Stop and start - effect on battery life etc

Featured Replies

We are contemplating a greenline citigo, one thing that does concern me is the additional wear and tear on things like starter motor, battery etc if the car is continually stopping and starting its engine.

I appreciate the engines are very lightweight, but there has to be more of an effect when compared to a non greenline model.

Thoughts anyone please!

When I test drove mine I thought the same

Until I opened the bonnet and realised the battery was nearly as big as the engine

Tis a beast

Years ago when we maintained royal mail vans they had a different starter fitted for frequent use

Without looking on epc I suspect its the same for all stop start vehicles

No probs you can easily switch it off, I love it on mine

I have one! It's great, regularly get ovet 70 mpg indicated on the trip computer.

If you are worried about stop/start there is a big button on the dashboard which turns it off.

Stop/start cars have up rated batteries and starter motors etc.

And also have a control unit under the passenger seat that powers everything electrical whilst stopped so the battery is devoted to the starter motor.

Ah thanks, I wondered what that was! When I first saw it I thought the dealer had left something in the car and I tried to pick it up

Not sure about wear on the starter motor, but the manual lists a multitude of circumstances which must be met before the stop and go will kick in, one of which is that the battery must be well charged.

Had a new focus since July 2011 with stop start, no problems here. Now covered 30K so operated a few times lol !!

Stop start on the 500. It works mostly. It's no where near as nice or good in my opinion as VAG's system.

Done 22k in my Fabia Greenline, including lots of stop/starts -no problems as of yet.

I love it on mine, seems to work better than my dad's A1 diesel

the battery in my greenline fabia II is massive, same size as the battery in the wifes MK 1 vrs (096 i think)

just for a little 1.2 diesel, the battery in the daughters 1.6tdi monte is about 2/3's the size of mine ??

plenty of space capacity then for all the stop starts

Like some of the posters above I also ran a Fabia Greenline II and did 20k miles in a year.

The stop start worked everyday and never caused any issues at all.

It's good, once it works a few times and you get used to it.

As said, if you don't want to use it on a certain trip, just push the button to switch it off.
