewinds at speed, our big ambulances can easily do 120 mph... but I often dont drive them above 90 on blues as the sidewinds and control is a problem... (and other drivers, space ect ... its all a constant risk assessment, so you drive accordingly, not just as fast as it will go)

same in the car... guess I agree with OP... maybe it could do with some real downforce at speed....

airfield I think will be the best place, no drivers pulling out on you! lol...

Ive only had mine a couple of weeks but I find the steering is very light and fidgetty/twitchy even at motorway speeds (80mph). Not sure if its down to the cheap tyres the cheapskate last owner has fitted on the front though. I might swap them to the back as the rears are the conti sport contacts still.

We'll see who can hold their nerves the longest ;)

I think it can often be down to the road surface and side winds!

For instance I have done 138mph in my car no problems on one stretch of Autobahn and felt very planted. Then on other sections it feels very hairy even doing 100-110mph.

Will be interesting to see what your guys V-max's are after the prague trip... oh and we want GPS records no speedo readings :giggle:

You may do quite well Dave if you find a down-hill section with your 4 passengers in the car

Paul... have you checked your pressures? should be 2.5 bar all round ;) too high will give that light floaty feeling... may be cheap tyres though...

seeing as Can wants to drive the ring and Sam is hankering after some speed, I may get a new set of tyres , just for the trip.... the most important thing i think if speed is being considered!

My new GPS records max speed achieved ;)

Don't forget that vmax is fine on the 'bahns, but anything over 120 and an accident = your fault automatically for driving too fast. A few friends ran foul of this having incidents at speed. Luckily none were with other traffic - one, a TVR, fishtailed after a Trabant pulled out - kid you not - spanked into armco, caught fire and melted to alloys and chassis ladder...

Now realised that post makes me sound like my Mum, admonsihing speed. I just thought I would highlight it, as many don't realise that rule is in place on the derestricted bits of the A-bahn.

I have to admit to exercising a fair chunk of caution - nothing ahead and nothing behind. You get a bit of a wobble flying past wagons at twice their speed - and nothing scares the balloo out of you than an S5 or 535d bearing down at c.155mph....

Bad or not I've never gone out to achieve top speeds in this car. Have done in other cars and up to this one I've maxed them all out. For some reason I can't be bothered. May have touched 110-120 at Combe (indicated)

Yeh that's why I don't like going fast when it's busy on the 2 lane stretches. Also why my partners Aunt was always very cautious on the Autobahn in her Porsche Carrera 4 S she was always worried about someone pulling out.

I use Sygic navigation on my phone and it has a travel log that records max speed etc.

I have no doubt that given a long enough run the vRS TSI will reach it's book top speed of 140.

Yeh. Guess it's not always about trying to max the car out but more driving to the conditions etc. If it happens that while driving to the conditions you keep your foot planted for a while then looking over the GPS logs later you find you have achieved a pretty impressive top speed then so be it!

When I drive fast on the Bahn I don't even bother looking at the speedo. The odd glance to check that there's no lights etc appeared but I just keep my eyes on the road. I will then satisfy my curiosity afterwards by checking the sat nav log.

Phil

Checked my tyre presures and they were low - 30PSI at the front. Pumped them up to 36PSI and reset the monitor.

I did get bored after a few miles of trying to hit Vmax and settled down to a nice 100mph gait. The way it was pulling, i've no doubt it can do it. Curiosity cured...

Can't find that damn video of the guy in a stock vRS doing 156 mph... (hope it was autobahn)

On a smooth road it handles high speed with no issues, but this car suffers with ALOT of bump steer and really moves with the undulations in the road if its anything but flat, i felt less comfy driving this fabia at 120mph on the autobahn than i did driving my octavia vRS completely off the clock with a GPS of 164mph on the same stretch of road.

I was just going to suggest that it may be because the Fabia vRS is lighter than other cars but I just looked it up. It's a little porker! 1246kg.

My car weighs 1238kg with it's heavy diesel motor.

Can the steering assistance be adjusted on the vRS? I know it can on the older platforms. That might take away some of the twitchyness.

When I first got the Seat the setting was on full steering assistance and it was way too light.

Phil

Was twitchy at 256 km/h with stock-suspension, but with the new suspension and the fatter/grippier tires it feels alot more stable at 230 km/h then before at 230 km/h!

This was also done on Autobahn x).

I used to take my fab 1.6tdi over 110 with no issues not twitchy at all could it be that the vrs is lighter so not so planted?

The vRS is heavier so no actually...

Think it got to do with where the weight is.

The VRS is pretty front-heavy due to the engine/gearbox combo!

I've had a couple of vmax runs and it's not been too bad..not squeaky bum time but slightly nervous.. felt nowhere near as "planted" as my last couple of cars (Astra vxr and GSi)
