Amundsen Sat Nav Total Failure

Featured Replies

Hi all. This is my first post here so sorry I'm hitting you with a question...

I've just done a 1000 mile round trip to Paris in my 2014 Elegance estate and in terms of comfort and driveability the car has been great. My problems started as I headed to Dover and the sat nav started to put me about a mile to the west of wherever I was.

I assumed this might have been related to the clocks changing so I reset the clock and it seemed to fix it.

Once in France the problem began again after running smoothly for a 100 miles or so. I was in a complex junction coming off the A1 in Paris and it suddenly placed the car a few miles away in a field. I had paper maps with me and we used them once we had found somewhere to stop safely but trying to extract yourself from some Parisian housing estate with a road map rather than an a-z isn't easy.

After some digging in the manual I got the satellite information up on screen. Basically the car would fire up and recognise 10ish of the available 15 satellites which is fine for a GPS unit. Within 10 minutes it would then drop all the satellites and run on dead reckoning until we went under a toll both. Then it would fail completely, bung me in some field near the last recognised point and not reset.

The sat nav worked intermittently for the rest of the trip but was so unreliable we had to use paper maps which is never healthy for a marriage! I know that we all used maps before sat nav but I wouldn't choose to navigate across France with a paper map when there should be a better alternative...

I wondered if anyone has any experience of this before I go to the dealer and try to prove to them I have an intermittent fault which is always fun!

Thats not good. I'd go to the stealer with screenshots of the satellite pick up failure if you can. Good luck.

That sounds very much like a GPS antennae failure to me.

However (and this may appear totally off the wall) you haven't updated your maps recently have you?

Hi, no I haven't updated anything. I did wonder if it might require an update.

I used it again today and it followed the same pattern so it's definately not related to driving on the continent...

I've also noticed today that DAB has started dropping signal after 3 months of working faultlessly. Do they use the same antenna?

OK the shark fin on the roof handles the GPS.

On the hatch the FM and DAB antennas are the lines in the top of the heated rear screen.  For the estate they are in the rear side windows, one side FM and DAB.

So different aerials.

From your information it now sounds more like a head unit problem.

Useful info, thanks.

Had exactly the same problem with mine in the summer, total GPS failure and after the dealer looked at it, the antenna was replaced and all is now fine.

Took a few days for the part to arrive and a half day to fit it (roof lining taken off).

Thanks for the info, will head to the dealer next week to see what is what! First trip since I got the car so I'll be interested to see what sort of approach they have.
