Best way to fully test the coil packs?!

Featured Replies

Some of you may have seen my thread regarding juddery idle on my AWY 1.2 6v fabia. A friend with a Polo (same engine) mentioned he had the same problem but it went away when one of his coil packs failed and was replaced with a new one. Presently I have no error codes and no big issues with them but if just replacing one of them could cure my judder I'm up for it.

Questions is how do I thoroughly test the coil packs function to see if one or more of them isn't at it's best?

Thanks or any suggestions!

I think these are the same as on the 12-valve, if so there's a resistance check you can do if you have a multimeter.

The info I've found suggests that you should measure 370-410 Ohms (@~20°C) between pins 2 and 3 (middle two of the four pins).

IME this is wrong, the measurement should be between 1 and 4 (outer two pins).

I guess this isn't a full test of function, but if any coil fails this check it may be worth trying a replacement.

Well, as your mate has the same engine, maybe just swop all the coils and see how they perform in his car. Then get your plugs out and either replace them all if they have been in for 3 or 4 years or they look a bit nasty, then fit his coils in your car. Once the coils develop a major functional problem, fault codes will get logged.

It makes no sense to produce a reliable test jig for these coils, well as far as a DIYer is concerned.
