Parcel shelf support thingy (whatever it's called!) broken. HELP !

Featured Replies

Helped my sister-in-law last weekend clear garden rubbish and shed, Hetti taking 3 loads to the tip. Came to put the parcel shelf back in and found the off-side support knob thingy missing. Eventually found it in the foot well, neatly sheared off. :swear: The rear panel has a small hole where it used to be. "Oh well, Chapman's will be able to supple a new one for a couple of quid" thought I.

At least the nice man had the sense to ask me to sit down before he told me the bad news! Support knob apparently an integral part of rear inner panel, cost (I think he said something like) £80 PLUS 2 hours labour - total somewhere near £200 !!!!!!!!!

FOR A LITTLE BIT OF PLASTIC 1/2 AN INCH LONG AND 1/4 INCH ACROSS !!!!! :'(

Anyone got any suggestions???

The pivot the parcel shelf clips onto and it supports the end near the seats from the side panel?

Would contact SUK customer services and see if this is not covered by warranty, as it should be a bit more robust than that.

I remember somebody else having the same problem.

I think they ended up fixing it themselves using a dowelling or something.

It was quite a while ago, so it will be deep down in the forum threads somewhere.

You could try making or obtaining some sort of bracket with a central post and holes for mounting either side.

Drill out the broken off post and glue to the central post of the bracket and when dry mount using self tapping scews.

I seem to remember having bought some inexpensive window locks in the past which have a central post with a screw thead, i was thinking of something like that idea?

Alternatively mount some sort of peg on the underside of the parcel shelf to fit in the hole left by the broken off post, if you get my drift?

Much sympathy with the OP. Especially as you were doing someone a favour. Would be nice if SUK did accept it as a warranty issue....but they will obviously have exclusions in writing to say it's not covered and it would require a goodwill gesture, I think. TBH it doess look like quite a long job to replace the whole item and the costing doesn't seem dreadfully outrageous given what we know parts and labour add up to.

Looking at the bit in question it looks difficult to attach anything as a DIY fix because the parcel shelf brackets sit so tight up against the side panel - there's no space for a rivet or screwhead. A dowel has nowhere to be able to be fixed. If the panel could be removed then I could imagine a DIY fix could be made up and fixed to the inside of the panel with a projecting stub to replace the original....but do you want to attempt removing the panel...and then risk not being able to achieve a repair? However, at least if you had removed the panel it might cut down some of the labour cost if you then took it to the dealer to fit a replacement?

Oh if it's not covered by warranty and you want to save a few bob why not fit it yourself; can supply some drawings/instructions and I would be happy to come over to help if you so wished.

TP

Thanks for all the helpful comments, especially TP's offer of practical help. I don't think it's even worth asking SUK but I've posed the question to my dealer.

BillN 33 (the originator of the earlier thread), what was your solution?

The best idea I've come up with is a combination of the above ideas. The broken off pivot is hollow, with a hole approx 9mm wide and approx 12mm deep. There is a similar sized hole in the side panel and there's a lot of clearance behind the side panel. So a carefully fashioned dowel, plain at one end and with a screw thread that will screw into the panel hole, liberally smothered in appropriate glue, may work. My son has a workshop and (for a pint) will fashion one. Question is whether that arrangement would hold the weight.

If it doesn't hold plan B would be to take the panel off, glue a block of something behind the hole, and then screw the pivot/dowel into that.

The drawings/instructions for removal of panel would be helpful, please, TP.

I'll keep you all posted on progress.

p.s. She's still a wonderful car!!

Will sort out drawings when I get home later.

TJK, sorry for your woes chap.

If I remember correctly from the other thread, I suggested using a self tapping screw and large washer behind the panel, but from what you say that won't work.

Engineering head on and the dowel idea sounds like the best option. Combine it with a large diameter flat washer behind the panel and a screw through a suitably sized hole into the dowel.

Glue will probably hold the dowel into the broken lug but I reckon the screw in the dowel will act like a rawlplug too.

Thanks for those TP. It all looks highly complicated to a non-mechanic like me!

I'll try the dowel/screw/glue option first when my son gets back from Croatia (he's a part-time coach driver, taken a group to a large pop festival there). If that fails,I'll get in touch with you for more help/advice.

When my Fabia 2 was still under warranty a couple of years ago, one of the parcel shelf pivots sheared half off and thay replaced it because 'it happens regularly' on Fabia 2. They may have changed design for Yeti (oh how I want a Yeti...) but if it is similar problem it OUGHT to be warranty.

News update! Replacement pivot fashioned by my son out of threaded bar. The business end smoothed off on lathe to correct diameter and hole in panel slightly enlarged to take the screw thread. Fits snugly so no need for glue. Business end covered in black electricians tape and, hey presto, no-one would know without looking really closely.

£200 saved!! :hi:

Excellent :)

Glad to hear you found a workable repair :)
