Shell V Power

Featured Replies

That does not say that you got 95 ron, (Octane) Does it??

it says you may have got an alternative source of fuel, not Shell V Power..

It would be Fraud to charge a customer for 98 or 99 octane 'minimum' fuel and sell them Minimum 95 Octane.

*Maybe garages did do that, & if they did then surely that would be a case for the Trading Standards & HMRC*

Would be Alternative to 98 RON minimum not be another 98 Minimum Octane?

For the Shell Fuel saver 95 RON minimum, would it not be another alternative 95 ron Minimum,

My local Shell stations tanks run dry of Shell Fuel saver

& people paid more for the Shell V Power that was in their tanks.

The new supplies came in and went in the 95 RON tanks and the V Power was closed as i remember.

(I had gone someplace else for fuel anyway because the other station was not short of supplies and neither ewere the Dundee Stations.)

2 years ago when there was a panic the greedy sods, of the Privatatly owned Shell station in Forfar,

thats owned by the Car Dealership beside the station bumped the price by 10 pence a litre as the panic buying started.

The owners where reported & the price was reduced PDQ.

Then the supply run out.

They are an Emergency Supplier when the Government will need to introduce Emergency Measures anytime.

No the guy did get 95 , the whole thing started as the ECU he used in his car monitors knock levels, his car went from the usual peaks of 20 to 60-80, he checked everything else and when that drew a blank he then questioned the fuel hence the reply from Shell. If it had been 98 then the change would not have been so extreme

The fact is on mappable high powered cars there is a big difference in the power you can get from 98 octane and fuels like Momentum and V power perhaps as much as 5% on some cars , its not all about the octane though, owners of most Japanese performance cars are pretty much stuck with these fuels as the cars are designed to run on 100 octane as found in Japan

Just to wind this thread back to the first page and the comments about when additives are actually added to the fuel, have a read of the linked article.

Just read this shocking

If you think that supermarket petrol is the same as from your branded fuel supplier, remember the damage to people’s cars caused by using Tesco and Morrisons petrol last year. The reason for this was that it was made using reclaimed/scrap toluene solvent which had been used to wash PCBs in electronics factories. No reputable oil companies were involved in that scandal as I’m sure none of them would use a cut price additive such as this.

That's why we need to steer clear of the supermarket

the local shell stsation on the way to work has stickers on the pumps saying " shell fuel saver temporary not available" ?

so are they supplying shell fuel or an equiv?

any ideas

I've tried two tanks of VPower now, one was at Castle Combe and then another tank afterwards. As far as I can tell it was no better on fuel than Momentum only a lot more expensive, being roughly £4 a tank more. Stuck a tank of Momentum in the weekend and was getting 45mpg driving tidy. Know loads who use Momentum with no problems and if it's good enough for race cars it's good enough for me

I've worked out it's roughly 1p per mile cheaper for me to use VPower, so worth it even setting aside the cleaning properties and the manufacturers higher RON recommendations.

I must admit I felt no difference in performance or smoothness during the tank of standard Fuelsaver 95 I put in as an experiment, but mpg was down.

As reluctant as I am to fill tescos coffers, I may try some Momentum sometime. What sort of litre price is that? VPower is nearly 8p/litre more at the moment but gives me 4-5mpg improvements.

Edited by TeebsVRS

Tesco Momentum used to be up to 10 pence a litre cheaper than V Power in some places.

now sometimes only 5-7 pence i would use it even if it cost more than V Power.

Sainsbury Super Unleaded 97 RON is often the same price as others Unleaded 95 RON.

Well I've filled up with Morrison fuel save diesel as it was only £1.40 per litre rater than £1.56 per litre for vpower saving nearly £10 on a fill up :) hopefully I won't see any issues , it was however up to 7% bio

Seb

Any diesel meeting EN-590 can contain up to 7% bio material (typically Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME)). Whilst all gasoline meeting EN-228 can contain up to 10% bio Ethanol.

In fact, it is a requirement under the Governments Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) introduced in 2008. The RTFO requires any producer supplying more than 450000 litres of automotive fuel per year must ensure that they supply fuel with an aggregate of at least 4.5% bio material; from April this year the obligation will rise to 5.0%.

So your example of 7% FAME at Morrison would mean that if they supplied equal volumes diesel and gasoline, then the gasoline must contain at least 3.0% of Ethanol.

Hi jerry thanx for the info but I'm still in the dark lol, on my golf it says no bio ? So how will this effect ?

Talk about price variation local tesco momentum was £1.42/l yesterday just filled up with v power at a station in Oswestry for £1.39/l

IIRC the v power nearest my home town is the same price as tesco.

Well if your golf says no bio then you are screwed as bio has been a legal requirement since 15th April 2008. If your handbook says EN-590 then no problem (as this allows bio in the form of FAME provided it meets ISO 14214). What I suspect they mean is no 100% bio (especially used chip fat oil) :)

And before this turns into a debate over petrol can I please refer everyone here; http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/251217-fifth-gear-posh-petrols-vs-supermarket/page__hl__%20fifth%20%20gear
