Got my SE, weird raspy sorta sound?

Featured Replies

Hi got my citigo yesterday, this is hard to explain but I will try. When accelerating there is like a raspy sort of sound, I cant make out if this is the sound of the 3 potter or a fault.

If I open the window I can't hear it outside only inside when pressing accelerator.

Sort of sounds like an old car. The wife says its the sound of the engine but I am not convinced yet. Maybe it's cause it's new and hasnt been run in ?

Anyone else's sound like this?

The 3-cylinder is quite raspy as normal, I think it sounds great!

yeah, i would imagine its a bit of both tbh

There is a You-Tube video with a Citigo revving through the gears - compare that with yours:

I found my Citigo 75 Greentech was rougher for the first 100 miles or so, but now at just over 500miles it is much smoother and has that lovely psuedo Porsche 911 sound from the 3 cylinder engine! Can't wait to get to the 622 miles to start opening it up!

Yeah as ^^^^ 3cylinder are very noisy but its a nice noisy engine ;)

Mine makes all sorts of odd noises, but i check the oil every week, it hasn't used any so far, and the MPG is good - so i wonder worry about it unduly.

mmmmm, VW up forum has similar postings and they say it sounds like a 4 cylinder running on 3 kinda sound???

Nothing to worry about apparently. Who knows

The engine has been described as sounding like a baby Porsche when you give it a bootful.

I rather like it :)

It's a meaty engine sound! Totally standard! :)

mine sounds very rough indeed below 2000 revs, sometimes a little bit worrying too (but i have only done 210 miles).

On a side note, i have found sometimes when i take my foot off of the clutch, there is a *squelch* noise, has anyone else had this?

They are quite raspy -particularly the 75ps engine.

Have a go in a Fabia Greenline II - now that's a noisy engine, every so often I like to give it some beans to clear out the soot -characterful I would describe it as

Well, went to get my PID manual and the dealer listened to the car himself and said it doesnt sound right. We got another citigo and that sounded okay.

They took my car in straight away and now I got a courtesy car for a week or so. :rain:

I stood outside the car whilst he was pressing the accelerator and when the car was decelerating could hear a popping sound.

Thought it wasn't right, but great service as was going through possible dates in 2-3 weeks time to to get the car in as I work shifts and the manager told the guy to get me a car straight away and get it in for looking at.

The sound of 60BHP reminds me of my old Saab 900 and that was bullit proof

Without actually hearing your problem, what you describe by way of a popping sound could be an air leak on the intake side of the engine affecting the fuel/air mixture. This could also account for the raspy engine sound too.

Got a phone call today to say it's been fixed, will see when I pick it up if the sounds have gone.

Cortina, is that a case of something not tightened up properly?

Will let you know when I get it back as am working nights this week.

Stu

Maybe - or possibly a faulty, or not properly seated gasket. As they have fixed it quickly it sounds like something quite simple.

It could also have been on the exhaust side - thinking about it, the engine would have been tested after assembly and the intake side should have been OK at that point. On the Citigo/Up! power unit the exhaust manifold is built into the cylinder head. The connection to the exhaust would be made on the car production line - that could have been where the problem was. It will be interesting to know what the dealer discovered.

Great to hear you will be having it back though and you will be able to hear that lovely psuedo Porsche 911 engine sound when it is properly run-in! I would recommend reading my posting on running-in for clarity.

Will also ask them what eactly the problem was.

Well got citigo back and they said they had their "top" Skoda man on it and he could'nt find anything wrong. Maybe it is just the sound it makes, it is like a sound where if it was heard outside the car it would be slightly embarrasing as it sounds like an old car with a new number plate??? Stuck my head outside whilst accelerating and cant hear it outside only inside with windows shut. (and accelerating).

Anyway the salesman heard it first and he said best bet was to book it in so I did and here we are. Nothing wrong apparently.

Maybe its just the sound it makes then, bit odd but maybe I will get used to it as only 100 odd miles on it so may subside.

Just thought I would let you know in case anyone else has doubts over it. :)
