Car Shakes at Idle

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Hoping you can help as I have a problem with my car and it is driving me mad.. I have owned the car for about a month now and bought it from DM Keith Huddersfeild.

When I took the car for a test drive I noticed that every now and then when the car was idling it was shaking (The idle needle staying still) I mentioned this to the sales rep who said he would get this looked at.

The day came to pick up the car after purchase and I was very pleased - Cambelt changed - Oil etc. I asked about the shaking and got told the Engineer couldnt replicate the shaking and if i notice it happens again to come back.

I came back about a week later and they sent a Engineer out with me to witness the shaking and it wouldnt do it! (although it was doing it all the way to the garage!) Typical. I left the car with the engineer for the day and he took it out twice and couldnt get it to shake so I picked it up again and was advised if i notice a pattern or I am passing and it is doing it to bring it in.

I have recently called Skoda again and they are going to have another look at my car on the 10th Sept but i fear it wont do it again....

Car Details:

Skoda Fabia VRS 06 plate

35k on Clock

I have recently noticed if i drive my car steady (Really steady, hardly take it to 2000RPM) and stop the engine shakes. If i thrash it about and stop the engine doesnt shake...

I have also noticed when the engine is cold (First start in morning) If i turn the key and let it idle for a few minutes a knocking sound starts to appear which can be stopped by pressing the clutch follows by the shaking. (Pressing the clutch doesnt always stop the shaking.

Using More power seems to stop the shaking - If i turn on all electrics when its doing it - it stops

Im not sure if this will help either but between 15k - 20k RPM sometimes my car feels like it is mis-firing (Kinda throws me forward, as if i have hit the break very quickly and come off)... Anyone get that? I have heard this is a "Dead spot"?

They have hooked the car to the fault finder and not found anything.

Any help or suggestions would be great guys / gals.

thanks.

Sounds like a dual mass flywheel to me.

stopped in nuetral does shaking stop if you put the clutch down? then start shaking when you bring the clutch up again?

if so DMF goosed or on way

Anyway you could 'film' it doing this. How I've got round a dealer saying NFF in the past.

Hope you get a fix,

TP

Engine mount?

If it's connected with pressing the clutch, it'll probably be the Dual Mass Flywheel. 35k miles sounds very low for it to start to fail though.

The dead spot in the revs is a well known niggle - search on here for EGR stutter gasket fix. Be warned though, having it modified with a different gasket will probably bring up an engine management light connected to the EGR exhaust gas levels, mine did after a few thousand miles but I just ignore it.

Thanks for the quick replys guys.

Bluecar1 - When in Neutral if i clutch in the shakes become less violent sometimes & other it doesnt make a difference. As for the Noise on cold (before it shakes) if i clutch in the noise stops.

The Plumber - I have thought about recording it but not sure how that is possible if it is shaking? Noise is understandable. (shaking could be not holding the cam properly)

TeebsVRS - Thats another one I have thought about but if it was an engine mount then wouldnt it shake all the time?

Drove it tonight and I was driving steady, stopped at lights ,shaking, I then drove it harder to the next set of lights and stopped - The shaking wasnt there but it was slowly coming back in again & becoming intermittent rather than constant. (Clutch in made it less violent)

Roll on the 10th - I would definatly say it has become more common than it were last time I were at the dealers.

Your "dead spot" between 1.5k and 2k rpm will be the BLT hesitation. Mine does it too, completely normall with late VRS (05 to 07) as they put a slightly diff engine in. The PD130 BLT compared with the earlier ASZ PD130.

The hesitation is caused by some gasket in the EGR valve. The skoda dealer should be able to fit a larger gasket or something to rectify it. Google BLT hesitation and you should find all the details.

Thanks Ally.

Is that something Skoda will do for free?

No problem!

Not too sure, I don't mind it too much, I run my car on BP ultimate diesel now and for some reason Its not that prominent anymore.

It is a known problem by skoda, so you may be able to get it sorted for free, if not the part literally costs pence to buy so is not an expensive fix. But like I said, I don't really notice it anymore so I haven't done anything about it.

To check dmf put the car in 4th geAr, engine off, and push forward and backward. If it goes any further than just resting against the gear ie a couple inches, likely there is a lot of play. You can also remove the inspection bung on top the gearbox and look while someone else pushes the car

Almost sounds like the car might have a Superpro dogbone mount fitted.. Mine sometimes shakes like mad at idle, but a tiny blip of throttle stops it. It doesn't bother me, although it does make the keys jangle. Easy to check, and simple to fix if it is this.

Thanks Lofty79 - I will do that tonight!

Benjiman - Sorry - What is a Superpro dogbone Mount? How can I check and what is the fix?

thanks.

Thats a rear engine mount that has a solid bush in it rather than a soft rubber one.

Have a look at the rear bottom engine mount and if it is soft rubber that's moulded with holes through it then it's an original and not aftermarket one.

Btw.

Our cars kind of does this sometimes but we have recently had a new gearbox, clucth and DMF fitted and it did it before that too.

Just sometimes I feel like the engine is juddering a bit but the rev counter is rock solid.

Very intermittent and everything else running ok so haven't looked into it yet.

Phil

Dog bone mount is a mount that fixes the engine to the chassis

The standard ones are quite soft to stop the engine vibrations benig transmitted through the chassis and shaking the car.

However the extra movement can cause a knocking and handling issues (i think)

It can be "updgraded" to a Superpro one which is harder so would transmit more vibration into the car

see here on how to find it

If it is your DMF the previous owners has "special" driving techniques to goose a clutch in 35k

+1 for DMF

S0nix, look out for me around Brighouse. Silver 06 vRS.

If it is the DMF you can cry on my shoulder - check out my thread on my recent gearbox failure.

Got Cleckheaton Gearboxes to do mine.

Thanks Guys.

I will pass this information onto Skoda. - Going to check the 4th Gear trick tonight to see what outcome I get.

If anyone is in the West Yorkshire area (Near Huds) and knows anything about cars give me a shout if you fancy taking a look as you might find something Skoda cant - & I will drop you a few quid :)

The plot thickens...

If I switch the blowers on the shaking becomes allot lighter but still exists.

Hi All,

Seen as I went to the dealer today rather than the 10th I thought i would give you all an update.

Went out with an engineer and the car wouldn't shake again but luckily I have found ways of starting the shaking (Whilst Stationary, put the car in fourth lift clutch slightly and then dip the clutch again - Take it out of gear and it shakes!!

The Engineer said it feels like the DMF or flywheel and I have the car booked in for the 17th this month. Spoke to the service manager when i returned from the demo with the engineer and I said I hope this is going to be done free seen as it was shaking when I purchased it and was told it would be fixed, she replied saying it will most probably be free but lets see what it is first - If it is the clutch you will need to pay for it however we will pay labour.

Well I will be in Slough on the 17th (the day they are fixing the car) so I have been told they will pick up fix it and drop it off at my house ;-)

Hopefully they do that and if any charges are outstanding at least I have my car whilst i battle them.

If it was the DMF then surely it'd happen all the time? mine does it, a 55 plate on 88k on a shark remap, I have a suspicion that its a timing issue, I've never noticed any flat spots in the rev range yet but mine is very intermittent and sometimes becomes more violent and less violent just sitting at a set of lights, although violent isn't the word because it's quite subtle.

Yes that is exactly like mine.. Sometimes the shaking is violent - Sometimes hardly noticeable and sometimes non existent..

What I did point out to the engineer though was if in 3rd and I am doing very low RPM - If i change down to second sometimes that feeling you get when you lift the clutch, I get that twice as if it went into second I dipped the clutch and then took my foot back off it.

We will see if it stops when they have done the work.

Do you find sometimes when at 1500 - 2000 RPM your car feels like it is mis firing? - Get it mostly when cold...

Armagh... Feel like I am being messed about :-(

Took my car in for the DMF - They have it 3 days - Called them up and they are doing some "safety checks" and wont be able to replace the DMF using extended warranty until and engineer comes and assesses this??!

Looks like my car will be going back in a week on Tuesday for the work to be done..

Does anyone know what damage a faulty DMF can do to a car? - I don't want to be driving around with a faulty DMF if it is causing damage elsewhere.

Sales of goods act.

You bought it, with a warranty. You identified an issue with a shake prior to purchase. Dealer said they'd fix it. If they now don't, you have fantastic grounds to argue a full refund.

Don't pay them a penny - if it is a Skoda dealer, take it up directly with Skoda UK.

Give them hell boy!
