A few factory sat nav questions.. *PICS ADDED*

Featured Replies

I recently fitted the vw sat nav system in my car and still getting used to it, So heres a few questions to anyone who's used one before or still has one.

1) How the heck do you turn the traffic announcements off! i think thats the TP thing thats always displayed on the top right of the screen, i've looked around and cant see how to turn it off.

2) When using the sat nav system, it seems quite slow to load, is this normal?

3) When traveling from one place to another, my position on the map only moves every 20 - 25 seconds or so, how does this seem to everyone els's? its very annoying when trying to find a street since it will always update when your several streets past the one you want...

4) My position on the map is always about 75 degrees out! so when it does update with me going along a road, it thinks im always going sideways???

5) On my other skoda radio, the symphony one, it had an option to turn the "loud function" on which was very usful, you used to hold geo button i think for 5 seconds and it would bring up another menu with loads of other functions like the led flash, beeping, other volumes etc... i cant find out how to get the one for this radio up.

-----

I have a plug and play loom, but was given it by another member (Thanks!) so i dont know which type i have or if it works on my sat nav etc..

Im using a 2007 map disc & have bought a new gps aerial, it picks up 31 satellites and connects to around 6.

Thanks.

Got the code then?

Got the code then?

I did yes, Thanks to you i should also point out!

I text the guy at vw the chassis number and the numbers off the radio. He sent me the radio code and it worked straight away. Very pleased since it was the last try before it locked!

I've been using it as a normal radio / cd player for the past few days but the gps aerial came in the post this morning so getting used to using that, even if it is a bit slow and dated i'd rather have it all set up properly :)

I paid £30 for the unit + £10 delivery, £7 for gps aerial, code was free & paid £5 for a 2007 map disc and plug and play loom, So is worked out very good imo :)

1, go into the bit where you pick CD, AUX etc and pick FM in the top right hand corner. That's FM with no traffic announcements.

2, Mine is a bit sluggish, they are pretty old though to be fair.

3, mine done that before I fitted the plug & play kit, should be pretty accurate. Where is your gps aerial?

4, suspect it's linked to 3.

5, not a clue I'm afraid.

I've got the aerial sitting on the dash atm, its actually tucked into the tax disc holder on the windscreen, will be fitting it all properly tomorrow if it all works better then!

So does your position on the map move all the time then with the plug and play loom you have fitted?

Yeah, before I fitted the loom it would just move randomly every minute or so, pointing in random directions. Once I plugged the loom in it worked spot on, even through Birmingham City Centre with lots of tall buildings it was accurate to a few feet.

Ahh right... I'll take pictures of my loom today and post them up. You might notice a fault with it or somthing??

Do you have a link to the one you bought?

Thanks.

Well after all that, i've just went and bought the proper skoda one, with code!! So now have two fully working sat navs, but thought having the proper skoda one would look better with the green leds, skoda logo on the start up screen and having SkodaAuto on the top of it.

on the other hand, i may have just paid £200 for the same item with green lights and a skoda logo

get your Skoda one from? Been after one for ages. My local dealer keeps telling me they cant source them......

What's the plug and play loom?

The thing a lot of people overlook is the fact that the system is meant to run alongside the maxi-dot display.

Without this youre looking at (as you've described) a sluggish map which gives you no directions, just a route to follow that is slow to update.

The maxi-dot display holds all of the details on what exit to take, what turn to make, an how long you've got I take it.

I wouldn't fancy using my Skoda sat nav without the maxi-dot display, because it's cack without it!

Iv not got maxi dot yet still works great. The maps themselves arnt sluggish at all, pretty sure the directions were coming up on the screen from what I remember. :-/

I didn't actually get mine for the nav, more because it looked better than most of the cack aftermarket stuff, less nick-able too. Iv found on longer trips I have the nav on anyway as a guide to how the road looks.

Maxidot was a Skoda specific thing, I believe (and maybe later, top-specced Golfs, I forget). My mate's LCR certainly didn't have Maxidot and his SEAT Navigation unit (which is essentially the same thing with a SEAT logo and red lighting) worked perfectly, if slowly due to the age of the unit. I'm 99% sure it gave him directions on screen as well as voice instructions so there's no reason the OP's unit shouldn't do exactly the same when configured properly even if they don't have a Maxidot display.

Yeah it was on Skodas and VWs - VW called it Highline display IIRC.

Depends how much you want to pay really, the skoda ones are worth alot more than the vw ones, i paid £40 deliverd for my vw one and £170 for my skoda one. So its cost me quite alot but i much prefer the factory look to aftermarket... After all i want my car to have the oem+ look.

At least i can enjoy the skoda logo now with proper green lighting! the red from the vw one sort of grinds on me after a while.

Heres one for sale, not that hard to sourse really.

Ebay item number: 160873885746

I bet skoda would want double that for one.

Would that fit straight into the Fabia dash and what other work would need doing to wiring etc?

Yeah, perfect fit. I'll show you some pictures in a day or two when my other one gets here. If you had bought the car new and picked satnav as an optional extra, your car would have left the factory with that unit or so to speak...

As for wiring, you need a plug and play kit, costs about £30. Its just a plug with two connectors on it tbh, so your standard wires plug into the plug and play kit and then that into the back of the satnav. No altering to wires or anything, very easy.

Does anybody know if Skoda still makes these for the mk1 and if so part numbers?

Also will this activate the small clusters in the middle of the dash cluster?

If you mean will it activate maxidot...no, it's a totally different dashboard cluster.

Also is pretty much impossible to retrofit :(

Not what i wanted to hear

Thanks anyway

So it doesn't matter that my car hasn't got the multifunction steering wheel as mentioned in the listing and also where would I get the plug & play kit if I was to buy the unit? Also is this a sat nav and radio only device with no slot for music cd's?

Thanks.

No, it doesnt matter what steering wheel you have, its just another feature the unit can be used with.

Plenty of plug and play kits for these on ebay and a few guides of how to make your own, id just buy one though.

Sadly yes... Its only a sat nav and radio unit. When these were an option from new the car also got fitted with a 6cd multichanger under the passenger seat. My car came fitted with one as standard so i have use of the sat nav, radio and cd player.

For about £7 you can get another aux in cable to play videos and music via an ipod.

Just a few pictures.

The before picture is awful, but im sure you all know what the factory cd player looks like.

After with the vw one fitted, only have a picture of it at night... been removed and sitting in the shed now.

Notice the red leds & blue/white writing and backround, typical vw colours.

Then the factory Skoda one fitted.

Nice one mate looks much better, was it easy to fit and set up? Also have you got a multichanger under the seat because I was thinking about getting one of these off Ebay but then I realised you can't just slot a cd into the front of it lol

Heated seats aswell I see... :D

Who still uses CDs? :D I use a link cable thing and a usb stick.

The Skoda one looks a million times better, the red one isnt a VW one though its a seat one isnt? I thought the VW ones were blue? Either way, stick it on ebay and get some cash back!
